Another Ruger!!!!

Nothing new but it was the missing piece for me.  I only needed it to complete the */22 set.  So here it is, the out of production, not well loved Ruger 96/22 in 22lr.  I've been shopping for one for a while and even though I didn't get a screaming deal on this one, I got it for what I think is a decent price right now.

I'll have to get it out with its brothers soon for a */22 family picture.

Someone asked me what I was gonna get next.   Now I have to decide.  Part of me wants to get the */44 set.  But before I get too far in that, I need to get a spare barrel for the 96 and get it threaded.  Or maybe I can get a Gemtech Mist modded to fit the 96 and have the ultimate Ruger squirrel gun.

If you go for the Ruger 44 set. Good luck finding the DEERSTALKER at a decent $$$.

I doubt I would go for one with the deerstalker stamp.  A later model would suit me fine.  And I've seen them for around the same as I paid for the 96.  Its up there, but not out of my range yet.

Great set up for a barrel swap and a certain NFA item:)  I've never had a 96, I would imagine the bolt, trigger group and barrel set up are all the same.

None of it actually.  I don't know for sure about trigger components yet as I haven't disassembled it but none of it is a direct swap I know.  The bolt components are same (I think, I know the extractor is kinda) but everything is just different enough.  The 96 uses a dual extractor setup.  10/22 barrels will work but you have to either cut a second groove 180 degrees from the first or remove the second extractor from the 96.  Most people tend to think the latter is a bad idea and former option is the correct way to go.

I know you will appreciate it so when I get some time, I'll disassemble the 96 next to 10/22 and share the comparison pictures.

The barrels of the 96/22 must be like those of the 77/22.  I know one TGO'r who sent his 10/22 hammer forged target barrel away to have the chamber re-reamed, head spaced and the second extractor slot made so he could install it in his 77/22.  That little rifle is one fine shooting machine.

Not quite.  The 77/22 has a longer barrel shank and distance from v block to end than both the 96 and 10/22.  The 96 is kind of a hybrid between the two I guess.

Depending on how your "new" 96/22 shoots you could always send the barrel and bolt to http://www.ct-precision.com/, and have both "accurized."   Send the trigger group to Brimstone http://www.brimstonegunsmithing.com/collections/ruger-10-22 and keep everything original yet beat most guys on the range with their CZ bolt guns or even some sporter Anschutz - maybe.

Be aware though, if shooting were baseball I am playing church league slow pitch.
