Having said that though, I did have two stoppages with my XD 9 Service last time I was out. Both with the Win USA Forged stuff, so perhaps that is one load they may not like, not sure, haven't shot much of it yet in various guns.

Does the Win USA Forged come in .45 and is it priced reasonably?

  2. Finally got to shoot my XD .45 Service today: 20 rounds of PMC Gold Starfire 230 grain SFHP, 100 rounds of Remington bulk pack 230 grain JHP, 64 rounds of mixed 230gr. JHP, and 120 rounds of Blazer 230 grain aluminum case......no FTF or FTE at all!....the 3 dot sight picture is ok but at some point Ill have to get either a fiber optic front or maybe a BigDot front sight......the sights are center of mass at 5 yards.

The only bad I've ever heard from XD's are from people that didn't have it. At first it was (whine)"I can't find it!" and when they could find it, (whine)"It's too EXPENSIVE!"

My customers that DO own them have been of the philosophy of "Yeah, they're a little pricy...and worth every penny."

As to being dry... a dry lubricant, like boron nitride?

    SWC a/k/a KI7CIL

No sir, she was devoid of any visible lubricant....that has since been fixed.

Personally, I feel that these were very underestimated pistols. Very accurate and easy to hold and shoot. Once you got past the grip safety, for those who hated it, a very good pistol. I still have a 5'' 45 in my safe.

And I never understood what all the ruccus about the grip safety was for. Heck it's just like a 1911. Can you hold a 1911 without crying about it? Same thing.

That's what drew me to it was the grip safety and the way it pointed .....and more importantly how it felt in my hand.

  5. Picked up a XD .45 4 inch service model bi-tone with the 3 dot sights: came with 2 13+1 magazines, hard case with cable lock, and bore brush and a free 20 round box of PMC Gold Starfire .....OTD with tax, background check was $446.  I have not had a chance to shoot her yet, pistol is very dry don't know if it had been in storage for awhile or not....I like the fact the Springfield went to the trouble of polishing the feed ramp.

Far as I can tell, $399 is a fine price, although if it's plus tax you might can beat it on Bud's or where ever. Or not. The .45 models were always more than the 9 and 40. I imagine that's the "basic" package with just a couple of mags.

I have three sizes of the original XDs (all in 9mm), never even tempted to "upgrade" to the M series, as they are just aces, plus had quite a few mags and the full sized ones aren't interchangeable with the M series.

Ok what's the difference between the XD and the XD-M? Is it just the sights?

Caliber wise, it just doesn’t get much better than a .45ACP. (Okay maybe .357Mag, but that doesn’t pertain here :)).

I have 1911’s and love them for range toys. I can carry them, but I don’t. They are big and heavy. If I’m going to carry something that big it will have 15 rounds of .40S&W.

I would suggest you check out the S&W Shield. It will fill both your applications. (And with rebates they have been pretty cheap lately)

I like them in .40S&W, but you can get it in 9MM. Then your Wife/Girlfriend can shoot it also. :D

EDIT: Guns are like anything else; application driven. No gun will cover all applications. So if you can afford it; keep the 1911 and add another carry gun. Or three...or four...or five.

Yeah that's my rub about the RIA 7+1 where even a FN 509C, CZ P series and the 2.0 S&W Compact have 12 plus including Glock.

Generations of folks have carried bare bones 1911s without night sights or rails to good affect.

I’ve yet to shoot a RIA pistol that wasn’t reliable.  They conceal well in a proper holster.  I wouldn’t hesitate to carry it.

IWB or OWB? I'm 6'3 and 285 with a beer belly, I can't bring a firearm on work property.....I suppose it could be a truck gun, I wish I had never sold my Glock 21.

  9. I am interested in getting my concealed carry but here is the rub, the only handgun I own is a RIA 1911A1 in .45 (full size, weighs about 40 ounces unloaded)....It is barebones (no nite sights or rail) which limits it to home defense, I am looking at a compact 9mm that can perform both CCW and HD.  Would I be best served by sticking with a .45ACP or go to 9mm? I have quite a bit of .45 ammo or should I sell it and switch to 9mm? Thanks.
