Anyone into comics?

Recommended Posts

A very nice comic book store has opened up about 5 minutes from my house and I’m contemplating getting into the hobby. I figure if I keep it down to a few different publications it will be a cheap hobby and something easy and fun to collect.

Anyone else into this and have some pointers on where to start? I read x-men as a kid but that’s about it. I’m sure I’ll start with the marvel and DC stuff.

I’m a fan of graphic novels. I prefer the longer form storytelling and more mature themes available for the format. Even for the monthlies that I follow I’ll wait and grab the collected volumes. As an extra bonus, you can put them on a shelf like books instead of stacked boxes of poly bagged comics.

Here are several favorites of mine,

First is ‘Executive Outcomes’ based on the true story of operatives who worked for the private military contracting firm of the same name.

Second is ‘Wanted’. It’s the source material for the Angelina Jolie movie of the same name. It’s also waaaay better than that celluloid atrocity.

Third is ‘ExSanguine’ a great little horror tale about a Vampire.

Finally, the only actual superhero comic of this bunch. ‘Umbrella Academy’ which is written by Gerard Way from the band My Chemical Romance. Really cool and interesting take on the genre.

Check out some of the online / iPad apps. For a minimal monthly fee you can get access to large portion of Marvels older content. It tends to lag a few months behind whats on the racks but it saves a TON of money. Don't know if DC has anything similar.

You might hit a store that has a backlog of older comics. You could buy up a bunch of issues of a storyline for not a lot if you avoid the highly collectible old or rare sets. That is unless you are really collecting. If you are just reading them, having mint copies is not a priority. Or you could sample some storylines, genre, and companies to see what you like. A lot of times $30 will net you as many standard comics.
