Seems to me the suggestions have been constructive. Sounds like the criticisms are also valid. If a customer thinks he's been mistreated, then he has unless the guy is just a big dick-head. You get them like that, but jgrauman, Boomhower, jfglock, dkd83, and Phantom6 aren't. Their comments should be a call to change. The ball is in CCA's court. The owner should have a staff meeting and make some changes. I'd pass out copies of this thread.

I picked up another holster for the P3AT today as a replacement for the pocket holster I'd given away. Next time we're at Pratt's, my gun won't be quite as conspicuous. My handgun I mean. While there we discussed this matter of woman carry. Basically, we came up with the same solution you arrived at Dixie. -

Excellent post DaG. I never understand why shops don't figure this out. First rule of sales is that you can't sell from an empty cart. People will pay more for an in stock item. If it has to be ordered, they can order it direct on Internet for less. It's a matter of business attitude that keeps customers coming back to a shop. Be friendly!!! Stock what people buy. Bring in new items for people to look at and buy. Put in a coffee pot. If suggested, customers will probably supply the coffee. Let them bring their own cups. Keep an old refrigerator with soft drinks and bottled water and sell them at your cost. Put in a few chairs to sit in. Make it a great place to come by and meet friends - a hangout. It's just common sense that brings customers back to your shop and buying stuff from you.

I was wrong about the date, it was 1954 when it was added. Memory is going.... I never heard anything about it being an anti-communist test before. I know Knights of Columbus got the ball rolling, but it took some Scottish Presbyterian minister to get it done. BTW, there is no comma after "nation." It's "one nation under God", not "one nation [pause] under God."

I did register to read it. Just make up lies for the info and keep a junk email address. I use Gmail and never check it. Didn't learn much, but it was nice to suggest it. I despise forums that make you register to read their piddly posts. Roboform (great application) saved the user name and password, but Ccleaner will get rid of the cookie. Who knows, I may quit being mad at them for the registration hassle and look at their site some month when nothing is happening. Aw come on Phantom...Thunderwear has its place. I certainly wouldn't carry a Glock there, but then I wouldn't carry a Glock anywhere except in a duty holster if I could wear hand, arm, leg and butt armor. But a little DA pistol would be fine keeping company with your privates. Keeping a larger gun there gives the girls at the burgerdoodle drive-thru window something to talk about and might lead to more dates. -
I'm not sure why the writer was so agitated by Jefferson being called a Deist, since that's what he was. Ever seen the Jefferson Bible? A copy is here. I also have a WWII Pledge of Allegiance hanging on the wall of my office. Doesn't have that "under God" part. Wasn't added until 1952. I think we have more important things to worry about than adding or deleting religious text to our walls, money and documents.

As has been mentioned, you aren't likely to need too many rounds in a self-protection situation. I conceal carry either a P7M8, with 8 rounds in the magazine or a P3AT with six. Add one more for the round always in the chamber. If I'm in an area that might need more shots, I carry one or more spare magazines. Remember, cops got by for a long time with only five or six rounds in the cylinder. However, that's for a future purchase. Concealed carry for women can be more of a challenge. As men get dressed up, the number of carry options increases. For women, that is generally the opposite. -
I might add that when one goes to church, the church is the gathering of the congregation - not the building where it happens. You can have a church under a tree in a pasture if you like. I'd prefer that. And I still think that praying in the closet is one of Jesus most important teachings.

Philosophy people have a tendency to deal with the abstract early in life and reality later on. At one time I enjoyed debating such things as how many angels could dance on the head of a pin. These days that sort of mental exercise bores me. Real life and death somehow seem more important. Oh to be an airhead college student again.... Russell's Appearance and Reality was an early 20th century work. Socialism was still largely an abstract philosophy rather than the nasty reality of Soviet Communism. We'd have to get into a discussion of nominals and universals leading to Logical Atomism to really go into what Russell was saying, but he knew that reality was ...well... real. Philosophy departments are unfortunately all too often chaired by religious zealots. That was true at one of the universities I attended. The Chaiman of the department had a second class mind and couldn't understand the concepts of anyone who was an agnostic, like Russell or an atheist, like Ayn Rand. So he ignored them and expected his underlings to do likewise. On to other matters, America has a tradition of stated religious tolerance. The statement is seldom backed by practice. Most other nations are not tolerant of religious belief other than theirs. They just don't pretend they are. The Constitution was intended to prevent majority rule on some matters, like religion. Too bad the people don't accept that. There is (was?) a series running on PBS called Secrets of the Dead. They ran a program called Battle for the Bible The web page doesn't do justice to the program. It was actually a pretty good look at how biblical interpretation and its related politics came about at the cost of lots of people being burned at the stake. Which brings up a comment by Curley Howard. In one Three Stooges episode they were given an option of being executed by the guillotine or by being burned at the stake. As Curley said, a hot steak beats a cold chop anytime.

