  1. I love the scenery in that whole area. Threatened for years to buy some property in Wyoming. I bought a plane in Montana years ago and a guy who was over coyote control needed a ride to Rapid City, SD so I told him I would drop him off. He was well connected and asked have you ever scene Mt Rushmore from the air? Told him no. He gets on radio with air traffic. contollers and gets permission and we basically do a couple of close passes checking nostrils. Absolutely thrilling.

  2. When the boys were growing up camping made a lot of vacations possible. Most we paid for a camping spot was $33 a night. Siesta key. Key West, and Mammoth Cave just to name a few. No work to speak of. Bonnie and I shared the driving, I backed the trailer in the space [with Bonnie's help], and leveled the trailer, the boys did the hook ups, Bonnie and I switched off cooking and doing the dishes, We found one K.O.A. in Florida that we could scuba dive right off the side of the campgrounds. When the boys grew up it was as economical. 18' trailer, and full sized van. More family fun than we had ever had before.

  3. Well, I'm from Memphis..so anytime we can escape here is worth of being called a vacation, lol. Been so drained from doing the daily covid grind of working, watching kids while working, and being unable to do much. Wife and a couple friends of ours took Friday off and loaded up the Kayaks and drove out to an Air BNB around Kingsdon Springs. It was so refreshing! Thats a beautiful little area even though it takes 20 minutes to get on I-40 when as the crow flies its only a mile away haha. Drove by Royal Range...what a spectacle that place is! Friday night we ate at Tupelo Honey...fantastic meal. Saturday we floated the Harpeth River. Water was up, so there were a few rapids and the river was fast flowing and clear. Saturday night we ate at Husk. What a foodgasm that place is! I've eaten at the Husk in Charleston and was so happy it came to Nashville! Really refreshing 3 day vacation without kids...thank you parents for watching these wild creations! Now back to the grind tomorrow!

  4. The Tennessee state parks offer 10% discount on camping for Tennessee residents and 25% for seniors age 62 and over. I have been taking advantage of the new policy this year with my travel trailer. Tim's Ford and Natchez Trace state park are really nice campgrounds for RV camping, we did some great bicycling and kayaking right from the campsite. Most other state parks are good too. https://reserve.tnstateparks.com/

  5. We love the state parks and COE (Corp of Engineers) parks. Most have electric and water with a dump station. We are actually headed to Cumberland Mountain State Park in a couple of weeks for some downtime. I've RV'd all my life. Bought a diesel pusher first of the year and plan to spend 2 to 3 months in the Rockies next spring.

  6. Due to CV I bought a used RV because my family and friends were getting together camping. I made my first trip this week. I’m RVing, not camping and am not necessarily interested in being secluded. I need 30 AMP service with water available. Full service with water hookup would be great, but not required. I would like to have a get together here with friends and family, but I haven’t checked out any spots yet. I would appreciate any input from forum members. Thanks

  8. Both of my girls are grown and gone now. When we are together now they ALWAYS bring up a camping story. My oldest tells everyone I taught her how to cook. I let her light the coleman stove, open a can of Dinty Moore beef stew, pour it in the pot (most made it in) and stir it while it heated up. Always amazed me what kids would talk about while around the campfire making smores etc. Hmmm gotta go, something in my eye!

  9. I'd go with the .357. More versatile, lots of loads to choose from and better ballistics in case you need it against a large animal. The .45acp is an excellent self defense cartridge and would probably just fine for the stated purpose. I just prefer the .357 in this case.

  10. Well not cheap, but my LGS had limited amount of 9mm 115 gr. for $15.95. Better than I have seen elsewhere in awhile.

  15. I saw this yesterday myself. Woman behind the checkout counter was defending the price to a customer who commented that it seemed mighty high. As a defender of the free enterprise system and the open marketplace, I don't hate gougers for taking advantage of the law of supply and demand when it's in their favor. Neither do I have sympathy for them when the tide turns and customers remember their friends.... Cheers, Whisper

  17. World and US events over the past few months have manipulated the firearms industry like nothing I have seen before. If you were with us inside the gun community during the Obama years, you undoubtedly remember 2012-2013 and the crazy run on ammo, mags, and any rifle that wasn't a bolt-action brown wood hunter. 2020 has, no pun intended, blown all of that away. If you doubt the accuracy of that statement, ask yourself when the last time was that you saw a new Glock 19 going for $700+ and buyers barely hesitating to pay those prices. You are doing lucky if you find one in the $600 range at the gun shop, and they rarely last long at that price if you're lucky to see one. And remember just eight months ago big online retailers like Brownells were running daily deals offering percentage-based discount codes in order to entice buyers to open their wallets? Those days are long gone. The egregious environmental protection restrictions placed on ammunition manufacturers under Obama shoved a lot of ammo production overseas, only to then have the door slammed on importation by politically motivated tariffs. Domestic production slowed even further as inventory ramped up for the GWOT and to catch up on demand from the Obama era and then began to stagnate in warehouses due to public dissinterest. If there was ever an industry that could use some seriously talented demand planners, it's the ammunition industry for sure. Where you used to be able to buy all of the 5.56 ammo you wanted, by the case-load, you now see cases of ammo being parted out and sold in baggies at premium prices by retailers acting like street hustlers slinging meth. So, what's next? My prediction is that standard capacity magazines will soon become very scarce -- once again -- thanks to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals finally making the commonsense ruling that California's ban on magazines with capacities over 10-rounds is unconstitutional. Any Californian who didn't act during the previous window of opportunity surely will be doing so now. Supply will dry up quickly and it will take several months for it to catch up. The November election certainly won't help ease pressure on the sale of mags, ammo or guns either. If you're reading this and thinking "Geez, I need to hurry up and buy some mags", I wouldn't dilly dally around. Act while they are in stock with your preferred retailer. The price couldn't possibly go down, and I suspect that availability will become scarce at least until January 2021.

