  1. About the time I get done with one I swear to myself that I'll never do another. Yet a short time later I come across a rifle or shotgun that begs for my love and I can't help myself. Just stripped this one down today. Had an ugly reddish varnish that didn't show the natural grain of the wood. The picture is just water on the wood after I washed the stripper off. That grain is amazing. Thinking it's just going to get a good sanding and about 30 coats of TruOil.

  5. Man, I’m so happy that the P35 is being kept alive. It was looking real sketch there for a while after Browning ceased production. Now we just need a US based manufacturer to start actually making them and not just folks like Wilson customizing them.

  6. I skipped the car show this year and headed home instead on Saturday, long walk and threatening rain. For those that don't know about Hershey it is the Fall Meet for the Antique Car Club of America. It is also their largest show. The flea market covers roughly 100 acres and has nearly 10,000 10X30' flea market spaces. I have 3 of them. They usually have around 1400 cars for sale in the car coral and 1200-1400 cars in the Saturday show. These are all 25 year old and older vehicles that are as they left the factory, no street rods. They do allow vintage race cars if they have a documented racing history. My spots are roughly a mile from the edge of the car show and I'm probably a 1/2 mile or so from the other end of the flea market. The car show itself is adjacent to far western flea market field. In my younger days I walked all of the flea market over 3 days, this year maybe a quarter, getting old and the legs are not what they use to be. I have an aerial photo I bought of the 2019 meet, I'll try to remember to scan it and post to give you an idea of the size. Was down a bit on attendance this year because the borders are closed and they usually have a large number visiting from other countries. Most years you an't walk for more than 30 minutes without hearing a foreign language or a strong accent, this year I heard two.

  13. There were a lot of 1917 Enfields sporterized back in the day when they were surplused for $17 or so. Yours actually looks nicer than many I've seen. The case hardening on the receiver was incredibly hard so it was common to spot anneal them so the non carbide bits of the day could penetrate the metal. I suspect the roughness around the forward scope base hole is a result of that. The Remington actions were the most sought after because they don't have the "bath tub" milled out on the receiver bridge between the ears. The barrels were torqued down with tremendous force and if you ever attempt to unscrew the barrel without making a relief cut where the barrel shoulder meets the receiver, you might end up cracking the receiver. Enjoy that piece of history. I'm just a little jealous!

  15. The dominance by the Bills was a surprise to me. This was the first game I've seen them in & they were looking good indeed. They & the Chargers look to be the best two teams in the AFC right now, IMO. Either team would beat the Titans by 21+ points, IMO.

  21. Another great statement by Bobsguns: As for A&M, I doubt Bama gives a fat, furry rat's ass if the game is at home or away. They just went to the Swamp & won, arguably one of the toughest places to play in the SEC on the road. And another great statement by Bobsguns: Funny you think A&M may beat Bama but not Arkansas, who just beat (guess who?) A&M. Can't wait for your next words of wisdom.

  25. LOL! I've been telling yo guys this for the last couple of years. The Canik line has been largely under-rated and overlooked. But their value is being realized now. Interest and good to great comments have gone way up. Unfortunately...so have the prices. I bought in the onset. Very happy I did.

  27. Interesting on the effort question. I too have had some experience in recovering stolen guns. Some 25+ years ago, I had some guns stolen from my gun business, a few cheap FMJ double pistols and a few Russian SKSs, and at that time, SKSs were not expensive <$100. Anyway, about 5 years later, the police agency that made the report contacted me about being informed that one of the guns was recovered in a border county in North Carolina. I called the NC agency, they said I could pick it up anytime. I was not in a big hurry to drive over there, and actually forgot about the gun for about 6 mos to a year, then remembered and decided what the heck, I will go get it, called to confirm that I was coming over. The same NC police dept. argued with me they did not have the gun, got real hateful with me on the phone, denied they ever had it, wanted to know what other agency had reported it recovered. I even talked to same person who confirmed that they had it a year earlier. I dropped it, and never pursued it. I was younger and had a no care attitude. I tell this story because I had another agency in East Tennessee to recover another gun several years later, and they confirmed it was one of the cheaper guns I had stolen, but they too were not too friendly with me on the phone, having a jerk attitude, and telling me the difficult process to get the gun. Since the gun had no real value to me, <$40, I dropped it too. I wonder if this systematic of other agencies on gun recovery? Now if my Russian SKSs are ever recovered I will probably be very tolerant of the process and more apt to recover them.

  29. I’ve killed a bunch with a Ruger 22/45 over the years. Two different setups. Historically I enjoyed hunting with a set of crimson trace grips zeroed at 25 meters. That’s fun as long as the sun isn’t too bright. My preferred setup is with a RMR up top. Suppressed, it’s not even that critical that you hit it the first time. It’s a great skill to develop that will feed you in a survival situation. There’s a reason that my 22/45 is always in my ruck. Tossing a golf ball out a ways and shooting it on the move is great for developing the skill.

  32. I cringe whenever I hear someone adamant on “cleaning up” an old milsurp even when there is no reason to, especially one as valuable as this. It usually involves screwing with the stock hoping to make it look brand new. Big, big mistake.

  38. Depending on how much trouble it would be, I'd want it back just to be a PITA to New York. My FIL was the head of security for a local grocery store chain. On day many years ago a real pro decided to rob his store. The guy had done his homework and knew who my FIL was. He came in, got a cart and proceeded to act like a regular customer. Came up behind my FIL and without any warning knocked him out cold! He took a 2" Model 10 from my FIL, went up front and robbed the store. Some 20 years later, FIL got a call from the Sheriff's Dept saying his gun had been recovered. He got it back and it was in surprisingly good shape.

  41. Garufa is right about the model / type 1's. I had one, gave it to my son & he sold it!. The type one's are very rare and are sleepers. They have no markings on them what so ever. The contract for type 1's were navy only and few of them survived the war above the pacific's surface. Like the 38's they had chrome bores with the last produced gain twist rifling. Back when I worked at Auto Ordnance, I would at times go across the street and hang out at Duffy's gun shop that was 2 doors down from Numrich Arms. Duffy was a vet that served in the Army as an Ordnance tech. After the war, he worked at Aberdeen Proving ground. He told me that after the war, he was one of the guys tasked with testing the limits of foreign military weapon designs. He said, for rifles, they would pin the bore shut just ahead of the chamber, load some hot proof loads and see about blowing up the receivers. The Springfields and Mausers were able to be damaged beyond use in this way but the Arisaka action with stood the blast by spitting the barrel out of the receiver with the barrel threads left behind within the receiver ring. They would coil out those threads, put on another barrel and the same results. After a few barrels were spit out, they barreled the receiver and the gun would shoot as if nothing was damaged from the multiple blasts. He said the Japs imported all of their steel from the Germans and the receivers were more than likely from Soligen steel works. At the time Soligen was into the most pure iron ore mines being mined in the world.
