  1. My friend and I are looking for some information on Yanahli WMA for archery deer season. This will be my first bow season and his first in Tennessee, and we're hoping someone can pass along a little guidance. Going in, we've heard there's a good bit of pressure, so we're expecting to need to canoe in and hike. I know it's iffy to ask about spots, but does anyone care to share their knowledge? Places to put in or general areas to check out? Are there other WMAs in/near southern Middle Tennessee where we need to look? Thanks!
  2. We mostly fished when TWRA stocked local rivers this winter, but my friends and I had good luck with Mepps Agila lures on light action spinning gear.   http://www.basspro.com/Mepps-Aglia-Plain-Trout-Kit/product/12091504591735/?cmCat=CROSSSELL_THUMBNAIL
  3. I picked up my 336 after posting a "want to buy" topic in the classifieds here.
  4. Great information here, and my recommendation would be a combination of the two: I have a Redfield Revolution 2-7x that I really like in Weaver rings (I'm guessing low because I had to remove the rear sight), and my rifle shoots Leverevolution well.
  5. How about an 870 Wingmaster? Better fit and finish but still compatible with an ample aftermarket.

  7. Great job! That is really nice ... and coming a couple of weeks after I added a few to an Amazon wish list, you're not making it easy to convince myself I don't need one!
  8. Some friends and I are thinking about a trip this summer to fish the Caney Fork by kayak, and I'm looking for recommendations on outfitters. We'll need to rent kayaks, and we may be interested in hiring a guide.   So can anyone offer some suggestions? Would a guide be worthwhile, or should we just go it alone?   Thanks!
  9. This was my first experience of this kind, and it was an absolute blast.   I especially enjoyed the Benelli and Browning shotguns, Savage bolt rifles and Henry lever actions. Ruger's revolvers and the RIA pistols were price-point impressive, too. The smooth action of the Winchester SXP line was a nice surprise.   I was extremely disappointed with Marlin's offerings. I knew they wouldn't be as nice as the JM-marked classics, but the 336 and 1894 I tried had the worst triggers of the show. I can't believe those rifles were allowed on the show floor. Henry, Uberti and Rossi ate Marlin's lunch and took its milk money. So sad ... I'd wanted a pistol-caliber counterpart for my Marlin .30-30, and it looks like Henry is the frontrunner. One of those octagon-barreled, color-case-hardened beauties by Uberti sure would be nice, too.
  10. I figured I'd show off what I came home with. I needed a birthday present for my dad, so when I saw that CJ Buck was "signing" blades at the Buck booth, I decided to get each of us an orange Mini Spitfire.
  11. I've been spending some time browsing the NRA annual meeting app, picking out vendors I'd like to visit (busy weekend if my "favorites" list is any indication), and was wondering about knife-makers and other associated stops anyone would recommend. That's certainly not my area of expertise, so I'm looking for some input from the experts here. What's not to miss? Thanks!

If anyone is interested in collecting or maybe identifying something you've inherited, the Kindle version is an excellent resource for $25 or so. There's a lot of information that was overwhelming to me at first, but if there are specific models you're looking for, it's nice to be able to access that info should you run across a pawn shop find.
  13. You're right that they're 2-3/4" chambers. I'd realized that about a week after I posted. As much as I'd like to "repurpose" the heirlooms, it's probably more practical to buy a shorter barrel for my Wingmaster.
  14. This late-comer hunter took his first deer with a JM-stamped 336 I picked up from a member here. Its availability and affordability led me to choose the .30-30.
  15. I walked the woods for a few hours. I saw a handful of squirrels but wasn't really shooting today ... just enjoying this spring tease! Didn't see any rabbit but was able to throw a few lures the fish didn't want. Great February Saturday!
  16. I pulled one together for about $550 with a PSA lower and BCG, PTAC mid-length upper, MBUS Pro rear sight and cheapo charging handle. It could have been even less if I went with a classic lower, but I knew I wanted to go ahead and upgrade to a Magpul grip and stock.   If the Ruger had been out when I was in the market, I would have seriously considered the complete rifle.
  17. Man, I don't like seeing activity drop on the forum. I participated in my first deer season and have really enjoyed everyone else's tales.   So who's been after the squirrels, rabbits and other critters? Or is everyone getting out the rods and reels or prepping for spring turkey? I'll be getting out at least one more time on this year's license.
  18. I haven't been able to make it to the range, and I've filled that void by finding purchases I "need" to make and thinking over other firearms-related projects. I'd like to have some feedback on my latest stroke of genius.   I have three Stevens 94 12-gauge shotguns that I inherited from my uncle and grandfather. At least one has a 32" barrel, and the other two are at least 30" — probably 32" too. I believe they are fixed full choke barrels.   I have no idea what sort of firing condition these are in (my grandfather busted a trigger guard on one), but if they're safe, I was thinking I could use two for parts (if needed) and maybe cut one of the barrels down to 20" to 22" and have it cut for choke tubes to make it more versatile to use turkey hunting or whatever. I'm just looking for a way to change three wall hangers into a handy little shotgun. Maybe cut another down to minimum legal length for ultimate maneuverability.   Is there any merit to my ramblings? Is it even possible for these old barrels to be cut down and choke tubes added? Any idea on what it might cost? I don't want to put a lot of money into these or ruin them, and I thought this might be a way to get some utility out of the shotguns that belonged to my relatives. Also, is checking whether these are safe to fire a gunsmith-only task, or can anyone with shotgunning experience tell me whether they'll blow up in my face?
  19. Heck. I keep from lurking in the Handguns forum and then two active 1911 topics have me convinced that now I may need one.   Where in the Nashville area would be a good place to handle Rock Island's offerings? I've not looked for a 1911 so I don't know how readily available they are in local shops. I'd like to see some in person as I debate GI vs. Tactical, fullsize vs. midsize, 9mm vs. .45.   The more you learn, the more you need, I guess!
  20. Hello,   A week or so ago I tried to upgrade to a year membership. The transaction processed (account debited and PayPal transaction), but my membership expired. On my purchases page, it shows a one-year membership that expired after six months (May to November). Did I renew too closely to the expiration of my six-month membership? Or am I jumping the gun and not giving enough time for it to process?   Thanks for your help!
  21. You may have already found the CMP Forums at forums.thecmp.org. There's a South Store forum where members used to post store updates, but it looks like they're not as frequent as a few years ago. I take that to mean there are still nice specimens but not so many collectibles as in years past.   I asked for help before I was headed down and a very helpful member met me at the store and gave me some guidance.
  22. I did an Appleseed event to satisfy CMP requirements.
