  1. The accuracy problems with inserts is not the twist rate or the bore size. It is the fact the inserts swage the bullets down to .221". If you open the inserts to allow the bullets to be .224" then they are a lot more accurate. Most 22 bullets run .224"-.225" so they will work fine in a .224" bore. But the .221" of the swaged bullets causes accuracy problems.   Here is some explanations: http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/49124-why-your-ar-conversion-wont-shoot-accurately
  2. Any transferrable NFA item can be transferred to an heir of the deceased now providing they can legally own it. And the transfer is free on a Form 5. It has been that way for a very long time too. http://www.atf.gov/press/releases/1999/09/090599-openletter-nfa-estate-transfers.html   I can see having a trust to allow friends or family to have access to the NFA items but I have asked the ATF several times, in writing, specifically if it gives the trustees unfettered access to NFA items in the trust and they will NOT answer me in writing. I would like to see where the ATF has ruled this to be the case. Also, anyone who has access to the NFA items also has the ability to sell, transfer or destroy those items as well or at least what I have been told by a couple of attorneys I spoke to when I was considering a trust.   And the rule change requiring fingerprinting and background of trustees is coming.   And one more thing. Since the proposed law change the ATF has not been working on any NEW trust submissions. They said if they did it would require them to go back and do it again except they would have to vet the trustees. So to save work later they are not doing any work on them now.   I was going to do a trust until a few of my friends didn't want any part of the NFA stuff tied to them. They are legal and can pass ANY background but prefer to keep the government out of their lives if they can help it. As far as my family they would steal everything I own in a heartbeat and sell it.   I say go for it but the benefits a trust once had over Form 1's and Form 4's is about to change.
  3. I have a converted Saiga and it will be with me forever. An AK in 12 gauge is an amazing piece of hardware. I have looked at the Veprs but the mags are the breaking point for me. They use a special magazine and Saiga mags cannot be converted to work. I have a bunch of Saiga mags already. If you don't have a bunch of Saiga stuff already I say go for it. Be aware their top rail is plastic. But it runs more reliably than most converted Saigas from what I have been reading. If you are local to me, Knoxville, you are more than welcome to pull the trigger on my Saiga.
  4. Check your local Walmart. I have seen DPMS for as low as $547. Their everyday price is $597. DPMS is not a hard use gun but is great for some who only shoots a few mags a month. They also sell Windhams which are made by the same factory and people who made Bushmasters before they were bought by Cerebus. Price on the Windhams run $647-$697 depending on model. Walmart also sells S&W ARs. The cheapest versions run ~$697 as well. Black Friday is coming and a few years ago Walmart was selling SIG AR's for CHEAP. I can't recall the exact price but I want to say they were a little over $500. All these are if you want to make one purchase and have a warranty in case something goes wrong. Nothing wrong with piecing a gun together either to spread the cost out over a period of time. And even if your Walmart doesn't have the AR you want they can order it with a down payment of 50%. All you need is the UPC and they can do the rest.
  5. The problem with that is most centerfire scopes have the parallax set for 100 yards and most rimfire shooting is at 50 yards or less.
  6. +1   They have decent prices and always seem to have guns at those decent prices. If you can walk in and get what you need without asking for advice or help it is a great place. I will go back again.
  7. I don't konw if it is a Knoxville thing but a lot of places here have employees with attitudes or are just plain lazy. Almost like they have a problem with the fact they are working. I always tell my wife when we that happens that maybe we need to fix that problem for them. One of our Walmarts is the worst. 8 out of 10 times if you ask an employee for help they roll their eyes or get an attitude. I was in Best Buy yesterday when I ask one employee where something was, he looked around for a second then pointed at another employee saying the other employee would help me. No big deal. Walked over to the other employee who was sitting at a computer and asked where something was. He got visibly upset that I had interupted what he was doing. And at one point I told him nevermind and that I would find it myself. Now I will say that this is a rarity in Best Buy but there are a few with Kurt being the biggest ass I think I have ever met.
