Has anyone seen a "living" armadillo in Tennessee?
Handsome Rob replied to K191145's topic in General Chat
Damn good eating, if you can be bothered to fool with 'em. Very much like tender, slightly stringy pork. Delicious in a well made molè. -
Hornady Says “We Change Everything – 10/27/15”
Handsome Rob replied to BigK's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
You sir, have won the internets. -
In other news....apparently drinking water can kill you. "Mary Parks, Nashville resident, was found dead in her home last night. Mary was a long-time advocate of the health benefits of drinking fresh spring water daily. She drank at least a half pint of mountain spring water every day of her 97 years. Medical examiner's are blaming long term over hydration for her unfortunate & untimely death. Later, on MSNBC....."

Does it come with the AICS bottom metal? By swap do you mean someone wants to trade you, or you want to buy a replacement? If it's a swap & comes with the bottom metal....take his frikkin' arm off!

It's a cinch to do yourself. You can get 95% of the tissue off the skull with a scalpel & a lot of the brain out with a wire hook. Once you've got everything possible toss it in a pot big enough to cover the entire skull but make sure the antlers stay out of the liquid. Use 1 cup of borax to 3 gallons of water. Boil for an hour & check it. Any loose tissue will come away easily with a scrubbing brush. Boil for longer if necessary. Let it air dry for at least a week & then you're ready for peroxide.

As you know, The wind is always bad out west! Personally I'd be looking for a good .204 or .22-250 I know that either of the 17s will work, but I think you might get frustrated trying to dope the wind for every shot.

Sorry, I was typing at the same time! Yeah, this is a national GIS database, separated state by state.
-
Just keep zooming until you find the property, click on it & a box pops up, click on the thingy in the box & all the owners details show up for you!

Ever drive around, see a field full of deer & think: "I wonder who I have to talk to to get permission to hunt that?" Well, here you go. It's a little awkward to navigate & you really have to be sure of the property you're looking for, but it lists the landowner of ever parcel of private property in the State. Anything that doesn't have a name (as best as I can tell) is TWRA, TVA or WMA. :D http://tnmap.tn.gov/mobile/assessment/#mapPage

Yep. You CAN shoot 7.62 Nato in a .308 You SHOULDN'T shoot .308 in a 7.62 Nato.
-
Might I suggest simplifying your options? .308 Good to 1000+ yds, capable of being loaded up for buffalo & down for foxes. Does everything you'll ever need efficiently, cheaply & easily. Remington 700adl or Savage Hog Hunter. Both blind magazine, both under $500, both supremely accurate, both readily available. Nikon, Vortex, Leupold scope. 3-9x40. More than enough glass for your needs. $200 will get you very good glass from all 3 manufacturers. K.I.S.S. ;)

It's certainly leaner than farm-raised pork, but it's a lot tastier! Raising pigs for the table is about as easy as any livestock can get, but you need good fences. Very good fences. Buried at least 3' deep & 4' tall. There isn't much a determined & motivated pig can't escape from. Also, they're not easy to slaughter. Mostly because in the time it takes to grow them from seed bacon to healthy eating weight, you'll bond with them. They have very individual & obvious personalities & it's very hard not to fall in love with the damn things.

Man, it's been rough hunting up this this past week. I didn't draw the area I wanted & am familiar with, but the one next to it. The weather had been wet, but unseasonably warm this year & the migration is still very sporadic. I've been glassing my eyes out trying to find any antelope! Of course in the unit I wanted, the damn things are everywhere.... I managed to connect yesterday late in the afternoon with a group of 8 & selected the biggest of the bunch. Touched off the 6.5 at (I'm guessing) a hair under 300yds & lost her in the recoil. I honestly thought I'd missed & she'd bounded away. Turns out I hit her perfectly in the mid-shoulder & dropped her on the spot. I have to report, the 140gn Berger VLD did an amazing job. Hardly any meat loss, no exit & her insides were soup. I was skeptical of a bullet that advertises the fact that it penetrates a couple of inches & then sheds it's jacket, fully fragmenting the core. That just sounded counter intuitive to me, but dang! This thing is devastating!

Man, hog hunting in TN is rough. They're there, but the mountain hogs we have are super elusive. Being largely nocturnal & constantly travelling makes sighting one in the woods a hell of a challenge. Finding sign is great, but it only tells you where they've been. His are very different from deer in that they don't have a 'territory' as such. They're nomadic & go where the food is. In large populations, they'll tend to stay near a solid, reliable food source but in the hills & hollers they'll just move & feed, move & feed.
-
It's a blast! Lots of driving & glassing. Completely different from hunting in TN. It helps to be totally confident out to 500yds+ (I'm not...) because these rascals have eyesight like you wouldn't believe!

My Fusil in a few weeks... Then my 6.5 I think...

Last one I killed fell to 62gn from a .223 With any round, sub 2500fps, I'd be looking for a double lung shot & nothing else. Fast & light, go for the neck. Piggy's don't stand up well to any kind of hydrostatic shock near the spine.

Found this today, whilst antelope hunting up in Wyoming. Perfect, un-chewed, unbroken 6 point.

Nossir. I'm shooting Berger Hybrids. I'm not sure cast would stand up to 3150fps!
-
Where everything goes just right! I finally figured out why my 1885 didn't like cast boolits. The expander plug in my die was too small & was compressing the less bullet in the case to the point it wouldn't obturate to bore size. Half an hour if test loading got me 22 consecutive hits on a 24" tall by 12" wide plate at 600yds. I also shot my first deliberate group at 1000yds with my 6.5x55. The wind was tough to read, but I managed an 8" 3 shot group. Not world being, but good enough that I'm still grinning!

Basically, if you wouldn't want it on your $300 truck gun, it'll be fine on an airgun.
