Some still stand and come up for sale from time to time. Here's an article on the fort array near Kent where someone with more money than sense planned to redevelop them into a luxury casino hotel resort. This was 3 years ago and I haven't heard a peep about it since then.

You have a spotter in the foreground. My guess is small aircraft passing over. That would be a bunch of lead flying. Could be enough to take it down or at least discourage it. I would think blind volleys of bullets would be pretty wasteful if used against anything except a huge mass of people. 

On a side note, looks like it may be a female sniper furthest up the incline.
