What happened to this barrel?

Recommended Posts

So I picked up a sporterized Springfield 1878 Trapdoor to play around with. What was done to the end of the barrel to make that line?

The plan is to use it as a single shot hunting rifle if it is accurate enough.

just throwing a wild guess out there, but maybe it's from being in a  rack?  Other guess would be whoever put the front sight on maybe had it cranked into a vice of sorts and it rolled around on them when punching out the original post.

I see online that it could have a front sight cover.

Maybe someone pulled one off it. The barrel discoloration size lends to that too.

I could get behind that theory.  If you zoom in and look close enough there is a definite band of discoloration.  I still think solder was involved.

I would agree. Like some of the Mosins it could have been soldered on.

KahrMan is the silver on the barrel raised, or is that cuts into the metal?

It is slightly raised.  You can feel it when you rub your finger across it.

TGO to the rescue again.  Mow that I really look at the barrel you can see the band of discoloration.  It makes sense that a band style front sight was removed.

Now the next question is how to do I remove the soldier?  Will a heat gun soften it up enough to get it off?

A soldering iron and desoldering bulb might do it, but might take some time. You could control where the heat is better that way though.

I'll bet you'll have a hard time getting that solder hot enough with a heat gun. It'll heat a big area and perhaps also weaken the solder that's holding the sight on.

You might be able to remove it with a soldering iron and wick. Otherwise you could polish it off with some fine sandpaper or they make chemical solder removers.
