Ruger Mark IV Recall

" Ruger recently discovered that all Mark IV™ pistols (including 22/45™ models) manufactured prior to June 1, 2017 have the potential to discharge unintentionally if the safety is not utilized correctly. In particular, if the trigger is pulled while the safety lever is midway between the "safe" and "fire" positions (that is, the safety is not fully engaged or fully disengaged), then the pistol may not fire when the trigger is pulled. However, if the trigger is released and the safety lever is then moved from the mid position to the "fire" position, the pistol may fire at that time. "

So, if the safety is in the "fire" position and the trigger is pulled it might fire?  Man, I've always kind of counted on that feature.

It is a must on all my guns but in this case the pistol discharges when the safety is moved from the middle position to fire without pulling the trigger.

The video found at the link demonstrates the problem a bit more clearly than their wording.

If you are following the rules of gun safety this is a non issue.

Thats the problem.  A lot of people don't follow the rules and this is a guns  lot of beginners will be using.

Hate to say it, but in the past if you fooled around and did not use a gun safely and you hurt yourself, it was a painful lesson. Now it is grounds to sue the manufacturer. This is clearly a product fault, but one most of us would never encounter. Hopefully the recall does not cause a fuss for many of you. I know I do not yet have one of these, but would like to eventually.

I just tried to duplicate the problem after applying handgun safety protocols of course and cannot get my safety to not be either in safe or fire position.

Perhaps it's because I've kept it pretty clean and lubed even after inclimate weather exposure. It has a very positive transition from safe to fire and vice versa.

The recall says they'll swap the safety and sear.

I wonder it they will be some sort of beefed up over safe government approved version that'll make the pistol less reliable. Similar to other safety devices.

I'll keep an eye on this, thanks for sharing.

Edit:

my mistake, mine is a MKIII :)

prices for MKIVs are still to high for me.

I'm on the list for sending my Mk IV back. Only the lower part goes back, the serial number is on the part you keep so it makes it a little easier for shipping. They will send me a prepaid box when they think they can turn it around in about a week. They are sending a magazine for it as a thank you/apology.

Mine does not seem to have the problem. I get in that half on mode to often. For me it is because of the placement of the ambidextrous safety. It has never fired when pushing the safety on after not firing.

They tell you not to use it till it has been repaired but I will continue using it, following safe shooting rules, not like it is going to explode in my hand.

Got my lower assembly back from Ruger today. Fast turn around, 8 days from when I dropped it at the Post Office till it showed up back in my mailbox with the free magazine in place.

Safety feels more positive, will run a couple of magazines through it tomorrow.
