Confused about powder grains
Jamie Jackson replied to charlessummers's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
This is a good point. I generally use Berry's Bullets for my Glock's...9mm. I e-mailed Berry's to get their recommendations as to Overall Length for their bullets. Most companies have this data and are more than willing to provide it to you. A rule of thumb is to take the "max load" and reduce by 10% as a starting point...at least that's worked for me when I only had "max" load data available. Like others have said, find the bullet, powder, OAL combination that works best in your gun. A good manual or two, well read, is your best friend. btw: Berry's 9mm 124 RN is 1.160, the 124 FP is 1.060, and the 147 is 1.160. -
Is a mattress cover or concealment?
Jamie Jackson replied to Will Carry's topic in Training Discussions
Good point, and I'm sure you're right... although you haven't seen all the crap stuffed into our fridge. :stunned: -
As best I can tell, New Market is about an hours drive from Oak Ridge. Like BrasilNuts linked, ORSA is a great place to shoot IDPA Matches. We have one on Saturday the 2nd of Feb. Hope you can make it. Great folks!
-
Several of us jumped on this from our little shooting circle. It's a rare find these days. But as fast as things are selling, I wouldn't wait too long to order.

Clinton is a good community my Friend. And you'll have great access to several places to hike, camp, and of course shoot. I work just over in Oak Ridge. I'm sure some good Clinton folks will chime in.

Is a mattress cover or concealment?
Jamie Jackson replied to Will Carry's topic in Training Discussions
^^ This. Quite a few years ago we took some car doors (driver's side and passenger's side) and tested several SD rounds from handguns on them. With the window rolled down (inside the door), most of the SD rounds would not penetrate through and through. After the glass was shattered and out of the way, the majority of the 9mm and 45 acp rounds, including 230 gr FMJ 45's fully penetrated. The A-pillars in most autos (that we tested) do a reasonable job of stopping rounds. We did the same with 2x4 door frames...most rounds penetrated fairly easily...enough so I wouldn't count on them as "cover". There isn't a lot in your average home that works well for actual cover...refrigerator...large gun safe ... I personally wouldn't count on a mattress though. :2cents: -
You're right David. You're Right. Even if they get a percentage of this through Congress, we loose big time. I personally see very little difference between the two parties, and face it, the Republicans haven't exactly demonstrated much backbone as of late. I Pray that we will see a resurgence of States Rights and State Sovereignty as our founders intended. At least Texas and Wyoming are trying to move that direction. I'll continue to exhaust all avenues legally available to me, lobby my elected officials and support those that support our Constitution. But honestly, I'm worried. We can't afford to lose any momentum in this fight. The Old Chinese curse goes something like "May you live in interesting times"...well, we are certainly living in interesting times.

Thank you David. Absolutely, I read it. I too am unsure if it is his proposal, or the list of EO's he's initiating. It SUCKS either way. I hope it's as Leroy posted. I'm writing to, talking to, e-mailing anyone who will listen...I'm a member of NRA, GOA, and OathKeepers.. and donate to the ILA. I plan to keep doing what I'm doing... I'm open to suggestions...it's gonna be a long battle.

Look at the AR shortage and compare
Jamie Jackson replied to vontar's topic in Survival and Preparedness
Good point vontar. All it takes is a minor weather event to empty the store shelves of food...a Real SHTF scenario? If you aren't prepared, at least to some degree = serious trouble. It's easy to get distracted...we are a gun-centric group after all. Of equal importance to Security (guns & gear) are - Shelter- Energy- Food- Water and Medical. Thanks for the reminder. -
A buddy of mine recently received 6 of the KCI G 19 mags from them. It took several weeks...and he sweated it the whole time. I have received an order from them once before, in '08. It was a really good deal on Glock factory mags...but I wasn't sure it would happen until it actually happened. Another friend waited a long time to get credited for an order that apparently never shipped...again, it was a few years back... They have a well earned rep for being hit & miss.

Good SHTF Survival Fiction Books
Jamie Jackson replied to plank white's topic in Survival and Preparedness
Just a quick comment about “Collision Course†by David Crawford. It is much more akin to his short stories and therefore very unlike "Light's Out". But an interesting read about the differing personalities and morality of individuals within the prepping community. That being said I liked "Light's Out" much better. :2cents: Also, I haven't read "By force of Patriots" by Cameron Ready. But a friend highly recommended it. So it is definitely on my list. -
Good SHTF Survival Fiction Books
Jamie Jackson replied to plank white's topic in Survival and Preparedness
Absolutely. I own and read all of the books I've listed above. The Road is excellent, very dark...but I've read all of Cormac McCarthy's book and he is a dark SOB, rambles like hell, but I like his work. There is no good or bad with him...there simply "is". :2cents: -
Good SHTF Survival Fiction Books
Jamie Jackson replied to plank white's topic in Survival and Preparedness
No hijacking intended, but here's a few Gun-centric books I own and would recommend: Firearms & Self Defense: “Surgical Speed Shooting†by Andy Stanford “Terror at Beslan†by John Giduck. “In the Gravest Extreme: The Role of the Firearm in Personal Protection†by Massad F. Ayoob. “Guns, Bullets, and Gunfights: Lessons and Tales from a Modern Day Gunfighter†by Jim Cirllo. “Kill or Get Killed†by Col. Rex Applegate “No Second Place Winner†by Bill Jordan. “To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth†by Col. Jeff Cooper, USMC (retired). “Another Country†by Col. Jeff Cooper, USMC (retired). “Principles of Personal Defense†by Col. Jeff Cooper. “The Art of War†by Sun Tzu “The Book of the Five Rings (Bushido – The Way of the Warrior) by Miyamoto Musashi “A Rifleman Went to War†by H.W. McBride -

