  1. I can’t say I’ve ever been a big listener. But as the parent of three children, I can’t think of anyone who’s actually done more for the children of this state. My oldest is 14, and I think she was among the first group to be a part of the statewide Imagination Library - where if you’re not familiar any child in Tennessee can receive one book a month in the mail addressed to them at no cost until their fifth birthday. We’re an affluent family that read to our children every night - but man did my kids look forward to getting those books in the mail. They’ve of course outgrown most of them - and though we’ve set some aside to keep and pass down - we’ve passed a ton more along to refugee groups and mission points we support. I’m certain there’s some kid in Haiti or Tanzania who knows the Little Engine that Could or Llama Llama Red Pajama because of Dolly. My wife teaches in a exceptional education in a school that is extremely diverse - both racially and economically. I can say that for some of the kids she works with - those are the only books they had ever owned. She’d get their vote.

  3. Started listening to him during the Bill Clinton Years when I had a welding gig that turned into a Box Truck Driver job once a week. Hours in the Truck listening to Rush "woke" me up politically. I had already been a Talk radio listener but formats were about health, sports, Roswell aliens etc. Rush was new! Now here we are in 2021 and Political talk all the time 99% conservative. Remember when the left tried a radio station and it failed? It takes critical thinkers to digest political talk radio. No flashy graphics or accompanying pics to skew your thoughts like the MSM. Just common sense. I honestly feel as bad as things seem now, without Rush this Country would be full blown progressive by now. He "woke" alot of folks to what was going on and by example started careers of all the Ben Shapiros, Glenn Becks, Crowders etc. and the slew of Right of Center podcasters and influencers, many of whom are so called minorities. The very people Rush and his type were always falsely accused of hating. This gives me hope. Thank you Rush and may you Rest in Peace!

  4. Strike the 1903, as Colt is currently producing those again. I guess the 1908 would be a safe bet. 380 or Vest Pocket 25. Heck, a man could carry one of each!

  5. I wouldn’t consider myself a pro welder by any means, as there is so much to welding, fabrication, and metal work that it’s undoubtedly a lifelong study to reach that level. But I am certified, own my own mobile welding rig, and make a fair amount of money welding as my side job. I’d be happy to answer questions on here, or at some point link up and put on a small class. I’ve taught quite a few military guys to weld, if they can figure it out anybody can .

  6. My original answer was and still is going to be the M1916 red nine broom handle. But the Webley-Fosbery autococker is too cool not to mention for a second place pick.

  7. Thanks! It's actually a Sears brand, budget model 70. The Supergrade swivels we're an expensive lesson. I didn't realize there were 2 sizes available: the original, pre-64 half inch & the later 'Uncle Mike's' size. Both mounts are about the same price at $60ish per pair, but the sling swivels?! Yeesh! $10 for good quality Uncle Mike's. $150+ per pair for originals! I ended up gambling $200 for 2 sets of swivels & selling the spares on ebay for $172, luckily!

  9. First, Thanks for all the interest & comments on this Colt project. I didn't think there were that many folks interested in these old guns here! So, I thought a better insight into what makes these gun run would also be of interest. Also, I dont know if any one else ever fixed the weak locking lug problem like what I did but its a worthy mod for the shooter rat rods that are just waiting to be we awakened! Incidently As you saw, I neded an ejector rod housing and every make Tom Dick n Harry made units are 4" long. This particular gun uses a 3 3/8ths long housing instead. The ONLY gun out there today that uses one in that size is the Ruger Bearcat. So, for 20 bucks I got one with a spring from Numrich and fit a Uberti rod to it that I had. Problem solved! In this shot you can see the goofy ass hand spring that wants to twist the hand in its now loose pivot pin hole. Good Grief ! .... Right at the tip of my thumb, you can see a little black hole I drilled in the frame and milled a relief straight away from it. Thats for a .042" spring wire taken from a 12g mag tube spring. Hey Greg, the bends on the dual finger spring is about the best configuration I could get out of them. Without the added wire spring, its flat out inadaquite for a working lug with the ware level in these parts. A huge difference between this and a 1873 is that DBL action strut arm you see there rides inside the hammer. The hammer seer edges have the centers gone due to the large milled out track for that strut to fit in threw the hammer center. You can really see how much they hollowed the hammer 's center out by looking up at the last picture and see the hammer seer edges in the frame right under where it says "hammer seer" This design has far less hammer to seer contact area compaired to the 73 yet still has the same hammer tension to deal with at the contact areas. = faster ware down and a very abbreviated half cock notch. The upper most notch on the hammer is suppose to be a "firing pin off the primer setting" but mine is pretty much wiped out but the half cock setting was able to be deepened enough as to get it to hold and be loading functional. This as far as the ejector rod will push out 38 spl cases. I suppose trimming then down to 38LC length is the right thing to do if you really want a play toy that walks n talks the way it should. Thanks again for all the inspiring comments. Despite the not so "73" duty design work, its still a cool piece to play with.

