My favorite place in the 'Boro area is still the OK Corral Range in Woodbury. About a 25 minute drive, separate rifle range, trap range, shotgun/hi-power berm, and pistol/rimfire range. All outdoors, but it's only $5 for all day, every day. And your 5 bucks covers you for all of the ranges each visit.   It's kinda hard to find the first time, but send me a PM if interested and I'll fill you in on directions. You'd be hard pressed to find a bigger fan of the Mosin-Nagant than myself, but even so, the OP asked about a "FIRST" rifle. I would not recommend a Mosin to a first time buyer, as there is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to proper maintenance and operation. What's more, if you've never shot a rifle and you start with a Mosin, it might put you off rifles for quite a while. Let's face it, the Mosin is a hoss when compared to many other $200 rifles.   If it were me, I would go the .22 route for a first time rifle purchase. You would get to learn the feel & basics of rifle operation without the thunderous report and mule-kick of the Mosin. Also, You can't take a Mosin just anywhere to shoot it-- some ranges will not allow them. However, most ranges WILL allow rimfire (.22) rifles all day, every day. To top it off, even though surplus ammo for Mosin (7.62x54R) can still be had for under 20 cents per round, That's still not as cheap as a 500-round brick of .22lr ammo.

He can have it. The only thing I use Russian steel case ammo for is occasionally in my 91/30... and Wal-mart usually doesn't carry that. I've tried the Tula 9mm and 45ACP, and to me the difference in the price isn't worth it. I'd rather pay a little more and get some brass.    Just my personal opinion-- it may work great for the rest of ya.

The Thunder 45 UCP is also my EDC winter carry weapon. Despite its relative thickness, it's surprisingly easy to conceal when compared to many other 45's due to it's compact height & length. I have more expensive guns, but the Bersa is one of my favorites. It's balanced quite well, dependably accurate, and fairly lightweight for a 45.   I do have to agree about the lack of "condition one" (cocked & locked) on it though. The safety lever doubles in function as a decocker, so condition one is out of the question... even so, it IS SA/DA, so with one in the chamber you're still just a trigger squeeze away from action.

Went today about 11:40, not much of a line to get in at that point, but inside it was so crowded that you couldn't stir the folks with a stick.Saw some decent deals, saw some really crappy ones too. Really, now, a Kel Tec PMR30 for $699? Thats almost $300 over full MSRP for a current production gun! How stupid or desperate do you think I am?   However, I did pick up a pretty sweet deal on a North American Black Widow .22WMR pocket pistol for use a "last resort" BUG. Other than that I bought mainly accessories, mags, holsters, lights, etc.   All in all it was a pretty good show despite the size of the crowd, the heat inside, and the parking situation.

I generally soak/scrub/clean parts in a citrus-based degreaser. Works great and is not nearly as messy or smelly as kerosene or mineral spirits.   As far as the wood, I use the heat gun/paper towel method.

  Alabama is a "may issue" state, not a "shall issue" state. True, there is no required safety course, but whether you receive a permit is entirely at the discretion of the Sheriff of each county. The actual cost for a permit varies widely from county to county.

Kel-tec's parts order turnaround time is awesome, usually 4-5 days max. I got one order in 3 days one time, and that even included a Sunday. Go for it.

Congrats, MJ12! Dennis Mankin is a good instructor and takes it seriously. I didn't take my class under him, but I know him and know that he runs a good class and has a good reputation as an instructor. Nice shooting too. What kind of iron were you using at the range?

I used my old Ruger Single Six .22mag for my CCW class. No grief was given, and it's a cowboy hogleg with a 6.5" barrel. Heck, there were some folks shooting big long 22 target pistols!

No need to mention the name. Those of us here in Murfreesboro know exactly of whom you speak. You'd think that they make enough off of their indoor range fees and their pricey CCW classes, but whatever. It pays to shop around a bit-- there are definitely cheaper places in Rutherford County.

Did the DMV/fingerprint thing on Monday, Aug. 6, and my permit reached my mailbox exactly three weeks later on Aug. 27.

I've shot the cheapo Wal-Mart TulAmmo (9mm and 45ACP) many times with almost no issues at all except for the fact that the charge in these cartridges is way dirtier than most USA-made ammo. Also a bit more noticeable muzzle flash. Doesn't really bother me, since I clean my guns after every trip to the range, regardless. Even so, I've gotten in the habit of paying just a little more to buy better quality USA-made brass ammo. I have heard that some lower-end weapons tend to balk at the steel-case stuff, but I shoot a Bersa Thunder45 UCP and a Kel-Tec PF9 very regularly, and the only issues I've ever had was an occasional stovepipe with the PF9-- probably had more to do with occasional "limp-wristing" on my part than the actual ammo.