Ain't nuthin' wrong with being a bit crazy...keeps you from going insane. :pleased: Welcome aboard Good Sir. There's great folks more than willing to share their expertise and experiences here... and opinions...

Welcome aboard William, and Thank you for your service to our Nation. Knoxville is a good town and for the most part "gun centric"...lots of gun folks, shooters, and some decent places to shoot. Here's a link or two related to the primary range where I and several area members of TGO shoot and compete. http://orsaonline.org/ http://orsaap.com/ Let us know when you're settled in and we'll do some shooting.

Another option is to go to the GOA (Gun Owners of America) site: http://gunowners.org/ and sign up for their e-mail alerts...red rectangle to the right side of page. Along with their e-mail alerts, you be able to set an an e-mail link to your Congressmen and Senators. I've sent quite a few this way and have received direct replies. I use the links posted above as well and try to keep the pressure on 'em. We all need to let them know we're here, we vote, and we've had enough loss of Liberty. :2cents:

An unlikely Long Term Food Storage resource
Jamie Jackson replied to Jamie Jackson's topic in Survival and Preparedness
LOL. I hear ya Lester. Some of the LTS foods are much better than others. I appreciate companies, like Wise foods, that offered samples initially when they first came out. And also companies that produce the smaller cans, so a person can actually afford to try out the food they are storing. An example: "My Choice" by Emergency Essentials. Gotta get to work... -
I've picked up 400 rounds of 7.62x39 Tula at Turkey Creek Walmart (Knoxville) over the past 3 weeks. It was $4.97 per box. It's a hit and miss, but they seem to still be getting ammo fairly regularly. I didn't see .223 the last trip.

I don't know...the more forbidden the fruit, the greater the desire...at least in certain circumstances. IIRC there have, for a number of years, been junket tours for folks from other countries with totalitarian gun bans to the U.S., primarily for the purpose of shooting and handling those forbidden fruits. God Help Us, I pray we never come to that. But wish you the best in getting your business up and going.

LOL, Great points Sir. While being an old fart, such as I am, and an old Corpsman, I never did the "cool guy" stuff while on Active Duty...then, like now, I was "working for a living"... I don't own any cool guy gear and don't feel my life is incomplete. I do carry daily, and have for a mighty long time. I compete with my carry gear, I practice and train with my EDC gear, and dress in the same snazzy fashion each and every day...jeans and T-Shirt with the occasional sweat shirt. I am not "tacti-cool". The thing that I admire about instructors I've had in the past, like Givens, Farnam, and SouthNarc, is that they train the average joe to do what is necessary within the confines of reality. I don't begrudge anyone going to "gun camp". Heck, I bet it's fun...albeit expensive. I'll just keep trudging along. But I sure would like to train with this guy!

An unlikely Long Term Food Storage resource
Jamie Jackson replied to Jamie Jackson's topic in Survival and Preparedness
Lester; It sounds like to have a very good setup. Rotation, along with continual additions is what we do as well. Our setup is very similar to yours. We have an upstairs pantry with multiple shelves. and have several buckets with the gamma seal lids that hold various rice, legumes, flour, sugar, etc. along it's floor/wall under the shelves. Our basement pantry has multiple shelving units for our intermediate-storage items...home canned foods, store bought canned goods, toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning products etc. and a couple ( :ugh: ) of 5 gallon buckets of Mylar/o2 absorber LTS foods. And of course a few cases of LDS "starter kits". I pressure canned 7 quarts and 8 pints of boneless turkey from one of our freezers yesterday (3 turkeys we bought on sale back over Thanksgiving)...that's why I'm so long in replying. We always try an consider variety for our storage and our diets. That's one of the main reason we purchase freeze dried fruits. They aren't my first choice in fruits, but they'll help with the monotony of each the same thing daily...food fatigue can be a serious issue, as you brought up. We also store various freeze dried goods and some MRE's...they all have their place in the overall scheme of things. And it's not for just an "End of the world" scenario. Over the past few years, related to a protracted family illness, we've had to "shop" in our pantry for a couple of months because money got really tight. I feel/felt very Blessed that we had the storage in place. I hadn't heard of Perma Pak before...so you piqued my interest. Is this it? Apparently a company called the food guys are a distributor for Perma Pak. Being a "gun guy" I too have focused on that aspect of my preps over the past few months. I can't do much about the firearm product insanity at the moment...so I'm trying to refocus my energies towards other aspects of my preps...like my food storage....and you know what? It won't be too long from now and I'll be starting seeds for the garden. There's always something to do... :pleased:
