  1.   Yep.  They fly over my house all the time.    And I doubt that bird was hovering at high altitude.  He was likely moving, just so slowly that it appeared to be hovering from 1/2 mile away.
  2. This is the case study for how defending yourself can go horribly wrong even if you're found innocent.
  3. I was born in SC near Charleston.  I got into a fire ant mound when I was little and they ate me up big time.  Thankfully I'm not allergic as that would've been really ugly.
  4. If there's a Cycle Gear near you, they have some good stuff that you can try on.  Otherwise, a big bike dealership should have some stuff to try and get an idea of what size you need.    Perforated leather with a removeable windproof liner is the best option.  Generally, you get what you pay for.  Cheap leathers will be ... cheap.    I also recommend the web site formerly known as newenough.  I've bought several things from them over the years.  Otherwise there's tons of online options.   Get some real riding boots and gloves while you're at it.  I put a pretty high value on the continued use of my hands and feet.
  5. Nice battle rifle.  I've got a box-o-FAL sitting on my work bench.  It's been patiently waiting for me to put it together for too long.    Forget the rhinestones, fur is where it's at.
  6. iphone4 photo stored on my PC here at work...   From that site above:   Exif data Camera make : Apple Camera model : iPhone 4 Date/Time : 2013/06/02 17:16:54 Resolution : 2592 x 1936 Flash used : No (auto) Focal length : 3.8mm (35mm equivalent 35mm) Exposure time : 0.0013 s (1/789) Aperture : f/2.8 ISO equiv. : 80 Whitebalance : Auto Metering Mode : pattern Exposure : program (auto) Remove ExifAnother image There is no GPS info           Then right clicking on the photo on the computer and viewing the properties, then details tab shows the above info plus stuff related to its location on the PC and that's it.       edit... and +1 for irfanview.  Excellent piece of freeware.
  7.   This.    And gargle some warm salt water.
  8. Make sure your insurance company is aware of the current and potential future problems.  If that leak isn't fixed, it'll cause more damage and another claim.  A nasty gram from an insurance company's attorney is likely to get more attention than one from an individual.

    Snake guns

Keep the grass cut short around the pond and remove any brush or other hiding places for critters.  Snakes like to hide and hunt other critters that hide in areas where there's cover.  And you really want the snakes there as they do an excellent job of controlling the population of other less desirable critters.    Designate a "play area".  Play here, stay away from there.  Teach them to identify the various snakes they might see.    http://tennessee.gov/twra/pdfs/snakesposter.pdf   http://www.tnwatchablewildlife.org/display2.cfm?habitat=&sort=aounumber&typename=reptile&Taxonomicgroup=Reptile%20-%20Snakes   That said, do what you need to do to protect the kiddies.
  10.   To my knowledge, answers above.

    Snake guns

Snakes are venomous, not poisonous.  And it's illegal to kill them.  Just sayin'...
  12. Welcome!
  13.   My understanding is yes, they'll come back.    Leave the feeders out during the typical migration window (both directions) and you may get some transients that'll stop for a snack along the way.  They'll remember too.    I think their life span is more like 4 years in the wild.  They'll live longer in captivity.  I'll have to re-read field guide when I get home.
  14. Tula (and a few other foreign brands) is known to have "hard primers".  Sometimes they require a 2nd whack to ignite.
  15. Congrats!  Wish I could find the time to start riding again.
  16. If you do happen to see a bear (or any wildlife for that matter) while driving, please, PLEASE pull off the road.  Nothing is more annoying than some yahoo stopped in the middle of the road jamming up traffic while looking at some critter.
  17. Any of the 3 you listed should work fine.  Pick the one you shoot the best.  I've been quite happy with my PT145 (functionally equivalent to the 24/7 compact).
  18.     Drove over Watts Bar and Chickamauga over the weekend, both were nearly fully open.  The water was a boiling froth for several hundred yards downstream.
  19. Gander Mtn, Bass Pro, or Little River Trading Co. in Maryville.
  20.     You won't just happen upon a federal building in the middle of the woods.  If there's not a parking lot, there's not a building.    In Cades Cove, the campground buildings and visitors center are posted.  The mill, houses, cabins, barns, etc. are not.  I don't recall seeing a posting specifically on a restroom, but when I gotta pee I'm not looking real hard.  Obviously restrooms within other buildings would be posted.          Any sporting goods or outfitter type store should have it.           While they do typically stay away, my closest bear encounter was in the Rainbow Falls trailhead parking lot off Roaring Fork.  Mama and 2 cubs rooting through the underbrush literally 3 feet from the asphalt.  We were walking from our car to the trail and spotted them.  I grabbed my 5 yr old and put him in the bed of a pickup that happened to be sitting there.  I had my 2 yr old on my back, bear spray in one hand and hiking pole in the other.  We watched for a couple minutes then moved on.    The park does a good job dealing with problem bears.  I consider the bear spray as applicable to more than just bears.  A couple years ago, some otherwise rude people suddenly got polite when they noticed the can in my hand.
  21. Cool pics!  I'd love to see that in person.  I'm surprised they let you in there during the discharge.  I thought they closed everything off.
  22. Negative! It's horrible here. Worst place in the world. You'd have to be completely nuts to want to live here. Hope jersey is just a visit.