??? I know a lot about Russell. Even have some correspondence with the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation dating back to 1968. Never heard any of this except as a mind exercise. He was willing to get into Descartes' concepts and as a mathematician he had a pretty good philosophical background to do so. Except for some early infatuation with Marxism, Socialism, and Soviet style Communism, he seemed to have a pretty good grasp on reality in my view, and he learned his lesson about Communism. Of course all the professors in the philosophy department hated him. Oh well. But anyway this thread has moved on, or at least gotten more contentious. Reminds me of the discussions of a late acquaintance of mine who liked to remind everyone he was a member of Mensa. He thought he was very smart. Others may have had a different view.

I'm not much different than you Jack. While I'm still a member of a local church - the one I grew up in - I haven't attend a normal service there in about 40 years and have no intention of doing so. Guess I see no need to expend effort to officially quit. My relationship with my God is a personal one and I think "praying in the closet" was a serious admonition of Jesus that separates the true Christian from those who openly and very publicly proclaim their devotion to Christ. Easiest way to get me to distrust you is to tell me what a good Christian (or Muslim or whatever) you are. A couple of quotations from Bertrand Russell come to mind here. I quote Russell not as an authority but just as a guy who I happen to think is right in these matters. "Religion is based ... mainly upon fear ... fear of the mysterious, fear of defeat, fear of death. Fear is the parent of cruelty, and therefore it is no wonder if cruelty and religion have gone hand in hand . . . . My own view on religion is that of Lucretius. I regard it as a disease born of fear and as a source of untold misery to the human race." "Religions that teach brotherly love have been used as an excuse for persecution, and our profoundest scientific insight is made into a means of mass destruction."

Shouldn't be a problem, but what part of Virginia are you headed to? Some areas are much more gun friendly than others.

I have to agree with you. I work with them a lot and some of the LEOs have some strange ideas about what the law is. I will say in their defense that some of the gun laws are written in a confusing manner and sometimes interpreted by the spirit of the law rather than the letter of it.

Guys are used to arranging themselves. I always check my handgun as soon as I get out of the car to make sure the magazine is still locked in. I don't worry about who sees me do it. -
Only if you can catch me to hogtie me first. So much for that idea. Folks, I continue to see continuing personal attacks. Some action has already been taken on this problem and I'm about to take some if this continues. Debate the issues without the personal attacks.

This is a problem with a number of .22s. Rifles as well as pistols. Something to consider when buying a gun. FWIW, my Buckmark eats anything.

Here's my view. The borders can not be made secure. It's a waste of money trying to close them down. People who wish to illegally enter the US will always find a way to do so. The way to prevent the illegal immigration problem is to fine and jail employers who hire illegal workers. We need to set up a way for employers to easily check whether someone is legal. I'd set a limit of five years before any violation of this policy would result in massive fines and required jail time for non-compliant employers. The 14th Amendment need to be amended to eliminate people born here to illegals from automatically being citizens. "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside." This was intended to make slaves citizens, not children of people who enter our country illegally. All government supported benefits need to be denied to non-citizens. After five years, if you are illegal and get caught you serve felony jail time and are deported after the sentence is served. Countries refusing to take back the illegals are suspended from any trade with the US until they do. This situation came about because we needed people for jobs who are willing to work for a reasonable wage. In our welfare state the lazy don't have to work. I don't blame either the employers or the employed workers who took advantage of non-enforcement of our laws. The blame belongs with our government who did not ramp up enforcement and clamp down on employers to prevent this. If they had, these "undocumented" people would have entered legally and this problem would not exist. Granting amnesty to the people who came here illegally is not acceptable. In the next five years they need to go home and come back legally. If they are here illegally after that time, we need to build enough jails to hold them until they serve their time and are deported. You need to understand that if any of the proposed laws are enacted and enforced the end result will pretty much be the same twenty years down the line. It seems to me that the problem is the continuing unwillingness to enforce the laws. Until that changes, we will have a problem will people illegally entering the US in massive numbers.

We have a local gun shop that has that policy. It just makes sense. The sign just says that loaded guns must remain in their holster. We had another gun shop and range that had a sign saying that no loaded guns were allowed. They are now out of business.
