  5. I like hard cast 158 gr. swc. in both Hp and solid. I've even loaded some 170 gr. swc in .38 cases. I've never tried them to see what kind of penetration they get but, should be good. I've shot some 124 gr. cast RN in 9mm too.

  7. I haven't thinned down like that myself but it seems like I would start at the back of the safe and work towards the front in the event that I needed to. I have a lot of guns that I've never fired and at this point those fill a very small "what if" niche. The majority of those were given to me by my father in law when his mental health deteriorated. I don't feel that it is my place to sell them despite not having a use for most of them. I figure I'll just pass them down to my son eventually. Of course if you aren't selling to find another project, clean them up good, lube them heavy, and stick them in the safe. Let them be someone else's problem once you are gone. Especially if having them makes you happy. Just the musings of a middle aged man

  8. I am excited to announce the Dead Zero "Own The Night" 2-Gun Match is booked for Saturday night, Feb 18th, 2023 at Dead Zero Shooting Park, just south of Spencer, TN. This will be a 2-Gun (rifle/pistol) match with two divisions: NVG Division: allowed ZERO visible light and must use IR or no light at all. White Light Division: allowed any light (or combination of lights) they want. Weaponlights definitely make things easier, but you can shoot the whole match with a handheld or headlamp if you want. Rifle must shoot a rifle round, and pistol must shoot a pistol round. Everything else is allowed as long as it's safe. You will need a safe holster for your pistol. If we have enough NVG folks we'll have a dedicated NVG squad (maybe two!). If not we can mix NVG folks in with the white light shooters and just make everyone go completely dark while the NVG people shoot. 5 stages. Rifle out to 100 yds max. One stage must be shot "Passive" with no additional light (IR or white) allowed. Moving targets. Exploding targets. Running through the woods in the dark while engaging targets. Great challenges and fun! The cost is a little higher than our regular monthly match because I'll have some extra expenses to cover, but it's still stupid-cheap at only $30. 10. Now that’s a plan. I’m 65 in the same situation. But having owned a gun shop I’m in a little deeper and dumber than most. I’m gonna start working this plan. Thanks!

  11. If it kicks hard, sell it. If it's inaccurate, sell it. If it's broken/non-functional, sell it. If it's chambered in a funky cartridge you can't buy or is super expensive, sell it. If you look at it & have no feelings for it one way or another, sell it. That should get you down to guns you like, you can shoot, & you can still enjoy having around.

  12. Just my $.02. How I found this forum was probably back in 2019 or so when I googled shooting from property in Tennessee and an old thread came up (feel like I reread it last couple weeks). Considering that’s how I found the forum I’ll share my admittedly lengthy experience. I’m fortunate enough to have a place that’s secluded, decent sized driveway and other than a neighbor at the bottom of the hill (who i shoot with) no neighbors for many acres. The house beside me is unoccupied, and 5-700 yards away. Maybe over a quarter mile down the street Is another older couple, and grandson who lives on the property, and in the other direction the nearest house is easily a quarter mile. The older couple a quarter mile away I typically hear him sighting in rifles at the start of deer season. Occasionally hear someone run a magazine or two. As I’m typing this now someone has been doing some small caliber and rifle shooting for 45 mins up on the holler behind my house. It is definitely not uncommon to hear people shooting. I try to explain it to people back home, that it’s somewhat reassuring to hear gun fire, and that on most holidays one person goes out to fire off a few rounds it sort of becomes a chain reaction throughout the surrounding area. I joke that back home when we heard gunfire, we’d try to find a block built load bearing wall to get behind. But now it actually puts me at ease knowing that the neighbors are proficient in firearm training. Cops are most definitely 10-12 minutes away, and the times neighbors have called the response time was lacking. It’s peaceful, just sitting and counting the rounds off in the distance. We also look out for each other, such as when a neighbor had some stuff stolen off of his porch, I would leave my truck down there or sit on his deck when he was out and still shaken up about it. After the criminal was released (far too early for his three page rap sheet) from jail, and went back for an easy score on the same porch, a sort of unofficial neighborhood watch email group was created (I stay out of it but appreciate them doing that). I saw the older couple in their driveway and pulled in to tell them another burglary had happened and they thanked me, and we all watch the unoccupied house as sometimes people trespass (kids, copper thieves, misfits). The other morning I was hunting and heard a metallic tumble from the abandon property. Figuring the deer were spooked, I checked it out for them, while being mindful not to trespass. So granted that’s a long backstory. Getting to the meat of it, I shoot on my property. I don’t with much frequently these days, maybe twice a month but in the past over COVID maybe 2x a week, even daily out of boredom for a week or so. I do shoot on nearly every holiday. I have a couple of friends come over and break in their guns once every couple of months. I let my neighbor and his friends shoot at my place when I’m not home. The advice I got from my elderly neighbor whose lived here all of his life was: Holidays are always fine, try to keep it to 30-45 minutes, don’t shoot after dark unless it’s pests. I have a natural berm, couple of plates and targets, and I know where all of my bullets are going to end up. There’s no chance of a stray going remotely close to anyone due to the landscape. With all that being said, 80% of my property shooting is .22. Run a couple practice mags of 9, and the lady will run her .380. Other than that we plink from the porch. If you come over, you’re not going to be obnoxiously mag dumping 30-rds of 5.56/7.62. Sure some quick fire here and there or a training drill but you can do the redneck trash pile mag dump at your place and bother your own neighbors. Typically I end a session with 5-10 shells varying between slug/buck/bird depending on the season. I do this to try to be respectful, even though I know that I can legally shoot however (i had my neighbor shoot buck while I was down the hill at his place and the sound of buckshot/HD rounds travels loudly) . Most of the time I try to call my neighbor to make sure he’s not taking a nap. Heck, I’ve only run a dozen slugs out of the tactical shotgun I bought so far because I didn’t want to be creating so much noise echoing in the holler. Same for 10mm/.40. I guess what I’m saying is maybe scout the neighborhood I agree with it’s how much your neighbors make, my neighborhood is pretty much all generational families and not poor but not wealthy successful blue collar types. Since finishing this post, two other people have started shooting, I thought I heard a deer rustling and saw a car instead parked at the abandoned house and walked down to see if it was my neighbors or not. When in doubt, buy some land from/near the guy whose got a feeder out on the yard and a pickup. Get to know your neighbors, try not to overdue it, and let’s all hope that a Karen doesn’t move into the abandoned house next door. I’ve always said, you can say whatever you’d like to about me and I’m far from perfect… but I’ve always been a good neighbor.