  18. RE: " Optics" ... Can't give a good answer here... My 450 is iron sighted...That bein said; I would pick the one i liked... I like the low power long eye relief scopes ya use on big pistols and dangerous game rifles... They will stand the recoil just fine. I would stick with Nikon, Burris, Bushnell. leroy

  20. https://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/remington-asset-bids-revealed-ruger-gets-marlin-vista-gets-remington-ammo-franklin-armory-gets-bushmaster/ There is a lot of interesting info in who bought what. A real estate group bought out the mainline Remington business. I don’t know what that means for it or the Ilion plant. JJE Capital Holdings, (PSA) got DPMS, H&R, Stormlake and AAC. PSA is now in the suppressor business. Ruger bought Marlin. Hopefully they can L return Marlin to quality again. Also, Ruger is now in the lever action game. Franklin Armory (binary trigger folks) bought their Bushmaster brand, so I expect that to see a revival. Barnes was bought by Sierra. That’s a good match.

  21. The regulations regarding hogs have changed recently. https://www.tn.gov/twra/wildlife/mammals/large/Wild-Hog.html You'll want to read up. The easiest way to make this happen is probably by using a hunting lodge such as Loshbough, Caryonah, or a similar outfitter. Regardless, a hunting license is required for any hunting in TN.

  22. I finally committed to dry fire. It's working for me, YMMV This is 7 yards, ability to go out to 12. Promised my wife I wouldn't be putting bullet holes in it. Range lights on and off, with natural light, I can mimic different conditions.

  27. You know... unless you have firsthand knowledge of what RR is paying for their ammo, any claim that they are gouging rather than passing along their own increases is completely an opinion. I warned previously that the cost of ammo to suppliers was going to be increasing as what remained from previous years production dried up.

  28. I took a trip down to Leakey, TX at the end of last week to do some hunting. I had bought a hunting trip for Sika deer and hog at a SCI auction. The owner of BCR, Peter Allegra, has owned the property for about 30 years and brought in over 40 different species of European, Asian and African animals. He has over 10,000 acres which is roughly 16 square miles. It is a big place and I had it all to myself. Sika deer bugle like elk. Normally they are in full rut by mid September but the hot dry summer delayed the start of the rut. They were just starting to rut on my last day. We heard several bugles but the Sika never showed themselves. I was supposed to leave Friday evening but Peter told to stay another night so we could hunt on Saturday. Heard some more bugles Saturday morning but no luck. I had told Peter that I wanted a good eating size boar. He mentioned that he felt that the red deer does were a lot better eating than the boar. He has an abundance of them and said I could cull one of those if I wanted. So that's what I decided to do. I took a nice red deer doe at 142 yards on top of a ridge. I am glad I made a good shot and she went straight down. If she had run 15-20 yards right or left if would have been a hard recovery. The ranch house is at about 600 ft. The top of this ridge where I got the deer was at over 2300 Ft. Peter works hard to put you on the game you want. He and his wife only bring in one group of hunters at a time. They try to keep it at 4 and under. Peter and i hunted from before dark till after dark two straight days and then next morning. His wife would make home cooked meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It was fun trip although I was a little tired on the 15 hour drive home. The last pic is a shed from a red stag. They are magnificent creatures.

  29. Yeah, I don't shoot there often. For clarification they only make you purchase ammo from them if you use one of their rental guns. Otherwise they just don't want you using reloads.

  30. Went into a LGS in Huntsville today. They had 9mm and 45ACP Blazer Brass for $25/box with a 4 box limit. They also had enough 223 to start a war - if you wanted to buy by the barrel.

  34. Thing is, unless they've changed their policy, RR doesn't allow you to shoot reloads on their range. Good thing I have empty factory boxes.

  35. I think he's afraid of rampant voter fraud stealing the election form him when he makes those kinds of statements. I like him, but I do wish he'd just shut up sometimes. I think he's turned out much better than I expected to be honest. He wasn't my first choice, but he has stood up to the liberals for the most part.

  42. I agree that a handgun is best because it can be carried at all times, but for most people needing a long arm for defensive purposes, I think a shotgun is best. While I understand the attractiveness of recommending a battle rifle like the AR-10, it requires a reasonable amount of training to use an AR-10 effectively at close quarters, and when you start talking about shooting people at ranges of many hundreds of yards, you're no longer talking about self defense.
