  1. What 3 things are the most important for a kid to learn between the ages of 8-10? Firearm-related or not. Specific, practical skills are preferred, but all opinions welcome.
  2. I have no desire to watch the video, but the freedom of others to make the video available for the public to watch serves an important purpose and is consistent with core principles of government by the people.
  3. This is encouraging. I appreciate your work for Tennesseans.
  4. I hear you and agree. But to me it's all about my assessment of the threat to personal safety. If in that moment I think I can end the threat to my safety by giving the thug my car, I'll do that and consider it among the best outcomes.
  5. When I'm pulling into my garage, my mobility is limited. I can't easily run away. Few (if any) witnesses can see me. And I have to focus on performing a task (rather than my surroundings). All of that makes me especially vulnerable. To some extent it's possible to counterbalance those factors by being vigilant and lawfully armed. The self-defense expert in the news story covered the basics (try to distance from the threat, give up stuff, and don't let them take you to a different place). To me what's even more important is to avoid routines.
  6. As an owner of a near twin of this holster (but for a 6" GP100), I can tell you this is a good deal on a high quality item.
  7. It's a hedge against the dollar losing value and works because precious metals are sought after worldwide, even in a bad economy. Say I have $60. I save $20 of it in cash. I invest $20 of it in stocks. And I pay $20 for an ounce of silver. Then the U.S. suffers a severe economic downturn. My stock is now worth only $5. And due to outrageous inflation, the $20 cash I have can only buy $10 worth of goods. But the value of my ounce of silver rises with inflation. It also rises because other people buy gold and silver in bad times. So I can sell my ounce for $40, or $50. My net position in dollars is stabilized by the change in pm value.
  8. To me those are tools with different purposes. Urban v. rural, human v. animal attack, ability to maneuver to cover, and ability to run away are relevant factors. If I can't maneuver easily and use cover (say I'm injured to begin with, or caring for a small child) or if I think multiple assailants are likely, I want the ability to fire rapidly and reload quickly. In a rural area where the most likely threat is an animal, I'd rather have the .44.
  9. Buffalo Bore makes a really hot .357 magnum 180 grain lead hard cast flat nosed round. That's what I load in my .357 when hiking in the Smokies. You might check to see if they sell a similar .38 +P cartridge.
  10. We lost power at the house this morning. I stoked the fire in the living room fireplace and carried in two loads of wood. I got out our sleeping bags. Then I gathered the wife, daughter, dog, and cat into the living room and nailed up blankets over the doorways so we were only heating that room. When the power came back on 40 minutes later, I could have felt goofy. Instead, I just felt grateful. Y'all stay safe. And merry Christmas!
  11. What little I've read is that lead hard cast ammo penetrates further than hollow point rounds and is only recommended as a self-defense round when you specifically need that feature (e.g., for wildlife). The Ballistics by the Inch website might have some gel test data on hard cast in .38 or .357 - you may want to check that out.
  12. Like jhc77, I've had a Fenix PD35 for years and have had no problems with it. I think it would fit the OP's purpose well.
  13. In line with 62caster's comment, I think there's a big difference between a DA revolver with a 10 or 12-pound trigger (SP101, etc.) vs. a semiautomatic pistol with a 5 or 6 pound trigger.
  14. I have not read the full opinion, just the summary kindly provided by Mr. Harris and TFA. I believe the case is not about shipping but rather the federal statute making it unlawful to possess a firearm if a person is the subject of a restraining order, charged with domestic assault, etc. If memory serves, back during the flurry of federal litigation re: the Affordable Care Act, one U.S. district court judge in Texas (maybe J. Reed?) entered an injunction that purported to be nationwide. In regard to the decision of a few days ago, it will be interesting to see whether federal district court judges enter similar "nationwide" injunctions prohibiting the enforcement of federal firearms laws they find unconstitutional.
  15. I agree with the OP about the 5- and 6-shot Rugers. I think at one time they made a 7-shot version of the GP100 that had problems, but if you need more than 6 rounds of .357, that's what speedloaders are for.
  16. The Tennessee Court of Appeals recently issued a decision finding it unconstitutional for a subsidized public housing entity, as landlord, to prohibit tenants from possessing firearms: https://www.tncourts.gov/sites/default/files/m2021-00329_-_unsigned_opinion.pdf The Court's decision was based partly on the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in Bruen.
  17. Just a quick note to thank Matt, Jay, Ellis, and all the ROs and volunteers who put on last night's amazing white light 5k match! The stages were fun and challenging, and the opportunity to test skills and equipment in a nighttime setting was invaluable. Carrying a fallen soldier's dog tags was an honor and was a physical reminder of the match's purpose while out there on the course. I enjoyed seeing several folks from last year, and the camaraderie made for a good time for all. Excellent work, gentlemen! Fellow TGOers, if you haven't been to a Legion event yet, you're missing out.
  18. @ Matt in TN - Thanks for your feedback. It's a Streamlight Pro Tac Rail Mount 2. I haven't measured at night with a known distance, but with new batteries the manufacturer claims 297m of throw and 90 min. running time on "high" setting - hopefully that will light up the distant targets enough. I'm heading out this afternoon to look for low power 2x or 3x fixed magnification optics. I've never used optics much, so this match will be a fun chance to learn. Thanks also for sharing about MSG Yost.
  19. It's been that way for quite a while now. (It wasn't safe on a Boston street on March 5, 1770, for example, and it wasn't safe on Lexington green in the spring of 1775.) That's why when they wrote down a note to posterity about the right to carry arms, the Founders didn't describe it as merely a right carry in places where bad things often happen, or have previously happened, or are statistically likely to happen... Malo periculosam libertatem quam quietum servitium.
  20. I'm registered for the white light 5k. PT: When we were 100 days out from this year's match, I set a list of target run times (3 miles, no load) and dates by which to hit them. My ultimate goal is to do 3 miles under full load in 29 minutes by match day. Anyway, here's the aspirations vs. ugly truth of how I stack up so far: Target date/Time - Actual date/time 5/31 - 32:00 6/1 - 26:45 6/10 - 31:30 6/11 - 28:22 6/20 - 31:00 6/23 - 26:09 6/30 - 30:00 7/1 - 25:27 7/10 - 29:30 7/7 - 25:52 7/20 - 29:00 7/27 - 24:45 7/31 - 28:30 7/29 - 24:06 Marksmanship: I committed to at least one range visit with rifle and sidearm every 4 weeks. Still need to buy an optic and practice low light shooting - not up to snuff on that. Any recommendations for an optic to use in white light nighttime shooting out to 50 or 75 yards? Comms: I committed to learning how to use my hand scanner effectively so I can quickly plug in the target frequency on event day and monitor. On track so far. Land nav.: I need to recheck my pace count with full load and add ranger beads to my kit. Also need to buy a good terrain map of Dead Zero. That's me for now. Looking forward to this year's match!
  21. Julie London. "Cry Me a River." Madeleine Peyroux. "Between the Bars." Hugh Laurie. "The Weed Smoker's Dream."
  22. @ the OP - Both are good choices, but to me the 5-shot .357 is preferable. The flexibility to use .38, .38 SPL, and .357 Magnum ammo has value. Also seems like a .357 gun, used reasonably, should hold up longer. (Stronger top strap, forcing cone, etc.)
  23. @ Chuck - Agreed on all counts. Tragic. Reminds me of what happened at Harry Beckwith's gun shop in Florida in 1990. Wish the situation in Georgia had played out more along those lines.
