question about comcast

hey everyone, so i just moved from a apartment in mount juliet to a town home in a community right next door, but i cannt get my old isp here here and from what i am told it is because of comcast and at&t, my question is how can they do this? and is there anything that can be done government wise or something that can make stuff like this stop? i know the government shouldnt get involved but it seems like this is one thing that needs help, i just wanting thoughts on this cause my speed before was 1gig down and 400up which was great with no lag and now it is not even close to 1gig down and less than 25up.

Welcome to legacy of the government selling its soul ( actually our souls)  to the telephone utilities. Rules were put in place in exchange for the companies building service out into less populated (read less profitable) areas way back when. So the government is involved...just on the side of the utilities. Everytime repealing these laws comes up, millions of dollars get poured into lobbying to keep them.

Of course on the other hand, it could be worse for you. My parent's live in a dead zone that no utility provides internet to. And they are less than 30 minutes out of Knoxville.

That’s why Comcast can charge what they do; not much competition in most areas do to local governments.

Are you paying for Gig internet? Call them and they will probably get you the speed you are paying for. If they can’t they will reduce your bill.

I pay for 250 Mbps, I get around 295. That’s freakin fast. But then I was okay with 120 when I was getting that.

In most municipalities younhave the telephone company and a single cable company that have been granted right of way access to lay lines to the residences. Even if someone wanted to go through the expense to lay lines, most often they can’t. Look at what the state did to prevent other cities from having their utilities do what EPB did in Chattanooga.

The place I will be moving to is kinda a black hole to a point but was worse 2 years ago and 1 tree later. There was no internet service there until AT&T put up that 1 more tower where ever they put it because now there is AT&T cell phone service, AT&T Broadband Internet service and Direct TV but that did require cutting down one big tree but it was already half dead anyway from Lightening.

thanks for the replies, i am just mad that in the middle of Providence and right next door where i live i can get my old provider but not at my new place, i will probably be calling them soon once i get fully moved to send someone out to check the wiring and everything cause i am not getting any where close to the speeds i am supposed to get, i did a couple of speed tests and i am supposed to get 1gig down and about 50 up, i was getting about 3mbps down and 9up

You might want to just call them instead of waiting for someone to come out. If you are supposed to be at 1024 and you are at 3; you probably have equipment or account issues. They can check and reset all that remotely now.

Is that 3 on wired Ethernet?

thats on both wired and wireless and i have my own modem i do not rent one from them

I have Comcast and I added the in-house wiring coverage for like 6 bucks a month before I had them come and work. They rewired from my cable box to the pole instead of shrugging me off as customer  wiring issues. Then they could not ignore the equipment at the end of the street that needed replaced. Otherwise the tech will blame your wiring, your router, the cable box , or anything else to get out fast. You can cancel that feature at any time.

What was the ISP that you were using, and what ones are available in your new area?

The answer is probably going to be "yes, they can do this", but it's good to get all the information out.

The government could get out of the way, but too much money to allow that.  Even a less than stellar option provided by the electric company would have the effect of keeping Comcast and AT&T competitive in the area.

well i replaced my modem and it was fine for all of 10 minutes, speed tests showed i was getting the correct speeds but then went back to being crappy, i never had this issue with tds but what can i do

 

edit going to contact corporate for the place i live to complain about how i can only get comcast, i check just now to see what i could get from att and att is not available

Call and conplain. If need be get them to set you up one of their modems as a test. Cheap to rent a couple months to prove to them. With Comcast, you have to prove THEY are the issue before you get real help. It sucks.