  15. The thing that’s interesting to me about Dolly is how she really does seem to thread the needle and avoid controversy. With someone of her status, I expect that’s due to three things: 1. A very specific focus on staying out of those topics and situations. This is a craft, and she’s good at it. 2. To that end, she’s almost certainly cultivated a team of people around her who she’ll listen to and can tell her, “You know what? Take a pass on that one.” I can think of a lot of celebrities who could take lessons on this one. 3. She’s probably honestly just good people. This just can’t really be faked - at least not for long. I expect she’d fit in just fine at any of our dinner tables. There’s an old story about her breakup with Porter Wagoner and the court full fights that went on for years after that where he basically tried to destroy any career she might have thereafter. But fast forward a bunch of years to when he was bankrupt in the late 80’s. If my memory serves me correctly, she basically bought his old studio out of foreclosure and gifted it to him. That lady has never forgotten where she came from. I hope folks will say the same about me if I make it to her age.

  16. Dolly is a wonderful human being. When Gatlinburg was burning she took her own money to help displaced residents. It’s not the only thing she’s done either. She’s as down to earth as one can get. She deserves some recognition for her accomplishments but if she doesn’t want a statue then that’s up to her.

  17. Thanks everyone for the feedback. I have watched quite a bit of youtube and I can certainly go out and play with about anything I want in the shop, mess things up and try again and that is always a good way for me to learn, but I also realize I can start a lot of bad habits and not even know it. Danger Rane, I may try to take you up on your offer at some point. We could turn it into a Weld and Shoot day. I will take a look at some of those videos. I have watched quite a few, but maybe I just need to jump in and give it a go.

  18. I found the ad. Click Here Definately foreign made. Can't really see the headstamp very well, but I think its DAG. which would be Dynamit Nobel Germany. Definitely has the three point crimp. Oddly enough, it appears to be a hybrid case with a steel head and a polymer body. He's only asking $100, but I still wouldn't buy this stuff.

  19. I wondered if there was a Makerspace in Nashville that might have some people willing to share their knowledge. While searching, I ran across this: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/beginners-welding-tickets-130973397959?aff=ebdsoporgprofile It's a beginners class tomorrow (02/20/2021 1:30 PM - 4:30 PM CST). Cost is $70. While it may well be too basic of class for you, it might get you in contact with welders at the Make Nashville community. FYI: I've never been to a Makerspace and have only read about them.

  22. Good luck, I have been in the same boat for some time. I too make what I call Gorilla Welds, ugly but strong. I looked at a few local places and even Nashville but like you, only found places that would certify you to work in the industry. I think your (and my) best bet is to find someone local that is a pro welder to teach you on your equipment.

  24. No hate for Dolly Parton, actually love her story, but I don't get the infatuation with her at the level its at. She's got to be the most fake genuine person I've ever seen. Shoot, Fred Smith has done more for TN than Dolly Parton could ever dream and there's no FedEx liscense plates. I don't get those either. A statue? Your telling me a statue of Dolly Parton standing next to Davey Crockett is a legitimatly good look for the history of TN. I think the standards of statues is confusing. I actually agree with Dolly on this one.