  8. So yesterday I was in town doing a few things. While in town I decided to check Academy Sports for 22. We were about 3-4 minutes out so I called to see if they had any so we wouldn't need to stop if we didn't need to. I had no other need to go in there other than to buy 22 ammo so a quick call telling me they didn't would save me some time and effort.   I called and went through the options to get to the gun counter. It rang 5-6 times then there was a distinct pause and it began to ring again. After it rang 2-3 times someone from customer service picked up. I asked if they had any 22 ammo. He didn't say a word and transferred me to the gun counter. It rang 5-6 times again then the same guy at customer service answered and asked how I could help. I again asked about 22 and he asked me to hold please. I interupted him and told him I had already called back there twice. He said he would check on the 22 ammo and come back to the line. At this point we pulled into the parking lot of Academy Sports and my wife says I should just hang up because I am here but I didn't. I kept the phone to my ear while I waddled my happy butt into the store on crutches. I made a bee line for the gun counter but did not ask anybody anything when I got there because I wanted to see what the hold up was. So I stand there for 2-3 minutes and I watch as 4-5 employees are BSing and laughing amongst themselves. They were all standing around the cash register which is where the phone is. As I was standing there my phone began to ring again. I guess if someone is on hold for too long it automatically rings customer service again. Someone else picked up at customer service and asks if he can help. I tell him I am on hold to find out if there is any 22 ammo. He asks me to hold and transfers me, yet again, to the gun counter again. I am standing 3 feet from their phone as it begins ringing but they continue to BS and laugh amongst themselves without acting like the phone is even ringing. Then after 5-6 rings, in which they do not answer, I again get transferred back to the customer service where the last guy picks up again. I ask about 22 ammo and I again get transferred to the gun counter where the same 4-5 employees are still standing around BSing and laughing. I am standing there watching them all as the phone continues to ring and not a single one is even acknowledging it. It rings 4-5 times then a female employee runs up and frantically picks up the phone. I ask about 22 even though I already know they don't have any. We hang up and those 4-5 employees continue to BS as I walked away.   I spent close to 10 minutes waiting on the gun counter to answer with 5 minutes of it standing right in front of the gun counter watching them BS as their phone rang. I don't know about the first two calls to the gun counter but the last two I was standing right there without a customer in sight so I know it wasn't like they were busy with a customer. I can only assume they didn't answer the first two calls for the same reason as the last two.   So on my way out I asked for a manager. I told him his employees were not answering the phones back at the gun counter. He was nice as can be but started to make excuses so I interupted him and told him I was standing right there as the phone rang without them answering it because they were chatting away amongst themselves. At that point he seemed to get a little pissed and said he would take care of it. No clue whether he did or just got a good laugh at my expense but at least he knows now and can't claim ignorance when I talk to his boss the next time this happens.   I am not going to fool myself into thinking I am not going to buy from there ever again or boycott the place or anything. But every time I pull into the parking lot I am going to call to see where it leads.
  9. You know you can't resist it.   My son would drench himself with it every mornign before school. The whole house smelled of it.
  10. Adding more batteries to an all metal container would make it lethal. Like those water storage bottles. And I bet if it was empty the TSA would allow it past security. The pipe cutter is used to open the batteries and with a little work it can be done by hand. And to make it even more effective put cayenne pepper in with the water. It would make it and explosive pepper bomb.
  11. It would have happened with a regular pistol. What killed them was not the gun but the mishandling of the gun while they cleared a malfunction.
  12. They said all NEW trust submissions were on hold. A November approval was submitted in the first few months of the year not since the proposed law change. Anyone can call and verify. Call our examiner and ask. By the way we are region 8.
  13. If you are used to the AK and already have magazines I would get a suppressor for it. Then I would get a Glock 19 and a suppressor for it. Now that you still have over $1k left over I would get a Mossberg 500/590 then use the rest of the money on ammo and gear.   The reason I think this is the AK and Glock are the most reliable guns on the market. And if you do have a problem with the Glock you can grab parts from any other Glock.   Now if you don't already have an AK and the gear for it I would get an AR in 223. The reason is the AR is probably the most popular autoloader in the US so finding parts is going to be easier than any other rifle.
