Should I buy a press kit or individual pieces?
mikegideon replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
You won't be sorry for buying that press. You can buy extra plates and storage boxes so you can leave your dies installed and set up. Then, a caliber change is just swapping the plate and resetting the power charge. -

I think they have perfected a few new things since the 80's. I really can't justify going to a progressive, as fast as the 4 hole turret is. If you don't get bullet setback, there's probably no need to use the FCD. Also, some 45's (only pistol I reload so far) will go into the case a little crooked. The sizing ring in the FCD helps straighten them out. -

Yours is the aluminum base. The Classic has a cast iron base. Kinda goes along with their single stage designs. I don't know if they ever made a 3 hole version of the classic. You really need four holes if your are going to do everything, including powder charge, on the press. The autodisk pro powder drop really speeds things up. -
Always carry with one in the pipe.

Nothing worse than having somebody beat the crap out of you with your own gun. -

Got everything except gay stuff. And I gotta admit, a banjo player dressing like Taylor Swift is pretty friggin' gay. :) -

A friend of mine bought the cheaper 4 holer and it worked ok. It's just not as hefty. I don't think it's as tall either. I can vouch for the classic. I have run way over 1000 rounds thru it. -

I would lean heavily toward Lee on a turret because theirs auto indexes. Just be aware that they make two. This is the good 'un. http://leeprecision.com/4-hole-classic-turret-press.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDfOO2j0zYI -
St Louis has had some pretty ugly slums since I was a kid. Not saying our society isn't in the crapper. Just saying that it's the reason we left that area in the late 60's. There are also some great areas. i enjoyed living there in the late 80's thru early 90's. Still have a bunch of friends there.

Nope. In the nutz with a slingshot. He obviously had a serious pair.

The classic cast is a GREAT press. I have one of those too. I don't have enough left in me to wear that one out. -

The problem is that the Lee presses are great, but some of the other kit parts are WAY outclassed by the RCBS stuff. For example, the Lee powder measure is crap compared to the Uniflow. I own both. Same with the scale, and the hand primer. -

Depends on what you're doing. If you're loading hunting ammo, there's nothing wrong with hand powered brass prep. It you're loading a few thousand rounds for AR blasting, you probably want to ditch the crank-up stuff. I HATE brass prep, and found a good excuse to minimize the hassle. -

Something like that is what got Caster the nickname of Tender Knuckles :). He was making 2000 rounds of Blackout brass out of 223. He wound up with this.. http://www.littlecrowgunworks.com/wft.html Needless to say, I got thru it with a lot fewer injuries than he did :) -

It screws into the end of the lathe. I bought the trimmer when I was making 300 blackout brass. The Giraud is a faster trimmer, but this one is OK with me. I have 22 and 30 cal heads. One step trims, chamfers, and deburs. -
Good stuff in this post. I'll be one of the first ones to call 9mm a sissy gun on here, but only because it's like playing with a laser pen in a room full of cats :). Fact is, I have owned a high cap 9 since the 70's, and for years it was my only caliber. I have gravitated toward my 45's, but mainly just because I can. I have 1000 rounds of 9mm showing up today, and am going to do some serious comparison between my G19 and my G30S. The 45 is a handful, and does hold a lot fewer rounds. Anyway, that's where I am with things. In the nearly 40 years I have been messing with handguns, I have had to discharge 1 round. That was to turn an angry dog around.

Hard to argue with real world experience. I use multiple 223 rifles, so no way I would try just neck sizing. I have a bushing neck sizer for 223, but it's not for blaster ammo. -

You really really want the 9mm crimp die. It does a resizing pass as well. -

Rifle and pistol are different. You need an expander die for pistol. -
Yep. They was gonna be college football players until they got on the pipe.

The Lee Classic Cast is a heavy press. I can't see it wearing out much faster than a Rock Chucker. The good news... you can't move fast enough on a single stage to wear one out anyway.