  27. Yeah, she’s definitely putting herself out there and making a statement...we need more like her. Something else in the article that I found interesting was the statement “As members mulled a firearms ban during committee hearings...”, why would members of the House Natural Resources committee being mulling a gun ban? Although I guess every committee in Washington with Democrats on it is probably mulling gun bans.

  28. My heat pump does well for the majority of the days but have an LP furnace and 500 gal underground tank for back up when it gets to cold or if the heat pump fails. The tank also powers the demand hot water heater and a fireplace. We normally use around 100 gal of LP a year and do a Summer refill, but nice to have the reserve if needed. The LP fireplace has saved us in a couple of power outages since it doesn't need AC, we have a remote control that you can set the temperature you want and lay it so it points at the fireplace and it turns the fireplace on and off as needed and heats most of the house if it isn't too cold. I can run the furnace off my portable generator for longer outages or colder temperatures.

  29. Just for fun, I’m going with a Gary Powers special - High Standard HD-M/S. Fun fact - while these were delivered in 1944 - there are still a bunch of them in use. The combination of a liquid charge with a baffle wipe made coupled with a slide lock made it unbelievably quiet.

  31. I’ve never been to Dollywood, but I’ve noted over the last few years how many moms I’ve heard say, “We went to Dollywood. That place was clean.” As someone who grew up at Six Flags where you had to be careful about touching anything for fear of either getting a handful or chewed gum or an STD, that comment has stuck with me. Theme parks aren’t really my thing - but I expect it’s kind of like the old Van Halen green M&Ms clause. If they care enough to get it clean enough that moms of young kids notice - they probably also care enough about things like maintenance and safety that you can feel good about getting on that ride.

  32. I bought one early last year and have used it for other things but I have not yet used it for a power outage. I did get it out and ready when the icing started. The lights started blinking off and on so I started it up but I never lost power. I let it run until we went to bed, then shut it off. I run it once a month with a partial load on it for 20 or 30 minutes. It's very reassuring to have.

  34. I don’t know what goes on in the rest of the state, but I know here in Nashville it’s managed by the local chapter of the United Way. It certainly wouldn’t surprise me to find that the legislature had provided funding or anything like that - I’ve yet to find a politician that won’t try to co-opt a good program to their benefit. But,I know we’ve donated in the past, and the tax statement we’ve gotten at year end has come from the Imagination Library/United Way.

  36. I've removed live primers from brass that had NO crimps on the pocket (22-250), just go slow and steady, wear PPE. I saved those primers as I didn't know whether they were 200 or 250, and the seller could not remember either. I needed to re-size the brass anyways as it had been neck sized for sellers rifle, not mine so. I did not set any off but was glad when I had 'em all done. I've used these primers for fouler rounds, everyone has gone bang , seat with normal pressure, etc. Just go slow and carefully.

  41. We're right on the edge of where heat pumps work acceptably in the winter. A well insulated house with good windows and a relatively new heat pump will be fine during a normal winter. When the polar vortex hits, heat pumps struggle so gas is the way to go. All else being equal, I'd choose gas heat. But newer dual fuel units are worth a thorough look.

  42. Never seen this before, but a look around on the web says that reloaders suggest a slow steady push with a universal decapping die. Not sure I am that brave. My biggest deal would be that most blanks are crimped at the end, so not just as easy as pulling the bullet on normal ammo. Also have to worry if the primer was crimped. If so, the primer cup might be too distorted to use again. I would also suspect that with all the pull down bullets, reclaimed powder, and brass you can buy from disassembly companies, not seeing them selling reclaimed primers might tell the entire story. Doable, but not safe or efficient. So I think I would just be patient or look for the best price I could find if I needed primers.

