I've been saying "I need a safe" for a while but it's time to stop saying and take action. I've looked enough to know there is a wide range in quality (gauge steel, fire rating, etc.) and that going by the title of "12 gun safe" doesn't mean it'll really fit 12 guns AND the gear I want to include in it. I don't want to spend $3k but $800 probably isn't going to do it either. I'm fine with new or used, even scratch and dent if the deal is worthwhile. The safe will be in my garage which is not climate controlled (yet) but humidity is adequately controlled at 50-55%. What I have: 5 rifles, all with scopes 4 pistols A few ammo cans worth of ammunition I would like to store as well Input I would appreciate from the hive: Where to buy around the Nashville area? I was going to check out Safe House but other than in stock selection, are they better than big box retailers? Any of you want to upgrade and make me an offer on what you have? Fire rating - I'm leaning towards 60min but how much should that matter? Everything is properly insured, nothing has sentimental value, it can all be replaced... hopefully. Size - what do you recommend? As referenced above, a 12-gun will fit my guns but I don't think it'll allow the room for ammo and accessories too. 20-gun seems like an ideal size. Lock - Mechanical vs. Electronic? Electronic seems to be all the rage these days. Is it reliable? Anything else I'm overlooking?

@DBTN, thank you again for the additional info. I ordered a Fury OWB prior to your feedback based on a lot of recommendations I had seen around here. That'll get me started and see how it does. Others I had looked at were more broad in the offerings of light customization but I'll definitely check out Cascadia too (quick glance, they already look like there may be less bulk/waste on the sides). On the Underwood side of things, my order from them is getting delivered today. Interesting note if you have any interest, I called them to ask a few questions and the guy I talked to recommended the 140gr Xtreme over the 200gr Hi-Tek - that's with the consideration that I'll be out West and Grizzly encounters are a real possibility. That really surprised me given the reading I had done on the round and how much everyone loves the Hi-Tek flat nose. Maybe the 140gr Xtreme is newer and just hasn't received the attention? They claim that while it won't penetrate quite as deep, this round will still go plenty deep and leave a far more vicious entry path along the way. Plus, with the 140gr, you'll theoretically have lower recoil for quicker and more accurate follow-up. Again, just passing along what I was told but given the details I've seen them put into their rounds and options, I'll take their word for it and hope I never need to test it.

Bringing back an old one here, @DBTN, appreciate the info and video. Picked up the 4" M&P 10mm yesterday with red dot and was looking to add a light. Your M&P9 and the video were the perfect example of what I'm going for. If I may, what holster are you using for that setup? The purpose of going with the 10mm is for carrying while hiking, most specifically when I'm out west. I'm thinking I'll want OWB for that. I was looking at the PHLSTER Floodlight but their holsters are for the bigger lights, not sure that really matters in the long run.

They also have a female instructor that may bring in more women to her classes. I enjoyed my experience there. Honestly, the women in my class were the best shots there.

  That confirms I need to call.  Paid my license fee the day I took the class and got fingerprinted the next day. Was fully approved and 'mailed' about 3 weeks ago and I still haven't received anything. :yuck:

I want to stop by on Sunday. I have the kids, 5yr and 7yr old, but didn't see anything about 'all ages' or any particular age limits. I know it'll be more of a quick cruise through with them but I don't want to miss it. Anyone know for sure if it's ok to take them or not?

$12.50 per year is the cost of a carry permit.   I just applied for my permit this week. I paid for 3yrs for it to fall in line with my driver's license. My payment was $102.50, exactly $12.50 short of the $115 for 3 years instead of 4. You're given no paperwork to show this breakdown and my receipt doesn't show anything other than the total either. I know when I was fingerprinted, the receipt I was given for that showed they were billing the state $38 but who knows if that's what they state actually pays and there's probably some application fee in there too.   As Oh Shoot says, this is VERY new. The guy that helped me mentioned it has happened within weeks as well. Going forward, I would expect a permit renewal to run $62.50 every 5 years with your license.

APEX DCAEX kit and polymer trigger. Add some night sights and it's one of the best pistols you can buy for a lot less than many others out there. I bought this M&P Armorers tool because I didn't have the proper roll pin punches and such. Cool little tool for $30. 

^What he said. After holding the M&P9 for the first time, I knew it was going to be mine. I read enough threads around the interwebs to know the trigger was the only issue. Ordered the APEX kit before I even picked up the gun.

I think I'm sold on Ooma now! "High five" oh, wait...   We have Comcast phone here at the office. We have 5 lines, one of which is a dedicated fax. Fax was the biggest concern switching over given some reviews but we've had ZERO issues. As said above, when you lose internet, you lose phone too. However, the modems have a backup battery in them so that they're not interrupted by simple power outages. I would say that we lose phones maybe once or twice every few months. It's typically back up and running within a few minutes. I picture it being like at home, someone has to reset the master Comcast router every once in a while for it to operate properly.

Didn't even know it was going on, thanks for posting! I live about 4 miles down the road so it might be fun to go poke around. As said above, I've wasted $10 on far lesser activities.

Cool Springs Walmart had a little of everything this morning but it seemed to be moving fast. I bought the last 9mm but I know they had a case of .40 yet and a couple cases of 22LR.   There have been a lot of "It's almost over!" threads/posts lately but my Wally guy painted a different picture. He said today's shipment was pretty rare as of late and they haven't been seeing much of anything.

I don't like the idea of having anything in the safe. The amount of movement and vibration, all it takes is one gun moving in there to make you very sad when you open the door. Other than that... they're not fun to move! I don't know you but I'd recommend looking on Craigslist for a few guys to handle moving it on to the trailer for you and more when you get to your destination.

Because I don't have anything better to do... Were they this big? Or this big? Always a classic: Catch one of these? I think she's compensating... And I'm done....

Bumping an old thread with "new" info since I came across it for the same reason...   UPS will no longer ship individual to individual. I read it that way in their Terms of Service and also called to verify. Without asking anything, just mentioned I wanted to ship a firearm, I was told that it MUST go to a dealer or manufacturer. Essentially, a dealer must be on one of the two ends. That kills me buying a used gun because I know places like D&T will only accept shipments from other dealers so then you end up paying double transfer fees and killing the value in the used market.   From terms of service: from a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector to an individual from an individual to a licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector

I made a $2400 purchase and paid through PayPal. The worst happened and I didn't get what I was expecting. A PayPal dispute ensued which wasn't bad except for the fact it takes about two months. I submitted my information for review and won. What I bought shipped via freight and I had to ship it all back at my expense ($200) which sucked. Once tracking info showed received, I received a full $2400 refund from PayPal.   As far as a bicycle, it will be a little more cut and dry as to what you're getting. I sold a $1500 Specialized full suspension bike without issue. Just know what your looking at, communicate with the seller directly if possible and enjoy the new bike!

I'm really excited to finally have it. It's been a LOT of reading and research prior to making the decision. Honestly, I think I have more fun prior to buying than after buying. Yeah, I'm weird like that.   I'm going to take it to the range next week stock to make sure it shoots ok. Then I'll have the sights put on and install the Apex DCAEK trigger kit.
