Need to remember to try and store all of these things in a way that mice and bugs can't get into it and / or are attracted to it.   That's why I think the vacuums sealing is important.  But don't forget to put into food storage containers, and maybe surround the whole thing with mothballs.

    Thoughts and opinions?

If storing in mylar you still need O2 absorbers and many people use Nitrogen gas to force the O2 and moisture too. You still need to store them in metal  cans or buckets.

I think on sale things like #10 cans from Mountain House are a decent deal because they are already sealed in (mostly) rodent proof cans. But things like you listed are hard to pay for like that unless you just need the shelf life.

Rice, dried beans, powdered milk, corn meal, yeast, and powdered eggs are a few more items to look at storing.

  2. Lets just say I have been preparing for trouble long enough that it has become tiring. The current snowstorm all the way up to full SHTF can be cause for worry.

I suggest to anyone that you set down and write out a plan. It helps to organize. Go over what you use and need. Look at storage space you have and whether you need to bug in or out. No good to have a thousand cans of soup if you have to bug out.  Or to have a case of sardines if no one eats them. Also, if you buy $1000 in comms but have no one to communicate with aside from random strangers.

There are lots of good resources out there. It can be kind of a rabbit hole. A shameless self plug though is a site I set up years ago. I have not posted to the blog in a while, but it explains my 'leveled' approach to preparing. I really need to post some new stuff when I get time but the basic ideas never change.

    http://leveledsurvival.com/

I set this up to help people new to the idea of preparing start out without feeling like they are drowning. Starting by trying to buy it all can overcome most finances and personal energy. Plus a generator and 500 gallons if fuel is no help if you have 5 cans of corn in the cabinet. Planning lets you add things in the most sensible (for you) order and not all at once. So you can shop for deals too. It also lets you see shortcomings. Like if you live in an apartment, you are going to have different limits than someone in a house in the country.

In my case one huge limiting factor is the lack of buy-in from the wife. She does the grocery shopping and refuses to 'stock up' on much. She told me I was being a hoarder when I tried to buy a second 30 something roll pack of TP. 😡 So I have to hidey hole some stuff away from prying eyes and pesky mice that seem to get into the unfinished part of the house every couple years.

Schools out tomorrow. Surely one of them has a kid wanting to earn a little extra video game money

Wife told our youngest that she missed him. He replied "Cause I'm not there to shovel snow?" Yep that is what she meant. lol

  4. Last I looked we might have 3.

Probably gonna fire up the gas logs in the basement when we hit single digits. Turn it up past a couple clicks and you'll start to sweat. Helps keep the heat pump from running all the time and helps warm up the pipes since there is only one output down there. Only good thing previous owner did.

  5. Snowing here again in the Tricities. It melted a bit mid day, so the ice is gonna be great. Plus it will have fresh snow on top.

It's different than what you'd expect and i wouldn't hurt my feelings if it's not you thing. The have a very calming effect on me. The live shows are fantastic.

I love it though it is no where close to the super heavy stuff I listen to normally. I half expected a longship to sail out when the song started.

Basically the wife and kids just told me to replace My Samsung S8 Plus with a new phone. Nothing much exciting around here. lol We will see if I do. Spring tuition for both college kids was due last week. That might be enough spending for now.

“Leave The World Behind “ on Netflix. It seems very relevant to our world today and also has a nod towards prepping.

I watched this and while it was ok, it just seemed like a long trailer for the real movie. I don't mind the disjointed lack of info as that would be realistic. The deer bothered me. It did not seem like it connected to the rest of the story.

  8. Working on a project and looking for Sig P226 9mm frame and slide parts. Stock or aftermarket is perfectly fine. Thought someone might have a bag of them sitting around to help me avoid ordering them 1 at a time.

PM me if you have anything. I am in NE TN, but obviously shipping parts should not be an issue.

Yeah that is by design. I have a system for rebates, etc that I follow every single time. I setup reminders of when they are due and then pester companies if I've not received it. I hate the whole process but I've not missed one yet.

I used to do tons of rebates on computer stuff on Black Friday. I had a piece of software to store all the info and images. It created a calendar to go by. Wish I still had it. It was freeware long ago. I think I missed out on 1 rebate out of dozens. I still kick myself about that $5. I have also put 75 cents of gas in my car to empty a rebate card. lol

  10. Well take a close look at some of the "Rebates". Some , like one Ruger one, are actually $100 to spend in their online merch store.

Another reason they like rebates is that anyone that forgets to send it in or can be disqualified is just money in the bank. In the past rebate processing services actually got bonuses for refusing a large percentage.