  44. I don't think comparisons of this site and others (left or right) are apt. A higher standard of decorum is a good thing about this site. We should hold ourselves to it here without regard to the rest of the internet. The vitriol of left or right isn't my vibe, so I think that's why I keep coming here. Even if I don't feel compelled to celebrate his career, I've enough compassion to have a thought for Rush's struggle with cancer, along with his family and their loss. Cancer is a horrible thing for someone to endure in their final days, also hard on the family and friends. Good thoughts are free, so I'll run some up.

  47. I do want to note that this will be the third "road rage" post within a week or two on TGO. I really do believe that in the mix of COVID, election/politics, social media, all very heavily intertwined with paranoia, fear, and conspiracy theories, a lot of people are on edge more than they've likely ever been and as such reports of road rage and similiar events does not surprise me in the least. I initially considered posting about it but decided against it. However, after seeing other somewhat similar posts I decided it was important for me to do this. I was out running errands about a week ago. It was shortly after 5:30 PM and I decided to grab a few beers before heading home. I stopped at the convenience station, grabbed the goods, and waited in what seemed to be a decently long line for probably 5-10 minutes. I remember not speaking to anyone in the line, but instead watching outside two men assisting a young lady with her old, old F O R D pickup. I was pleased to see they helped her get it started rather quickly, and all seemed right in the world. After checkout, I started to leave. Generally speaking, from this gas station, I can be home within 3-4 minutes. There is exactly one red light and then three additional intersections before I am in front of my driveway. Fast forward about 2 minutes. I'm sitting at the first intersection after the red light. There is a single vehicle in front of me at the stop sign. I quickly notice this driver turned 180 degrees around, facing me and generally looking rather wide eyed at me. At the time, I didn't think much about it other than it seemed odd considering this guy should have simply turned left or right instead. I concluded he either thought he knew me or someone else, or had a case of the heebee jeebies. So, he turned left and I turned left. He sped up rather a bit and I generally thought all was well. As we neared the next turn (for me) off the main road, I was hoping I'd see him continue straight. Well, last moment he threw his turn signal on and turned the same direction. Since I was going home and didn't want to go anywhere else, I turned too. This is a country road with residential houses alongside. He pulled approximately a few hundred yards up that road and stopped the vehicle. I quickly realized that something was about to get interesting as he exited the vehicle towards me. I'm a rather caring guy. There are, potentially, legitimate reasons for approaching another driver. Maybe he needed help, or saw something on my vehicle that needed addressing. That is all certainly possible. I made sure to leave a lot of room between my vehicle and his. I also left the vehicle in D with my foot on the brake. I also I slightly cracked my window as he was waving his arms and yelling at me. I missed what he said initially, so I asked if he could repeat what he said. It's been a week, but I'll paraphrase to the best of my ability. Hey, I want to know what your problem is. What do you mean? You've been following me ever since I left the store up there. What's your problem with me? Sir, I'm just trying to get home. Where do you live? I don't need to tell you that. I knew you didn't live on this road. You need to get out from behind me. You need to go on right now. So, at this point, I carefully but quickly just passed him and kept going. I was very afraid that he would attempt to follow me and had plans on diversion, but he very speedily turned his truck around and went the other direction. In hindsight, he may have very well been in front of me a place or two in the convenience store. I'm sure in his mind, I made eye contact with him once in the store, followed him out of the store, and was going to follow him home for some sort of mischief. I'm mostly sure he was either certifiably paranoid or on drugs of some sort. But, I didn't care to get to know him, anger him, or stick around much longer than needed. The whole encounter was probably 10 seconds. My point? Deescalation is always the preferred method of handling conflict. Even though he flew off the handle immediately I treated him with respect and called him Sir. Had he given me the chance, I would have simply apologized for anything that I had done and assured him I stopped at the store for beer and was headed home to my family. I could have verbally disputed with him, I could have upped the game by cursing/name calling. I could have acted big and tough by acting in threatening manners. At the end of all of it, I just wanted to get home to my family without incident and drink my beer. Be careful out there folks.