  14. We tried to run this bill last year, the Rep. from Crockett County (Chris Hurt) had the bill, but the Chairman of the House Civil Justice sub refused to let him run the bill for vote, they told the sponsor he could present it only if he agreed to take it off notice as soon as he did, I asked him to run it and ask for a recorded vote, he refused. Got to play b all with Leadership you understand.

  17. Depends on how much you enjoy dealing with pissed off neighbors. Look at the proposed lot. Pretend you now live in the nearest house, and you are an anti gun Karen type person. How happy would you be to find out a shooting range is coming soon to said property? That’s who you’ll shortly be dealing with.

  22. A suit is being prepared for the 28th Judicial District with respect to the unconstitutional mandate of denying carry of firearms inparks, greenways and other recreational areas by the State of Tennessee. These type plaintiffs are needed, as we have filled one aspect already: - concealed permit holder - individual who carries under the permitless carry law - individual 18-21 who can and does own firearms, including a handgun, but who is not eligible under the first 2 categories. Plaintiffs would need to be willing to state they would like to be able to carry firearms in these areas with seeking permission from the State as they know it to be their Constitutional Right to do so under the 2nd and 14th Amendments. This appears to be the easiest State issue to adjudicate and will be the predecessor for many actions to come. Please if anyone who qualifies, or know anyone who does, contact me as soon as possible.

  25. I have a Mossberg 500a pistol grip only Cruiser in 12 ga that ain’t exactly fun to shoot, lol, so when I decided to get one if the smaller shotguns I went for the Shockwave in 20 ga. I’ve read much about the trade off between 20 and 12 ga as regards perceived recoil and effectiveness at close ranges, so this affected my decision. I’ve only fired it a few times, but I don’t regret my decision. Only thing I ‘might’ have done differently is go with a semi auto variant.

  29. I can attest to this! I've had a Taurus 605 revolver for years, for about the first box of ammo was with the factory wood grips...it was brutal. Changed the grips to a set of Hogue and it helped immensely. At one time Taurus had a deal going that they would port the barrel and do an action job for $50.00, I couldn't resist. When I got the revolver back I was literally stunned. The porting did a lot to help tame the recoil and the action job they did was outstanding! That little 605 has a dbl & single action trigger that I would stack up to any revolver, absolutely like glass, I've owned Pythons that weren't as impressive.

  32. Texas Rangers circa 1907, that's Frank Hamer on the top left with his 1894 Winchester. Along with police officers from Louisiana and Texas, Hamer was the man that brought down Bonnie & Clyde. The man sitting bottom right with the Luger is John H. Rogers, the man that hired Hamer into the Rangers. Hamer used a Remington model 8 chambered in .35 Remington in the roadside ambush of Bonnie & Clyde.

  33. Speaking of Chattanooga. I was just transported from Nashville to CHI Memorial last night. I had a minor stroke Thursday night and the ER that I went to doesn't have a neurologist on staff. No hospitals in Middle Tennessee with a neurologist on staff had any beds to take me. Waited 24 hours and finally got a 3-hour ambulance ride down to Chatanoo. Happy New Year's. Glad to be alive. Are you able to see the thread on the AKFiles?

  35. The enhanced carry permit needs to actually be enhanced so that you can legally carry in more places. The 'no guns' signs weapons crime should not apply to the enhanced carry permit. That should only be a trespass issue if someone does not leave when asked just as it is in most states. Full college carry should also be legalized for enhanced permits. College employees can already carry with enhanced permits in TN plus most of the states bordering TN already have legal college carry for people with carry permits.
