CMP 1911s - It might actually happen this time

Recommended Posts

It's worth noting that the current law 'allows' the military to transfer up to 10,000 .45 pistols per year to CMP.  So far, the Secretary of Defense has declined to do that.  So, Trump could tell Mattis to do it tomorrow.

The new bill says that the Secretary of defense 'Shall' transfer .45 pistols to CMP, and removes the 10,000 per year restriction.

At this point I don't trust the Senate to do anything worthwhile, though.

It's my understanding that the current law allows the Secretary of the Army to make the transfer. There is no Secretary of the Army right now, so technically nobody is allowed to make the transfer even if El Presidente tells the Sec Def to get it done. That may be a misunderstanding. I can't seem to find the text of this year's amendment, so I don't know who is being directed to make the transfer.

Bear in mind that even if the guns are transferred soon.  CMP still has to set up a system to unpack, clean,  inspect, repair and grade them. And their staff isn't all that big. I don't expect to see any for sale until at least a year after CMP gets them. More likely two years.
