1. First, I'll admit I'm not the most knowledgeable about the AR15 and all of its accessories, but I was watching Face The Nation this morning and our beloved Senator Feinstein was babbling on so I decided to listen to what stupidity she could spew. One thing that I giggled at when was she said that there were these collapsible stocks for the AR15 that made them fully automatic! Did anyone else see/hear this? Is there some sort of "bump fire" collapsible stock that will do this?
2. I just picked up one of these in a trade and really like it. I also have a MTAC and they do feel identical. If I had to choose between them, my nod would go to the MTAC only because of the thinner belt clips.
3. I used to carry and XD45C in a MTAC. It was tucked underneath a white dress shirt with a tie and dress slacks. A Leatherman belt helped tremendously!
4. Out of curiosity, I was watching magazine prices on eBay to see how crazy they would get. It seemed like every time I would "watch" one, it would disappear the next day. Huh? Researching it further, I found out that even the accessories you sell have to meet California restrictions. This is why you can only find 10 rounders on eBay. Some of the craziness I saw was: Two Glock 23 mags (13 rounders) at $152 with 3 days to go. One Glock 22/23 extended mag (22 rounder) was up to $80 after just 6 hours and had 6 1/2 days to go! These prices were having me consider putting some of my extras on there, but eBay is killing off the listings before you can ever see what a mass of scared sheep are willing to pay! eBay and PayPal! Do you have to prove you have been neutered to work there!
5. I sent you the directions to a spot at Chickasaw, but my son also got a nice 5 point at Shelby Forrest 2 years ago. Shotgun only and just on limited days. You will need to get a special permit from the office at the entrance and they don't open until 9 am or so. The permit is good for the whole season though.
6. It was crowded on Saturday, but we only saw one other person on Sunday. All we have access to is public land so we do what we have to.
7. My Father-in-Law, my son, and I went back to Chickasaw today so I could actually hunt. About 8:15 a.m., my son sent me a text saying he was getting out of the tree at 8:30 so he could go to the truck and get something to eat. (He was sitting in the same tree he did yesterday when he dropped the 6 point.) I agreed and started picking up my things since I had the keys to the truck. At 8:20 a.m., I heard a shot come from his direction and I quickly sent him a text. It went unanswered for 15 minutes and I finally received a text back as I was making the hike back to the truck. He had dropped another buck. This one was a good sized spike, but not near as big as the 6 point the day before. This is the first one that he drug out of the woods and field dressed by himself. With my gun and my climbing stand, my son has killed three good sized deer already in the past two years on public hunting land! I gotta get my stuff back...... 8.
GOOD JOB YOUNG MAN!!! Looks like a neck shot, cool.
High shoulder, just behind the neck. Close....
9. My 14 year old dropped a nice 6 point this morning around 8 a.m. (He took a doe there last year at 276 yards.) Remington 700 in .308. (Mine, but I never get to hunt with it.)
10. Does anyone other than SOG offer a belt clip that sits so low in the pocket? I also like the opening safety that CRKT knives have. Where do they stand in comparison to SOG? (My point of reference.)
11. Thanks, Major Kong! I really liked that one when I saw it on the Kershaw site. Does Kershaw make anything that sits lower in the pocket though? I've had a SOG Flash 2 and the Aegis and both knives could "disappear" in a back pocket and only show the clip. The Blur looks like it would still show a little bit of the top of the knife. I'm always in a "professional" environment and some Fruit Loops are actually skiddish of anyone having something other than a little pen knife.
12. I'm not an expert on knives, but know how to find the people that are. I lost my SOG Aegis that I liked very much, but wanted to look at other options before I picked up another one. I'd like to throw out some requirements/preferences and see what the knife officianados could recommend. 1. Back pocket carry with a clip that allows it to sit deep in the pocket with only the clip showing. (I wear dress slacks and a tie to work and don't need the top of the knife sticking way out of the top.). Black clip preferred to stay relatively covert. 2. Relatively flat for such back pocket carry 3. I prefer a spring assisted opening mechanism 4. The Aegis had the little stud on the blade for opening, but I do like the flipper idea on the Kershaws 5. I like a 3 1/2 inch blade 6. Non-serrated blade preferred as my sharpening kit doesn't have the right piece to sharpen serrations. 7. Looking to spend $50-$75 8. Prefer nothing shiny. (Black blade and case) 9. It will be used for everyday use, but I'll also take it hunting. I think that's about it, but you may open my eyes to something I didn't think about. Tanks for your help!
