Not any more.  There were several teams with losing records that played last year.

Right, won/loss record is nearly meaningless when you have a rich and loyal fan base who will spend lots of money traveling to a meaningless football game.  If they get a bowl game, it'll be somewhere warm.

That was only because there wasn't enough teams with 6 wins to fill the bowl slots. No guarantee that happens every year.

Way to get around the buyout?

Pilot Oil/Cleveland Browns and Dish Network money available from donors, an $8 mil buyout won't be a big deal that being said it's supposed to be lower than that after this season.

The longer they wait to dump him (and most of his staff), the cheaper it will be, that's how his contract is structured.

That said, $8M is of little consequence to a program that brings in more than $100M annually.

The delay in firing Jones tells me that (1) the AD is being pragmatic, as he should and is known for, and (2) they don't think any of his assistants are worthy of replacing him.  That may change if they lose this weekend.

Still no source, just speculation on your part.

A committee of the UT Board of Trustees today approved a $340 million renovation project for Neyland Stadium to begin next summer.  In other words, there is enough money to equip the entire coaching staff with Sabans.

Money is not at issue at UT.

Several newspapers in the state have reported this. Either believe them or don't. I doubt any of us will be getting our hands on copies of the contracts any time soon.

Here's one: http://www.knoxnews.com/story/sports/college/university-of-tennessee/football/2017/10/08/fire-butch-jones-buyout-contract-tennessee-vols-football-ut-volunteers/739577001/

I've read a couple of news stories and heard the talk on TV as well.  The $$ amount of the buyout not in question, the comment about just Pilot Oil/Haslam/Dish $$ going straight to the buyout issue is probably not in line with NCAA rules/regulations.

The part about "donor $$", Pilot/Dish $$.

Pilot and Dish are major sponsors of the program, what else would their money be spent on?   Stadium renovations, apparently.

Jones's salary isn't paid (in full) by the university. They're not legally allowed to pay him more than the President of the university. All the extra pay comes from separate entities (booster programs, etc.) that aren't officially part of the university.

They can work a booster pay-off in different ways. Let's say they are about to spend $20 million on renovating the athletic center (or the library, or a dormitory, or whatever). The school has $20M to do the project, but a donor (or group of donors) comes along and offers $8.5M towards that project. That frees up $8.5M of the school's cash to go get rid of Jones and Co. They might work it out so the amounts aren't quite so on the nose, but you get the idea.

It's kind of like how politicians raid school budgets to pay for something nobody wants to pay for, then cry that we need to raise taxes to fund the schools. IT'S FOR THE CHILDREN!
