Cool. I'm another wanna be guitar player. I didn't start until I was in college, wish I'd started a decade earlier. I really enjoy it, but have very little time these days. My best advice is to get her into some lessons. I piddled for years and couldn't do much other than make noise. Then I took a few lessons and began to play music. Then we moved and had kids....

Need advice on what and how for my wife to carry

Get her to read this. And by all means, let her pick how she carries.... http://www.corneredcat.com/article/holsters/how-do-i-hide-this-thing/ -
From one engineer to another, nice work.

Ah, there's another difference I forgot to mention... chromed bores. There's no chromium ore deposits in Yugoslavia. They couldn't do it domestically, so they didn't do it. Imagine what that kind of nationalism would do here..

Chasing deer is one my dog's favorite things to do. But she only does it at my parents house. Mom encourages it as it helps keep the deer from eating her flowers and I encourage it as the dog will sleep for hours afterwards. That said, there is a state leash law that most people are unaware of. Dogs are not permitted to "run at large". Contact the owners if you can find them. If that doesn't work, contact animal control. If that doesn't work, contact the local sheriff and TWRA. If that doesn't work...

Best Hearing Protection Advice please
peejman replied to Newman's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I use cheap muffs over foam plugs. The muffs are beveled so the don't interfere (much) with a rifle. You might look into custom ear plugs commonly used by musicians. -

Cool. Got a link or any other info about the course?

I don't have any issue with the slick-top or low profile police cars, as long as they have all the usual decals designating them as police cars. My issue is with fully unmarked (detective) cars being used for traffic enforcement. To me, that's not "to protect and serve", that's "to catch and penalize". As for the "failure to stop" ticket... yeah, I'd definitely take that one up with the judge. If I had to pay an extra $100 to make sure my wife got home safe that night, I guess that'd be ok. I'd probably list it as a donation and claim it as a tax deduction. :) I also have issue with stopping on the side of the interstate, regardless of time or type of car. I guess I've watched too many of those "idiot drivers" shows where people plow into them during a stop.

Some may call me a purist, but I'd look for an unmolested rifle, regardless of model. They're not much different from any other surplus rifle... look for chamber and muzzle erosion, bore corrosion, cracks in the wood, etc. SKS specific things to look for are to make sure the firing pin isn't stuck (it should wiggle) or broken (requires disassembly). SKS triggers tend to have LOTS of creep. Some people try to fix that and end up with a rifle that can slam fire. Cock the rifle and bang the butt hard on the ground several times. The hammer shouldn't fall. A botched trigger is fixable. There's several variants... Russian are generally the highest quality and highest price. Romanian, Polish, Yugoslavian, and Chinese are what you'll typically find. There's little differences, the most obvious being the yugo's grenade launcher. Some come with a bayonet, some have had it removed. The Chinese ones are highly variable. Some are really nice, others are junk. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SKS

This. Assuming the kids have good eyes, 300 yds with irons should be doable with a bit of practice. While DSA likes to claim 0.5 MOA from their FAL's, I remain unconvinced. A typical FAL is a 2-3 MOA gun. While a 6" group at 200 yds won't impress a national match shooter, it's still adequate for the purpose you mentioned. And they're fun because most people have no idea what they are. The M1A is an excellent, choice as well. Lots of options for them. Bang-for-your-buck (pun intended), the Garand is hard to beat.

Most excellent! There are various programs available for disabled hunters... http://www.buckmasters.com/resources/badf/disabled-hunters.aspx

Good stuff there. I've told my wife repeatedly to never, ever stop for an unmarked car on the side of the road. Find a gas station, store, anywhere there's people before you stop. If that's going to be more than a 30 second trip, call 911 and explain what you're doing. She might have to deal with an annoyed cop, but that's better than the alternative.

Given the .30-06 cartridge was developed in 1906 (hence the -06), a rifle made in 1911 should be fine, assuming the rifle itself is in good shape. While production quality controls have improved tremendously since then, the basic manufacture of the steel itself hasn't changed much.

If only they could somehow make breaking the law illegal. That's the best long term fix.
