FL to TN

Recommended Posts

My Sweetie (wife) and I were up for our 10th Smokys visit, first week of May.

Moved to FL some 30+years ago, retired 1 and 3/4 years ago. Now house is for sale, moving to Rutledge, TN.

Have a FL CCP, good for 2 more years.

How soon will TN want me to change to TN CCP after I move to TN?

Will TN honor the classes I took to get this, OR will I need to take TN classes?

Classes were conducted by a NRA certified instructor.

I passed with both of my hand guns.  NOT required, I had both with me.

Thanks for the assist!!  :-)

Welcome to TN, we're glad to have you! I also moved from FL to TN. You will have 6 months from the time you establish residency until you need to have a TN permit. The good news is that you can use your FL permit while you wait for your TN permit. The bad news is that any class you took in FL is essentially worthless. You will have to go through the entire process here in TN but it's really not that bad. If you need some suggestions on where to take the class near Rutledge then I'm sure someone can help you out. Also, it is legal to have a loaded firearm in your vehicle even without a permit. I think it just can't be on your person.

I just noticed you live in Ellenton. My brother is right by you in Parrish and my mom and step dad are getting ready to move down there to be near them. Small world. I like FL but when you're 22nd in land mass and 3rd in population it is starting to become too crowded.

First time I've ever heard anyone infer that from the statute.

From handgunlaw.us  I actually just saw this the other day. Maybe they are mistaken?

Note: If you can legally own a firearm you can carry it openly or concealed in a privately owned vehicle without any type of permit/license to carry. The Firearm can be anywhere in the vehicle but it can’t be on your person.

Just made up from whole cloth AFAIK, as statute doesn't say that at all, and there's been no AG opinion to differ.  Rather disappointing from him really.

Maybe it's just poorly stated, and he just meant can't step outside the car with it, dunno.
