For almost 40 years now, i've had some form of M1A, M14, M21, M25 or now the XM21 from BULA and can certainly state that preference as my tried and true platform. Messed with a few plastic guns and they just ain't got the magic in my hands. That said, my vote goes toward you gettin an M1A. I built a couple sidechargers and they been great so far... simple. If anything to snivel about it'd be a newbie mistake of my own when i didn't research enough to get an upper with a closed hole where the charging handle goes. Nothing catastrophic, i just don't like the open slot and been looking for something to snap in there as a blank.

Exactly... My old huntin bud loads his 45 colt to exceed 44 mag ballistics. VERY hot. He only shoots them in his Ruger tho. I'd be especially cautious puttin something that hot in a Smith.

I fondled around on the XDE in Atlanta too. Have to say at this time the trigger pull on it just did not seem just right. Lonng DA and if i didn't know better i'd swear it had a longer reset. I'm not a big striker fan but they had a better trigger pull by far on saturday morning.

You won't be disappointed hunting or playing with the 460

I can honestly say my 1st 460 was so accurate and awesome that i regretted getting talked out of it. Yea, it was a handful but it don't bite as long as you stay away from the front cylinder gap. Devastating to 2 liters at 88 yards even. That said, i eventually bought another to hunt with when the doctor said no more shoulder weapons. The wheel fell off my hunting plans so i didn't even fire a shot that season. BigBoy 460 is still awesome tho... just needs to get shot! If a fella wanted to back off the power, 454 Casull and hot buffalo 45 long colt shoot great too.

Thanks for the update! Sounds great. I'm feeling pretty good about getting one. Only complaint i've heard was like you said, the propietary mags instead of Glock or Kriss. That's a non issue for me and likely many shooters. I just want it to run clean every time. Ain't no fun at the steel tree target when they all get flipped to your side cause of a misfeed.

Couldn't stand it no longer... called 'em up. Took several attempts at calling but they must have caller ID. Three different emails and two return calls bounced back at me... 2 owners and a build tech. They are swamped with new orders which is a good thing. I knew i wasn't too strange fer liking a piston driven pistol caliber carbine. Uh, or there's lots of other folks as strange as me. Not sure. Have had several conversations at this point and had to count my play money... bought it! However, i went for the pistol version instead of the carbine. It'll be my first AR type pistol. Can't wait to whoop it out at the line when my buds commence with their 8 shot 1911s and plastic pistols. Looking at running a Fostech or Franklin binary trigger in it too. I tell ya' these are exciting times. Was gonna get me another top shelf 45 pistol but along came a youtube that really hit me. Late last year, a place called Flint River Armory came out with a piston driven 45acp carbine. Runs clean and very accurate so says the youtubers that i watch so far. Only downer i heard was it has a propietary mag. Sooo... Sold my 4 inch 500 mag and sorta wish i'da kept it. Lots of fun. Bout that same time, i had a 10 inch 460 mag too. That thing was a blast... literally! Missed both of them ever once in a while when i needed a magnum fix. One day, whalaa... Found a great deal on another spacegun 460, got it! The X-frames are a handful and the 460 does put out way more flash and boom than the 500 ever did. Jumped on the 2nd 460 so as to plink 2 liters at 200 yards. Amazingly accurate with SSTs. The advantage of the 500 would be those great big honking bullets you can load for it. Never shot those. The 300s were plenty enuff fer me.

Back when i was getting a retro build together, a TGO member put me onto NODAK SPUD. There's more going on there besides AR uppers... Real deal retro copies and historical facts. I found that site very interesting. They even offer the very early original "finger" charging handle upper with brown furniture. Now that'd be a hoot at the range. Anyways, i did do a deal with them and even tho the fella isn't the best at communication, i can truly say he knows his product and when i got my parts they were perfect. I ran 460 Rowland in a 1911 a while back and it wasn't all that bad of recoil. Like a 10mm in light frame. If not a reloader, ammo availability was definitely an issue. May be better nowadays. My biggest problem was targets... big holes and chunks get blowed out. Was definitely impressive.

My biggest issue with budget build shopping with several vendors is in no time at all you have 100 bucks built up in shipping charges.

  Agreed.   I been hooked on 1911s and M1As/M14s for over 30 years and they still make range time fun.  Yes, expensive BUT ,in my opinion, worth it.  A 20 round 2-liter bottle blaster one day, a 5 round hunter the next.  Fer plinkin, use 147gr surplus or PRVI then switch to 150gr Silvertips or Powershoks for meat on the table.  It's all in what you want.  Especially for inside 300.   As ReeferMac or any other active shooter getting into the sport will recognize there's always something new to try out and conquer.... calibers, stocks, twist rates, powder, bullet co-efficients, scope types.  The list is endless.  Been there and it has been a great ride.  Have fun discovering the nuances.  That's what it's all about.

Kinda went thru this ordeal recently... Wanted a Magpul handguard on  my 458 SOCOM.  Well, the regular carbine round cap don't slide over the .936 outer diameter of the barrel.  So scouring to the end of the internet proved no results.  Even the Lo-Pro link to DPMS was not fruitful as they cancelled my order after they charged my credit card.  They did refund but it was a shock they blew off the deal.  Apparently, no big caps the easy way.  Had to get out the drill motor, unibit, sand paper and cold blue... Done!

    I too have a cherished prize that really needs a new finish.  It's a Python with the nickel rubbed thin and it's turned yellowish in places.  Was thinking of doing the Colt custom shop but they've been in such financial turmoil, I've hesitated.   Does this CCR place do nickel? 

  Yep.  I like mine. Sweet install, no sweat, feels lot better.  Was worth it to me.

Been wondering what caliber to run and just about decided to do a 223 Wylde chamber.  Everything I have seen has been positive and it shoots either 223 or 5.56 equally well.   Any thoughts or experiences with any of this stuff?    :cool:   It's tuff reading awestruck stories in the gun rags then blindly wondering if the goods just ordered are really as good as they say.
