Contacts with astigmatism

Recommended Posts

I have a pretty high degree of astigmatism, I've worn contacts in the past, but stopped because one of the contacts would rotate and I would have blurred vision.

I'm tired of wearing glasses and I'm thinking about returning to contacts.

I'd like to know if anyone here has any first hand experience and if there have been any advances in the last 8 years.

Thanks

My son has a astigmatism in his left eye. These are the contacts that he uses and seem to do a good job for him. The Toric version is the one the uses in the eye with astigmatism and the non toric version in his other eye.

I have used B&L softlens toric for few years. Never had a problem when they rotate. I did get a box once where the lenses seemed to rip on the edge. But overall I have been pleased and they allow good air flow to the eyes.

I tried different soft lens without success due to the level of astigmatism I have but mostly compounded by how my eyes contaminated soft lenses. Then I tried gas permeable hard lenses which worked great until dry eye problems came into play. If your eyes produce the right level of moisture I'd discuss this with your eye doctor. But if your comfortable with having LASIK done and fall into the desirable perimeters then think about that.

This sounds like my situation, I also have a high degree of astigmatism.  I've tried hard lenses before, they're a no go for me and lasik is not going to be an option (cost) any time soon.

This is my set up too with a normal lens in the other. Not sure on the severity of my astigmatism but I'm wearing this in one eye and they have done fine too.

I wore toric hard lenses for 25+ years, loved them as I could wear them for 12-18 hrs/day, from the time I got up till I went to bed.  I got them when I was 18-20 y/o, and wore them until I was 45-50.  My prescription never changed, just new contacts when needed.  I quit wearing contacts due to the ageing process, still wear glasses.  I don't really miss them now as glasses are easier on a daily basis for the most part IMO.  I did have to start wearing "cheaters" while still wearing the contacts to read all the paperwork I had to deal with.  Never tried the soft ones due to my severe astigmatism, eye doctor said they looked like a "football" with a bad seam.  LOL

Same here.  Gave up on the gas permeable contacts I had worn for 33 years in 2012, due to dry eyes.  Went back to glasses for 3 years, hated every minute of it.  Finally switched to the newer soft lens, they work, although I have to use reading glasses for up-close work. My astigmatism is probably a medium level though.  To the OP, ask your optometrist, often they can fit you with some trials contacts for a week or 2, find out what does, or does not work with you.  When I switched to the soft lens, the process took about a month to find a pair I could see with, I'm very glad to be back out of glasses though. Good luck.

Just went to the eye doc yesterday...my prescription hadn't changed, but they gave me a different brand to try. They are thinner. First thing I noticed was I couldn't keep them on my finger to put them in. Now they seem to fold up on my eye and randomly get blurry, and I don't seem to see as well when they are clear.. I'm throwing them in the trash when I get home and going back to the acuvue oasys for astigmatism. Never had a problem with them and wear them weeks at a time...
