  1. I think you can go ahead and say that the education system as a whole is not what it once was.  If you can find them, read some textbooks from the 40's and 50's and compare to today's textbooks.  I think in general you will find today's higher level high school books are the 40's and 50's elementary textbooks.   I would say that it is a combination of things like need the kids to score better so my evaluation is good and we don't want to hurt their self-esteem by allowing them to score low grades as to why the books have been dumbed down.   That being said, I know I'm not an English genius but I do try to use correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation where I can.
  2. I like that. Care to share how you did that?
  3.   Yeah, pretty easy to guess eh?  There is a 100 watt high pressure sodium street light about 100 yards from the barn so that is where the extra light on the barn comes from.  Otherwise, it was totally dark.  I shot some others on the other side of the house of the hills across the valley and was amazed that it almost appeared daylight.
  4. Can you guess what I did here?
  5. I would also echo reading through Ken Rockwell's site. He's a professional who writes reviews for all kinds of stuff, new and old. He also takes the time to explain some of the terms so that someone who doesn't know about photography can learn. For me, I bought a Nikon D40X a few years back and one of the best things I ever did was take it off "Auto" and put it on manual and start manipulating all the settings. In the old days, you would have to burn up alot of film and developing to learn what the settings do. Now, you just look at it on the screen and delete what you don't want. One of my wants in photography was to be able to get a decent moon picture. I had occasion when I was on vacation earlier this year in Cocoa Beach that the moon was full and rose over the ocean directly out from the balcony I was on. Unfortunately, I didn't have my tripod or my remote shutter activator with me so I had to carefully prop up on a table and be as still as I could while pressing the button. I won't bore everybody with all the shots but will show a couple. This is what I was talking about earlier. In the two moon shots, the only difference was the apperature opening setting. In the old days, I would have shot up who knows how much in film to figure out which setting was the best and now all you have to do is shoot, observe, adjust, reshoot. P.S. I'm not an expert at this by any means. Some of the guys on this forum are leaps and bounds better than me.
  6. The smart alec in me made me do this and I can't stop it right now.......   http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Thompson+Station%2C+TN
  7. There is another benefit to using red over white in that when you switch it off, your night vision isn't blown as much as it would be using white.
  8. In the search for something to get my brother for Christmas that he would actually like, I had the thought of getting him some nice thick big porterhouse steaks. I have never mail ordered steaks before so I thought I would get some opinions on where to get them from. Whosoever has had mail order steaks please come forth and provide your opinions/recommendations.
  9. You did the right thing getting the word out.  Better safe and look silly than the other way....   Hope everybody's nerves settle down soon.
  10. While we're at it, all you guys educate everybody else that the on ramp to the interstate is called the "acceleration lane" whereby you accelerate to speed and merge in.  You do not putt down the ramp at 35 mph and stop at the end and look at everybody else as if they are the moron.
  11. Retracted..... as I replied to someone who I thought was the OP and they weren't.
  12. If you have any friends that are A/C guys, maybe you could get them to look at it and tell you what is wrong with it.  They are repairable to a point.  If it just ran low on gas, it could be repumped, leak found/sealed, and it would be good as new.  If the compressor is gone, yeah, it's toast.
  13. Saw a couple of 1000 rd. 5.56 boxes last night for $447.00 in the WM I was in.  I'd never seen that before.
  14. I finally just wore out a set of Michelin LTX/MS tires on my 02 F250 7.3 Diesel Crew cab and got a little over 130K out of them, and I had some bad ball joints for a little of the time until I could get them changed.  Went to Maggart Tire in Cookeville and got another set of them and they were the cheapest out of all the places I checked but I didn't check Discount Tire.  Maggart Tire is one of those old family tire store places.
  15. 1962 Willys CJ-5.  Currently have alot of air in between most of the parts in the basement.
  16. If you haven't cut all the ones down you want cut, you might look into getting a logger out there.  You might have some trees that could bring you some good money.
  17. When Hank was looking at all the different forms, I kept thinking he would think of using the IRS on Walt.
  18. On one hand, I can see being sort of bent (at myself mainly) about 8 bucks for a hole in cardboard.  On the other hand, I'd consider myself lucky that all I had to pay was 8 bucks a hole.  I'd come out of there thinking I was super lucky and didn't hit something way more expensive.  I've never shot inside before because I can go outside in my yard and shoot all I want so I would look at it this way if I did go somewhere to shoot.  I was brought up by my parents to know that it's their house and while your there, you follow their rules and if you break something, you have the obligation to make it right, accident or not.
  19. Kilgore's Restaurant - Hwy 70 west side of Smithville, Great home cooking.  Personally, I can't get enough of the fried pork chops.   White Possum - West of the square on W. Walnut St. in Smithville, They have a flat iron steak marinated in moonshine that's almost tender enough to cut with the fork.   Sundance Restaurant - East of the square on Main St. in Smithville.  More good home cooking.  My wife would kill for the Jewish Brownies there.   Sunset Restaurant - Hwy 231 between I-40 and the square in Lebanon.  Old school home cooking.  Remember those restaurants that would hit you with the glass of ice water when you first sat down at the table?  Here is one of those.
  20. Maybe doing the "Blue Thunder" thing and hovering in whisper mode over the lady's house doing nude yoga with the window drapes open, or hoping to find something similar....
  21. Put up some good fencing and get 4 or 5 goats and never feed them.  My neighbor across the street has lived here for 5 years and to this day does not own a lawn mower or weed eater.  Plus, if you do it right, you could make a little pocket change selling said goats and starting with a fresh fleet now and again.
  22.         More likely that he will be fined, tarred and feathered, etc. for wanting to cut down trees.  The carbon foot print that would create is probably quite enormous and the powers that be can't have that..... :tinfoil:  :panic:
  23. This reminds me of the three word thread, DON'T LOOK THAT UP AND GET THAT GOING AGAIN!!!!
