  1. Recently I have been doing a little research on the Whelen 35. it seems for all practical purposes to be a great round for medium size game? I was curious if anyone had any experience good or otherwise with a rifle in this caliber? Are rifles still being made in this caliber? If so what are your thoughts on them? Blessings Doug
  2. Hi folks; new to your forum and really like what I see. I am trying to repair a Mossberg 472 (Western Field 47) lever action 30-30. I have watched all the available instructions (that I could find) on YouTube; most are excellent. My problem is a light or no primer strike. Most often the hammer will not even lose on the transfer block. I have replaced the hammer spring tube which seems to be the most common problem. No joy. All parts are free moving- no hang-ups anywhere. I have lots of exploded diagrams for reassembly. Note: I am attempting to fix this gun for a friend who disassembled it and could not figure out how to get it back together. I can understand that; it is not an easy gun to reassemble if you were not paying attention when taking it apart. Anyway, I am confident that I have assembled it correctly (well, maybe not...the hammer pusher will only install one way, so it is not upside down ). It acts as though the hammer spring is not strong enough to push the hammer forward. If you hold the trigger in the firing position, it will easily close in on the transfer bar when pushed. I tried an experiment. I took the old hammer spring tube, tapped the threaded end as far as the tap would go and then drilled the spring end through (5/16" drill in my lathe, so I am confident it is straight) and used the stock attaching bolt to compress the hammer spring a little tighter to see if a stronger spring pressure would cure the issue. All I accomplished was making the hammer harder to cock. This gun has an action called a 'rebound hammer' and I have checked, by taping the transfer bar, that the hammer makes contact (when it does travel forward) and it mostly makes contact but still not enough to strike the primer with any force. My friend said it fired consistently before he took it apart. By the by for those of you trying to disassemble one for whatever reason, the loading gate must be depressed a good bit before the action will drop out. It will fall past the gate then. The safety must be off and the hammer forward, hammer spring assembly removed (this will remain under pressure from the spring, so be careful. It is aluminum and it will wipe out the end threads if taken apart without maintaining forward pressure on the tube. Likewise, when assembling, it is not easy to line up the tube with the spring pressure so be careful when installing it to keep it straight) Once all of that is done, it will fall out if you hold your tongue right. The videos on YouTube all blow past assembling the hammer 'pusher' part. One remarks on the hammer spring tube pressure issue, but nothing on assembling the 'pusher' part. I have even tried assembling it upside-down just in case. No joy. I am at my wits end. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  3. Posting here only since 300 AAC is primarily a rifle caliber, to get more input. Thanks!
  4. I would like to know all of the details about a Handi-Rifle chambered in 22 Hornet. I'm considering one and have never even seen one in person, only pics. Things I'm interested in is: trigger pull weight, accuracy, total gun weight, functionality of cocking the hammer with a scope installed, quality of the iron sights, length and twist of the barrel, what kind of wood is the stock and forearm made of, interchangeability of barrels, and just some reviews from people that own or have owned one. Even "opinions" are appreciated. Thanks.

  6. Just a beautiful day spent with friends, military surplus rifles and cigars.
  7. I'm pretty sure I need this rifle - Savage Rascal Target: http://www.forum.savagearms.com/firearms/model/RascalTarget Problem is that the only place I can find them is Cheaper Than Dirt or Grab A Gun. Anyone seen one in the flesh in the greater Nashville area?
  8. Has anyone seen or gotten one of the new Henry single shot rifles yet? I have seen and handled one that was in 223. I loved it. Not the caliber that I was looking for though. i would love to have one in the 44 mag and 45-70 i have been checking my local dealer every week. They tell me the are on allocation? I hope to have the 45-70 for this years season? I am seeing them on gunbroker but nowhere else? Blessings
  9. http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2018/07/19/armys-new-machine-gun-will-blast-like-battle-tanks.html The Army’s new weapon will look like a light machine gun, but will put M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank-style blasting power literally at the fingertips of U.S. soldiers. The new light machine gun will weigh less — and yet shoot farther. It should make U.S. soldiers even more lethal and enhance their speed and mobility while improving their safety in future combat. he Next Generation Squad Automatic Rifle (NGSAR) may replace about 80,000 SAWs (the M249 squad automatic weapon). The well-known and loved M249 SAWs were already beasts — now the Army’s light machine gun is going to get even more powerful. Armed with the NGSARs, soldiers will have the confidence of knowing the new weapon can be relied on for stopping power against sophisticated adversaries who arrive to fight in advanced body armor. The aim is for the NGSARs to fire bullets at pressure levels similar to those achieved by tanks when they fire. Rounds will smash through advanced adversary body armor even at a distance, allowing soldiers to accurately shoot while maintaining a safe distance from the threat whenever possible. Read more.
  10. I'd like some commentary on the Remington Tac 12 or 20 Gauge shotguns.I'm considering buying one. Really don't know much about shottys, so asking for thoughts and opinions on which is better for all round use. By that I mean home defense, car or truck carry, and which gauge to go for. Thanks for any input.
  11. Looking to purchase a rifle for 100 yard ranges. I'm not interested in hunting, so larger calibers aren't necessary... this is all for fun, anyway. Been looking at a couple of rifles that come in a few different calibers. 1. The Ruger American. It comes in .22 rimfire, .270, .243, and .308. Other than the .22 the ammo costs are close; about .75 to .80 per round. 2. The Remington M783. It comes in all of the above except .22... but does come in .223rem. .223 rem goes down to about .36 per round which is nice... and besides, I already shoot that caliber. I'm confident in Ruger and know that if there is a problem, they'll make it right. The Remington however, I know very little about. I've read review after review on them and it seems that most people reviewing guns are usually doing so for the company, or something. I'm hoping that there are a couple of you guys here that have a little experience with either of these rifles that would like to share your input. Also, for range shooting... 50/75/100 yards, which caliber works best? If, I sound totally off of my rocker, and there are better options... I'd love to hear about those too. Thanks in advance... Long time lurker, few time poster. Charles

