Emergency Prepardness - Writing down my ideas
Ronald_55 replied to Ronald_55's topic in General Chat
Anyone got any interesting items you edc or keep in your bag that does not make it onto the internet full of bug out bag lists? -
I am not sure I could ever get used to having live grenades strapped to my chest........

There are few places with enough acreage and far enough from a major population center to keep everyone at bay. The few possible exceptions in the surrounding area would be something like the Smokeys or the National Forests. 5, 10, or 20 acres is not enough to isolate you. The problem there is that even if you get there first, you start from zero. Hauling enough supplies and materials there to get a decent start would be a miracle in itself. Then you are not very secure in a tent or RV while trying to build a fortification. You would need one or you might just have everything taken in an instant. Anyone that is a decent shot that can get within rifle range can drop you. Then just wait out anyone else there with you. Unfortunately, a fair amount of those that survive the chaos in the urban areas will not necessarily folks that have the best intentions. That makes them dangerous to begin with. Add in stress, sleep deprivation, and hunger next. That is a volatile mixture that even the most rural of us might have issues handling. Even if we could predict when and what type of $hitstorm would hit, few of us actually have the means to gather the supplies, a secure facility, and enough land to hold out in a long social collapse event like the grid being totally down indefinately. While that might be worst case but still survivable event , luckily the odds of a total worldwide grid crash are slim. I agree that nuclear war and a pandemic offer a very bleak chance. There are many more local or regional events that could easily happen. These are the ones we can plan and provision for. Food, water, guns, ammo, tools, and building supplies are good to stock. This way if your location is not compromised, you can hunker down and fortify somewhat if necessary. You know the lay of the land, who should be around and who should not be, and have more supplies than you could carry (hopefully) if you decided to run for the hills. Personally, if I had to pick an apocalypse, it would be something that drops the population by a huge percentage very quickly without destroying the infrastructure and supplies. This would give the survivors a fighting chance to make it in the long term. A slow withering of the population over weeks or months would destroy much of the supply store amid the ensuing chaos. My thoughts on the subject....

Better that the alternative if stepping in it.....

I think a cool idea on this would be to put 50 cal ammo cans on top at the back as drawer too. Do them the same way maybe 3 or 4 high.
-
You forget to mention that their gun selection will be cut to 10% if what it is now....I guess tgey will do away with the gun library.

I think the purchase finally went through and became official.

Reninds me of the guy that plays Punisher on Netflix. Lol
-
I'm thinking of unboxing my ammo but then vacuum seal using one of the kitchen vacuum sealer machines. Put it in single layers so I can stack inside the boxes. Just pull a pack to go to the range.
-
Do the cans come out individually? I looked at that, but stuff like shotgun shells or 30-06 just fills the small ones up so quick
-
I bet. I have a couple of these and they are all you want to carry when full. They are only 17.2" x 10.7" x 9.2”(H)
-
I have thought of buying some of the bigger ones like these. I just don't have the room at the moment.
-
The best option is if they say > "Glad to see you carrying your pistol...everywhere" Let's get back to this:

I really like that you can "lock" the drawers still like you do the cans. I really missed out, my Dad used to get all these huge shipping crates at work. I should have snagged a few. Not MilSurp, but would have made a great table.

We were 3 degrees here this morning. Schools called out. I actually wore a jacket. This would be a great day to work the forge Wish I had one....

I keep a basic soft sided one in the cars and tossed an extra in my range bag. I am trying to get a minute to supplement that kit with some larger pads and meds. Burn cream, pain reliever, triple antibiotic cream, and tweezers are things I make sure to keep. If things are really bad, I always have duct tape and a couple clean rags in my bag. Lol Are you saying you looked for a Knox box to buy or to see if the gate had one already?

I understand both sides, but there is very little additional work in transferring the second, third, fourth, etc beyond the first. I don't want them to transfer 100 items on one fee, but maybe limit it to 5 or something. When I stop in to do a transfer, I often end up buying something anyway. It may not be huge, but I usually find something in the used misc bin at least. From a personal point of view, my budget causes me to look hard at prices on everything I buy. Unfortunately, most of the LGS pricing is no where close to online pricing (as most of you know). Also, I have not hit on a shop yet that "clicks" with me. I have tried a few, but no luck. I am more apt to pay a slightly higher price to a place I feel good working with not that is just the most convenient FFL to transfer through.
-
I woukd love to do this too. Best I can find in NE TN is a discounted cost on the second and so on. By the time you pay the transfer the cheap lowers have doubled in price almost. Plus, I would like to pick up a few things off Gunbroker if I can avoid the same issue.

What guns, gear or training are in your crosshairs for 2018?
Ronald_55 replied to TGO David's topic in General Chat
Definately more range time. My swap in jobs cost me access to the impromptu range I could shoot at free anytime (even on my lunch break...I miss that). I need to keep working to make everything second nature and tighten up my groupings. Thinking of finally getting my cc permit. I have held off because the places I spend the most time at are "gun free" due to the nature of the business. I hate leaving my gun in the car most of the day. I have a real "need" for a .357 S&W. My Papaw carried a snub nose one on the force and I have always seen it as iconic. The EAA I have does great, but I still want lol. -
In the short term, even in a bad situation, some people will still trade for your silver. If it all went bad, I would start to quickly trade for things to supplement my stock. It will let me fill in spaces of things directly related to the exact situation. This is just a supplement to my main stock. Plus you know if the it is a werewolf apocalypse. You can always make bullets.

I bought some silver over the last while. Some is bullion, some is scrap silver coins. I figure it eats nothing and, as you said, if SHTF, then you have something to barter with. I have thought of trying to get a bunch of coins from the bank and sift through it to see if I find 90% silver coins. I think quarters and dimes before 1964 are. Some of the silver I bought was in grams. Each is about the size of your finger nail.

I think everyone needs a Luger, a Garand, a 1911, a Mauser, a Mosin Nagant, an old S&W revolver.... Well I guess if everyone had them no one would want them....

Stores that stock Black Powder in NE TN
Ronald_55 replied to Ronald_55's topic in Curio, Relics and Black Powder
Ok. Thanks. I will try to get up there. Strange that BP was not on their site. Too bad it says the #11 caps are out of stock in store. Maybe they will have them too. I used to order a bunch from Cabelas online because shipping it to TN avoids tax and they often have free shipping, even on a ton of ammo shipped st once.
