SI Training Day with Randy Harris, 12/9/17

Recommended Posts

Despite the cold and 3 hour cruise both ways, I am glad I attended.

This is my third or fourth Training Day with Randy; self assessment vs. skill development.

Being practical and only tactical by accident, my kit was pretty basic by design; what and how do I typically conceal carry.

75B, N82 Tactical, mags stowed in pockets or simply secured in my waistband for drills.

I would rate my overall mechanics fair; no issues sweeping aside layered cover garments and presenting my pistol.

My holster slowed down my draw and interfered with getting a consistent initial grip. The full sweat shield is a boon and curse.

I've engaged GjohnsonIV to modify the sweat shield with a combat cut.

I always enjoy the shooting parts and while the class did run over due to the timed drills, the Fed Air Marshall qualifier is pretty fun.

My shooting was average, I was pulling slightly down and right. I think I figured it out after the fact; consistent grip on draw coupled with squeezing my support hand fingers.

My secret Santa gift was Fairbairn's 'Get Tough' The illustrations are as interesting as the content. For a 100% average sized guy like me,  there is some pretty useful techniques to avoid becoming a victim when a gun is not available for defensive purposes. On a side note, I am trying to find a better link for the Fleet Marine Force Reference Publication of 'Shoot to Live'  https://archive.org/stream/Shooting_to_Live_Fairbairn_and_Sykes_FMFRP_12-81/Shooting_to_Live_Fairbairn_and_Sykes_FMFRP_12-81_djvu.txt

After class, I ran a few rounds through my M1 carbine, experienced some failures to eject, packed it away. Inspection at home revealed the extractor had broken. The leading edge which catches the rim sheared off. Strange and could not determine if the metal had any crystalization (replaced with old new stock)

Looking forward to attending another session with Randy.
