  1.     There's so many options....   It's best to read some online comparisons then go get touchy-feely in a store somewhere to pick out something you like.    We hike too and I've gone on several motorcycle trips with my old Canon Powershot in my pocket.  It's been dropped a number of times, gotten wet a few times, and is generally on the verge of falling apart, but it still takes good pictures.
  2.     A fairly nomal point-shoot type camera will do all you need.  Most have very good macro (close-up) capability with enough optical zoom (4x minimum) to be useful when things aren't quite so close.  Personally, I'm a Canon guy so that's what I look for.  But most all the big names make good cameras in that range... Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, etc...   What physical size you do want?  Some true pocket cameras can take excellent pictures.  If you want more zoom, you'll end up with something that's not really pocket-able but still smaller than a DSLR.     http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1000470-REG/canon_8406b001_powershot_g16_digital_camera.html   Big zoom:  http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1080919-REG/canon_9543b001_powershot_sx60_hs_digital.html   Small-ish: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1110377-REG/canon_0109c001_powershot_sx710_hs_digital.html

    Helmet Law

Indeed.    I'd be happy to hear from someone more informed on the topic that I am.     Regarding insurance... I'd be willing to sign a waiver that would release my insurance company of responsibility should I be injured while riding a motorcycle on public roads while not wearing a helmet.
  5.   Wow.  I remember when 1600 was grainy.

    Helmet Law

Sounds about perfect to me.  That way they're alive and conscious through the horror that is road rash recovery.      I agree that it should be a choice for adults.    On the car topic... I do question whether cars would be as safe (and expensive) as they currently are without all the regulations.  My guess is no.
  7.     I don't have the time or inclination to mess with making one myself.  Doesn't look too hard, but it's a lot easier for me to just call George and say ... "make me a sheath for this."  :)   I forget what I paid for the last one, but it was a friendly price.
  8.     I also like the flexibility of the kydex sheaths (especially being left handed), but prefer the feel of leather.  If they offered kydex in a dark brown instead of black, I'd jump.    I don't recall exactly how I came across the deal.  Someone posted a different Boker Magnum knife so I googled it and found this.  I saw it listed on several other sites for $50- $60 (with good reviews) so I was pleasantly surprised to find the OEM offering it for much less. :)
  9. I like the look of the AK.  How did you get it to stand up like that?
  10. Call back. It's hard to go wrong for the price. Thanks. If I might inquire from the expert, how might I go about adding some jimping? Is there a special tool of some sort or just a file?
  11. Since you've already got a 19, get the 30. The subcompacts are awful.
  12. With all this fixed blade knife goodness going on here, I ran across what I think is quite a deal. I like the idea of having a modest sized fixed blade I can carry. I'm also somewhat traditional and like wood scales and leather sheaths. Plus I'm cheap. ;) Enter the Boker Magnum Survival.... http://www.boker.de/us/fixed-blade-knife/boker/tactical-knife/02SC310.html $26 to my door. Yep, really. I'm no knife expert, but I fiddled around with it over the weekend. I don't really consider it a true "survival knife", but its a perfectly serviceable camp/utility knife. It was reasonably sharp out of the box, just barely shaving sharp. I assume that'll be the norm since it's a 440 stainless blade as opposed to something like 1095. Probably a better choice for this purpose anyway... less concern for chipping it or corrosion. The notch is listed for cutting cord, rope, etc. I didn't have any rope laying around that I wanted to make shorter so I can't say how well it works for that. I did do a good job shaving little knots off the stick I was whittling on. It's got a little ridge on the spine to act as a thumb stop, but I think it could use a little jimping for a more tactile feel. I may have a go at that myself at some point. The wrong handed sheath is a bit of an expected bummer (I'm left handed), but carrying it on my left side seemed to work fine. For the price, I'm more than satisfied. :)
  13. Indeed. Yes, I own this t-shirt. ;)
  14.     Yep.  Salvage what can be recycled and burn the rest.  Just don't burn anything important.
  15. A friend's spit bottle....  yeah, don't ask.   :ugh:           Indeed.  Had a bad night followed by an even worse day (sweating in the sun while wearing a suit) after being given a bottle of that crap.  *body shiver*    I also had a bad experience with vodka.  Took years before I could even handle it as a mixer.  The smell alone would turn my stomach.
  16.     I don't like painting either.  I've gotta do all my outside trim this year. :yuck:
  17.     I just use the foam Howard Leight type earplugs... they're free at work.  I find the constant drone of wind noise very fatiguing and headache inducing.  I feel like I can hear the important stuff better with earplugs, they drop the background noise to the point that other things are more clear.   I don't understand how people with really loud bikes stand it.
  18.     That's a good answer as far as I'm concerned.  I like cayenne.  "Buffalo" sauce is vile.
  19.     Yep.   Same reason a 10lb dumbell is easier to carry than an 8lb 2x4.  It's called moment of inertia if you want to be nerdy about it.
  20. Earplugs.    Two halves....   1.  I don't want to be half deaf like my Dad. 2. Half the point of riding is so I don't have to talk to anyone.
  21. I'm old fashioned.  Burn them to a CD and send/take it to her.
  22. At some point I'm gonna have to try this stuff.    What kind of heat is it?  Like Hooters wing heat, jalapeno heat, habanero heat, or.... ?
  23. What's wrong with the one that's in it?  Some shops will refurbish one for a modest cost.  They replace the end caps and dunk it in the acid tank to remove the scale.