  14. Hope the parents sue the teacher and school district into oblivion. Then they use the proceeds to buy a Duck Dynasty shirt for very student.
  15. Get a SilencerCo Sparrow in SS and don't look back.   I, on the other hand, have seen the bad side of Mohawk. I have seen problems with the quality but, more importantly, I got to see how he handled those problems. There was well over $5K worth of useless stuff from him that was returned to him. He promised to make it right but I think he was just waiting for us to just give up. I do not know the finaly outcome but I know it hadn't been made right in a year. And the items were stuff that was sold by the shop when they arrived. It was only a few days later the shop realized 80% of the order was unuseable and the other 20% needed significant work to be useable.   So for me I will pass on Mohawk but not because of the quality but because if you have a problem you might be left cold. All manufacturers have problems but the good ones do what it right.
  16. Nikon 2-7 P22. Great scope and it runs ~$170.   There are two versions, a BDC with 1/2" turrets and a duplex with BDC turrets.
  17. My wife and I were in Applebee's in Knoxville and they were not checking any ID's. A lot of people coming in where uniform parts or a hat. Made us wonder how many were not veterans and were just there to get a free meal. They know me well enough to know that I am a veteran. We order the say thing every time we go in so I took the savings and gave a nice tip to the waitress. Nothing like getting a 50% tip.   My wife also coined a saying I will use from now on. For us Veteran's Day will not be referred to as "National Story Telling Day".
  18. Could also be a valve or a love on the cam that went flat. Any unusual ticking noises? I know all Fords do unless they have adjustable valvetrain. The back and forth rather quickly makes it seem like it might be something a bit more serious than a carb problem. When you run an engine out of gas it runs very, very lean right before it dies. And if you are at WOT or close to it the lean condition can damage the valve and seat. Although unlikely it sounds like it is something related to the valve or the cam based on the vacuum gauge bouncing back and forth.   Sounds like the carb needs a rebuild and a new base gasket for the carb to start then see what happens.   Are you sure you are capping off every line coming off the carb? There are a few that are way under the carb that can be very difficult to see. Also, pull the vacuum line off the distributor when you test the vacuum.
  19. I am planning on bring at Norris Saturday. Bring it out.
  20. There are very few causes for low vacuum. Timing wrong and a leak. You checked the timing so it is a vacuum leak, put and simple. Did the truck sputter or backfire as it ran out of gas? If so it could have blown a vacuum line off anywhere. Some vehicles even have vacuum lines that run into the cab. Pinch off all vacuum lines coming off the engine and see if the vacuum reading improves. If it does then you have a line that is either off or has a leak. Unpinch one line at a time until the vaccum signal goes bad again and the last line you unpinched is the problem.   Vacuum lines are notorious for getting small cracks in them from the engine heat. The crack can be long and not even look like a crack.   Also, most carburators have several vacuum ports. Make sure all of them are capped.   For checking the gasket use WD40 and spray it around the carburator gasket. If the idle changes, if the vacuum increases or you see blue smoke coming from the exhaust then it is a gasket that has a problem. Depending on the carb a backfire can mess up the gasket and open of places that shouldn't be. And in some cases, like older Holley carbs, it can blow out the power valve.   I would not hot rod the truck at all because it is buring extremely lean right now. That can cause some damage if not corrected.
  21. Its Obama math.   Seriously though. If they gave everyone a million dollars it would do nothing because everyone would get it. We would see prices go up across the board. Besides, any time you give anybody anything they don't appreciate it.
  22. Again. If Spikes isn't going to fix it I will. Just need to get together.
  23.     Not feeding the bears is one thing but does it actually say "The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves"? If so I would really like to see that.
  24. Please link the policy. I can't seem to find that reason anywhere in the NPS policies.
