  1. I understand your point Dave. Actually, my wife agrees with you. I would call you a girly-man for agreeing with her, but you are probably a better shot than I am. I think LE should be considered a professional position and staffed (and paid) appropriately. Making revenue stops degrades the profession of Law Enforcement in my eyes and I think in the eyes of the general public. Stopping people who are not realistically being unsafe does not add to the image of LEOs as professionals IMHO and has the effect of keeping salaries low. I'd rather pay an extra nickel per hundred on my taxes and not have to worry about speed traps. Hell, it would bring in tourist dollars. Advertise that you don't do speed traps in your county. It would be like Bristol during race weekends. You have to be weaving over the median to get a DUI during a couple of weeks of the year there. And that's for reasons of revenue enhancement ignoring public safety.
  2. Dave, I know a lot about cops and quotas of moving and non-moving violations on a shift. In Johnson City it's four of each per shift for example. It's done for revenue, not safety. The money does eventually come back to the departments indirectly. And I have very informed conversations, not to mention lunch, with top LE people in the region on a frequent basis. A year or two ago, the state had to take away Unicoi County's receipt of money they made on I-26 folks coming from North Carolina because it was like the old fashioned speed traps that counties did in the 50s to raise revenue. It got to be an embarrassment to the whole state. Dare County, NC did it to raise money for their school system in the 70s when I was there. That's why we have so many caught speeders - revenue enhancement. It's an old practice. In the mid 70s NC Highway Patrol officers would sit down with their commanders once a month and the commander would write down a number on the pad in front of him and circle it repeatedly. That number was your quota of traffic stops for the month, but nothing was ever said about it. Plausible deniablility that way. "Why we never talk about traffic stop quotas." Maybe Macho will drop in here and tell you about the clowns in Lee County Virginia law enforcement. The practice actually takes time from real law enforcement and degrades the image of Law Enforcement.
  3. I know they talked several years ago about cutting veterans some slack but didn't pass any of the legislation. If there is a different procedure for vets, I don't know of it. Any of you training guys want to give us the straight scoop?
  4. Over the years I have developed a tremendous respect for professionally acting officers and extreme disgust for those who do not act professionally. I have told pretty much all of my LEO friends and acquaintances that I consider the current practice of paying for much of their salary through traffic citations to be degrading to their integrity and the respect for their position.
  5. The one I had was SA/DA and in the LE box. I think that meant you got an extra magazine. It was accurate enough and reliable but there was a disturbance in the force and I just couldn't get confident with it. I understand why some people would want a DAO, but not a SAO trigger on a carry handgun. How about educating me?
  6. As usual, I' have to be a ray of sunshine. I had a P220 and got rid of it. Nothing horrible about it, it just didn't work for me.
  7. Well Fred, we'll just have to disagree. You think Glocks are wonderful for some reason and I think that from an engineering standpoint that they are poorly designed and unsafe. Accurate - Reliable - and Unsafe. They are the choice for countable numbers of professionals because they are reliable, accurate, relatively inexpensive compared to other duty-type weapons when bought in numbers on a contract, don't have a safety to confuse the situation in an a adrenaline flow and very importantly for PR reasons, don't have a visible cocked hammer that scares the brain-dead public. You might also be surprised how many professional departments are moving away from Glocks. The professional progression around here seems to be from Rugers (in small departments where the officers buy their own duty weapons) to Glocks to H&Ks. Even relatively small departments around here that provide duty weapons are moving to H&Ks. The old circus trick of throwing the Glock into the parking lot and running over it doesn't sell as many Glocks these days. Yes, I actually saw a Glock rep do that several years ago. Departments talk to each other and read the problems other officers are having with their service weapons. "Savvy civilians" who buy them tend to do so because that what the cops carry. As I've said many times, Glocks are perfectly acceptable as LE duty weapons. They aren't the best choice if money is less of a concern, but they are fine. But IMO the "public" (LEOs are "civilians") who use Glocks should rethink their choice. I know you think I have a bias against Glock. Why I would have that, since I've owned two, is beyond my understanding. What I have are conclusions based upon analysis of the mechanics of the weapon not some sort of irrational feel that I just don't like it. I don't know why Glock hasn't had a super suit yet. Jennings was sued out of existence for working like a Glock. My guess is that attorneys want to go after companies that do not have sufficient resources to drag out appeals forever. Such is contingency law. But that's just a guess.
  8. Mark, it's a HANDGUN Carry Permit and doesn't help you with rifle matters. Carrying with the intent to go armed relates to long arms as well as handguns. There are other regulations for weapons in Wildlife Management Areas that we've been trying to change but haven't gotten it done yet.
  9. Wouldn't want Tower to have to use the same avatar for more than a couple of days.
  10. Tower, just use an animated gif. (I guess) I think renaming the site the "Tennessee KaBoomers and Leg Shooters" is a good idea.
  11. Remember, it's not just loaded magazines. Just having the ammunition in reach is also illegal.
  12. That;s my reading on it. But the police should have come in, seen the situation, and just left.
  13. I don't think you are crazy at all. While I like 1911s, I've never carried one for business, and that includes back before the military chose the Beretta M9. I chose to not carry any pistol in Vietnam, rather than carry a M1911. It gave me extra rounds for the M16 that I needed on a couple of occasions. Since then, I've been in a position where I can carry my own personal weapons. The 1911 was nicknamed the jam-o-matic by military folks a long time ago. Good lubrication seems to be the secret of keeping them working. Grease works better than oil BTW.
  14. Getting away from the OC question for a minute.... TFA has certainly had a voice in passing or defeating some gun legislation. Before I join anything, I like to find out all I can about the group. Frequently the constitution and bylaws of a group are the final determining factor in whether I join. TennFire or any other TFA member, where can I get a copy of the TFA constitution and bylaws? Online is preferable, but another way is fine too. I couldn't find it on the TFA website. I did sign up for the TFA-LAC E-mail Alerts though.
  15. Technically, "out of battery" just means that the gun - whether a handgun or a cannon - is not in condition to fire. As Rabbi said, for our purpose it means that the breech has not completed its forward travel. If the gun fires before the breech is closed, that means that the round has not been placed fully into the chamber and thus gives a weak area than may rupture when the gun is fired. That is bad.
  16. Kinda perpetuates the stereotype of the airhead liberal woman.
  17. I sent him a note saying he's good to go.
  18. Some dolts think I'm a dolt. I'm actually as critical of the guns I carry as the ones I don't.

  20. Maybe we could activate his account, since I have his email address and know he's OK? I don''t know the name he registered as. He's a great guy and knows a LOT about guns, but he's not too much into computers.
  21. I'm sorry but I'm too old, experienced, cranky and logical to put up with flakes. I enjoyed debating nonsense when I was in my teens and into my early 20s. Now, it just annoys me. I thought my brother always handled it well. He would listen to someone spout nonsense for a while, then tactfully tell them, "You know, you are a complete idiot." I hope to become like my brother.

  23. My interpretation is that if you can get to both the gun and loaded magazines (or just the ammo) quickly, you are in trouble. If you don't stop somewhere along the route where it could get stolen, the ammo could just be put in the truck bed. A better solution is to go ahead and get your carry permit.