13. My boys (10 and 14) took a couple of does Saturday afternoon. The older son shot the smaller doe and his response was, "It looked bigger in the scope." LOL None the less, meat in the freezer!!! Both shots were dead on at about 150 yards. The 10 yr old was using a Remington 700 Youth in .243 and the 14 yr old was using a Remington 700 SPS in .308. I am truly blessed.
14. My boys (10 and 14) scored these does at the LBL Youth hunt this weekend. The older boy shot the smaller doe and said, "It looked bigger in the scope." Both shots were dead on at about 150 yards.
15. I liked the magazine, but it just felt cheap being all plastic.
16. I'm trying to get something for my 10 year old to take deer with and saw this at BPS. I wasn't real impressed, but it seems to get good reviews on the internet. Am I just finding people that are giving it props because Ruger advertises with them or is a really decent rifle that will start climbing in price quickly. The funny thing is that I thought the removable magazine was cheap, but all the review seem to rave about it. Does anybody have first hand experience with them?
17. I found a replacement stock on Ebay. It was actually for a 583.13 rather than a 583.16 but, it fit and I am happy with it. I do need to "adjust" it a little bit by the safety. The safety is pinned tight and won't slide. I plan to break it down this weekend for a thorough cleaning and take care of this minor issue.
18. Tree Stand Finder may have been running at 10:34 but, was definitely not running at 8:08. I've hunted down there several times this year and this never happened before. Hmmmmmm Unfortunately, AT&T doesn't offer an unlimited plan. I'm normally using only 30-50mb per month though and don't have a need to tether.
19. ICloud was turned off as well as automatic updates. 44mb and 70mb is a LOT of data even for these!
20. CALLING ALL CELL PHONE FREAKS! People much smarter than me. I have an IPhone 4s and normally use 30-50mb of data per month. (I have a 200mb plan.) Obviously, I don't steam videos, use Pandora, or etc. Yesterday, I took my 9 yr old hunting and was surprised to get a text from AT&T when I got back to the house saying I had used over 65% of my data plan. When I checked it, I was at 150mb!!! There was an entry at 8:08 a.m. for 44mb and another at 10:34 for approximately 70mb!!! I called AT&T and the lady agreed this was highly unusual for me and promised to have someone call me after the end of my billing cycle to straighten things out if I do go over. The only thing I can think of is that I did use an app called Tree Stand finder to GPS locate and mark where we put the blind. We didn't get to the woods until around 8 a.m. and I don't think I even used the app that early. I know this probably belongs on a phone forum somewhere but, I trust all of you much more. Any ideas of what may have happened? I just had another thought..... Where I parked the truck, there is little/no service. The phone will bounce back and forth between "Searching" and "No Service". The hill we were hunting on actually gets fairly good reception. Around the 8:08 a.m. time, we were just getting our coveralls on at the truck and at 10:34 a.m., we had gone back to the truck to get the 9 yr old a snack. This MUST have something to do with it.
21. Thanks, Chris! I didn't think it would be worth very much but, I like the idea of letting my sons shoot a 60 year old shotgun and appreciating where gun technology has made it to. I guess I like "old school". I wear self winding watches and carry a Zippo lighter. I did call Numrich and the lady said they get these stocks in from time to time so I'll just have to keep checking their site.
22. I'm actually in a blind with the 9 yr old now and we haven't seen anything today. (He doesn't sit still very well yet.) He and I used my brother-in-law's rangefinder and determined the shot my 13 yr old made on Wednesday was 276 yards. His first deer ever, last year, was at 30 yards. I'd say he has stepped up his game!
23. Today, my wife's Grandfather gave me an old 12 gauge shotgun he had in the back of his closet. He loaned a guy $50 a long time ago and the guy gave him the gun as collateral. The guy disappeared 20 years ago and never came back for the gun. The shotgun is a JC Higgins 583.16 and appears to have been a gun that was recalled because of a screw that could come loose and let the bolt come out. It has a cool vintage look that may end up just being a wall hanger. The only problem with it is the stock is cracked. Anybody know much about these other than what I have been able to Google?
