No unauthorized weapons allowed

Recommended Posts

Went to Horizon Hospital today in Dickson to visit a friend. The entrance was posted “No unauthorized weapons allowed”.

I don’t really know what that means, but I was armed, and figured that since I had a HCP, I was “authorized”. I’m not sure that was the original intent of the posting, but it appears I was legal, according to the law. What say TGO?

It's like a Doctors office. It's one of those places that have drugs. Carrying is a no no.

I’ve never heard of a universal prohibition of carrying where drugs are. You sure about that? I thought the only prohibited places were government buildings and places properly posted.

That sign just makes the sheeple feel better, it means nothing legally.

And yes, the presence of drugs has no bearing. Hospitals, drug stores, doctors offices, etc. all have to be legally posted.

Government buildings also have to be posted. They're not automatic no-go locations.

The exception to that is a room with a judicial proceeding. That's normally a courtroom, but can literally be anywhere, even non-governmental buildings. It's not unheard of for a judge to hold a proceeding in a hospital room, for instance. Even if said hospital isn't posted, that specific hospital room would be off-limits in this example.

As for the OP, yes you were legal in the letter of the law. That's not a statutorily compliant posting (the sign doesn't meet the requirements of the written law). But nobody really knows what that means in the real world because it has not been tested in a court. An officer could arrest you, a DA could charge you, and a judge could say "what part of the sign was unclear to you?" As I said, nobody really knows. I'd like to think that any one of those people would have some sense about them, ending any issues, but if half of what I've read about our legal system is true then I don't have a lot of faith in common sense prevailing.
