Yep. We had to get a new couch about a year ago. Furniture stores seem to do most of their business with these high rent interior design groups who decorate the McMansions popping up everywhere. I'm sure those designers are getting a big price cut based on the volume they move.

Security doesn't have to mean armed guards. Most of these shooting have started with the perp just walking in. No perimeter, no controlled entry, no fancy scanners, nothing but doors that should have been locked. I understand that schools shouldn't look like prisons, but most newer schools have very similar architecture. Agreed. Both my kids had great interaction with the SRO's in their elementary school. My youngest walked away wanting to be a cop. The problem is the perception within the department. The SRO job was viewed negatively by other cops. You're not considered a "real cop" when you're policing 9 yr olds all day. Someone had to be assigned, no one would volunteer. Which is why they change person regularly.

Yesterday I learned one of my aunts used to be neighbors with the shooter's family. Her kids (my cousins) used play with their kids. They haven't spoken in many years but she thought highly of them. It's been a tough week.

We do have a better answer, but its not quick, easy, or clean. It means dealing with messy, ugly, difficult people, one at a time. It means compromise. There is no magic pill for this. It can't be solved behind a keyboard. Society's moral compass has been spinning for decades. There will be no resolution until we find a direction and work toward it together.

Everything except the rifle can be done most anywhere. With the rifle will be your problem. Best I can think of is a WMA with a valid hunting license during hunting season.

Orion - don't know. It was scored by computer and it had issues. They had to re-score all the air rifle targets because there we so many protests/errors. Another parent tried to explain to me how the scoring works (I'm familiar with computer vision based inspection systems) and there were several parts that don't make sense to me. Both my boys started with BB, inexpensive way to see if they like it. My older one will have to do air rifle if he continues next year. I don't know any of the results. The competition was an hour behind schedule and with a 3.5hr drive home, I wasn't going to sit around even longer while they figured out the scores. I think breath control and being really smooth on the trigger are his biggest areas for improvement. He hit the black pretty easily when he did that well. Need to make the bad shots less bad. Focus, concentration, patience, perseverance, .... all the things I want them to learn.

Not me, but my older boy.... We drove over for a 4-H BB and air rifle competition at the Rutherford County Ag Center Saturday. It was his first competition. He was nervous and it showed in his first round but he settled in reasonably. I think he learned a bit we can apply at Bend of the River next weekend. I learned a couple things as well. Murfreesboro traffic is no joke. Holy smokes! I think I could've walked to lunch faster. We drove back through the country a bit across 96 and 70. Really pretty farm country out there.

I've never seen cornbread rise that much. I guess both self-rising flour and cornmeal will do that. And "Free State of Jones" is a good movie.

People are messy, complicated, difficult, and panicy in groups. Why do we have all these fancy (and expensive) electronic nannies in vehicles today? ABS, stability control, auto-brake, etc... Because it's easier to program a computer than to train a person.

Yes. Circumstances should not be an excuse for a fundamental lack of moral character, but it has permeated our society. On a much lesser scale, I see it at work. One of the big dogs is not a nice person. He treats most of his employees quite poorly... fear and intimidation are his primary tools. But after a few years, a lot of people have normalized this poor behavior. They know and accept that they're going to get cussed out or threatened. They just shrug it off. It creates undue stress which gets passed on to others and before long that snowball rolling downhill has become an avalanche.

A raised ranch with a basement is ideal. That's what I wanted but I couldn't find one that didn't have drainage/moisture issues from not being built properly. I've not heard of burst pex, but I know several people who've had mold and water damage from leaky fittings.

I'm not sure what you mean by wrapping the pipes every winter? That's a one and done thing. I did mine 15 years ago. Frozen pipes are really only a concern if you lose power/heat. Opening or closing the vents takes 2 minutes. Frozen pipes are also possible with a slab if they're run in exterior walls. Yes, leaks in a slab require a jack hammer. Leaks in a crawlspace may rot the subfloor, but slab floors have a layer of insulation under the floor too.

It had changed back to normal since this morning but I picked dark normal and it's working fine now. Mobile version.

Being but a humble engineer, I don't pretend to understand all this financial stuff. Largely I think it's just a bunch crap some bean counters made up to justify their existence and hide from doing any tangible work. Business leaders who suck at their jobs should be allowed to fail and it should be painful. Innocent people also get hurt along the way, which is unfortunate. But people don't learn anything when they get bailed out. That snarky and cynical opinion aside, I'm always reminded of this scene from Sneakers when things like this happen....