Is this word pronounced like "man licker"? Whenever I see this word i cringe a little because I think ",man licker".
  13. Hi guys... here's a question for all of the firearms experts. Did anyone ever manufacture a .22 Hornet in a pump action rifle? If so, who, when, and can you give any details? Pics would even be better. Thanks.
  14. I recently obtained a 21" .410 shotgun barrel for my TC Contender G2. It's a factory barrel and came with one "Full Choke" tube installed, inside the barrel. It was checked with a micrometer, and the dimensions match "Full Choke" for a .410. A friend sent me the dimensions for a "Modified" choke and I believe an "Improved Cylinder". Does anyone have a .410 that can verify that there are actually three choke tubes for the .410? Next question... if the other two choke tubes do exist, can anyone tell me where I might buy the other two, to finish out my set? Don't say Thompson Center, as they no longer exist. Thanks for your information and help.
  15. I need some expert information on the choke tube system installed in Thompson Center 21" .410 Shotgun Barrels. This is not the 45 Colt/.410 pistol barrel. This is a TC manufactured barrel and it has one "Full Choke" choke tube installed in it. I presume it was installed at the factory. I have been looking for a "Modified" and a "Improved Cylinder or Cylinder" choke tubes for it. I've contacted some and no one seems to know the details on the choke tubes for this little shotgun barrel. Now, this "is not" an Encore barrel, it's a Contender barrel. I'm not sure if they ever made a .410 barrel for the Encore. I've only heard of 12 & 20 gauge. I need to know if TC put out a choke tube "system" for this .410 Contender barrel. If there was only one choke tube..."Full Choke"... why bother, just build the barrel as a Full Choke barrel. I ordered a set of Beretta choke tubes from Brownell's, but they would not fit. The threads on the Full Choke tube that came with the barrel, has the threads up near the muzzle, and the threads are courser than most choke tubes. Educate me please!
  16. If you have a SUB-2000 purchased in 2017 or 2018, check your serial number. Some shipped with bad barrels. https://recalls.keltecweapons.com/
  17. A few years ago I bought a CZ 720 shotgun. It was an impulse buy and it has been in my safe unfired since the day I took it home. This morning I gave my old 870 Wingmaster to my son. So I took the CZ 720 out, loaded a round into the tube, racked the charging handle back and nothing happened. The shell did not get picked up and chambered. I finally got it to feed and it would not eject. I worked with the shotgun for an hour and finally the charging handle (I think that is what it's called) BROKE OFF! Parts flew all over the kitchen. I went on youtube and finally got it back together. I looked the shotgun over and noticed that the quality of the gun wasn't very good. My old 870, or should I say my son's old 870, was made in the late 1950s. It's action is smooth as silk. The bluing is still good and the wood is unscratched. This CZ that has been in my safe for 3 years has some scratches on the wood and the barrel and there is a rust spot on the sight. I am going to take this back to my local gun shop and see what he will do. He's a great guy and I am a loyal customer. When I leave, I will no longer own a CZ shotgun made in Turkey.
  18. What are you guy's thoughts and experiences on Delton rifles and parts ? I have a stripped lower and have saw a few Delton kits on AR15's and was wondering about them . They have all but the lower . Any information is appreciated.

  22. Any thoughts on 224 Valkyrie? 90 grains screaming out to 1k+ yards seems very impressive for a .22 caliber.
  23. Anyone in nashville good at rebluing a rifle? I've got a browning a bolt rifle that could use some TLC going in and out of the woods and truck through the years. I could probably use the touch up stuff myself but taking it to a pro might have better results.
  24. I want to buy a rifle. I was on the marksmanship team in high school. I went to the range a few times with my dad who was infantry. It's been about 10 years now, but I want to get a rifle. The problem is which one? I'm completely overwhelmed with all of the options. I'll likely only buy one rifle to go with my one pistol, so I want to get the right one. Something accurate, easy to maintain, fun, fairly budget friendly. What would you recommend and why?
  25. As stated, which is better? Hunting at less than 200 using slightly old eyes that need reading glasses.
