Rifles... 22 caliber Whatcha got?

Recommended Posts

Like many of us, I have several 22s. Rifles and pistols. Though pistols are my favorite, I do have 2 rifles that I'll never let go of.

A Winchester 75 that was my Dad's. I must have been 7 or 8 when he got it. Paid a tremendous amount of money for it...125 dollars and that included the Unertl scope on it. lol I remember it well. We were living with my grandparents at the time, and they gave him a great deal of hell over spending that kind of money on a gun. That should have been about 1962 or thereabouts.

The other is a Ruger 10/22 I got from one of our good guys here...DolomiteSuprafly.

It's been heavily customized. All towards great shooting and accuracy. Green Mountain Heavy target barrel, and a Volquartsen trigger group that is unbelievable. More that I don't remember offhand. Dolo cautioned me not to attempt to remove the trigger, as he had polished, fitted, and shimmed every part that needed it.

I can tell you that it is a superb 10/22. And has a threaded barrel, so my cheap can is a ball on it.

I have my Dad's old 1932/33 Remington model 33 now. It's as old as him and was his Father's.

Bore is pristine, action is smooth.

Barrel and receiver has average pitting for an antique and bluing is nearly gone.

Just a kid's single shot depression era rifle with little value but pretty cool.

I'm pretty sure it took down it's share of squirrels and small critters back then.

10/22, an original Stevens favorite, Marlin forgot the model number and an old Savage. Also forgot what model. The 10/22 is what I always wanted though. The others were hard for me to shoot lefty since they set offset in the stock.

A Ruger 10/22 I have had for 30 years and shot thousands of rounds with no issues. I would never get rid of it, however about 6 months ago I bought a Ruger American Compact .22 wmr and have been very surprised what an accurate bolt action it has been for an inexpensive rifle.

Treasure that 75 - love reading that and looking for something similar also!

I also have an heirloom .22.  My dad got a Winchester Model 67 when he was a kid.  I got it when I was a kid.  Its not a great gun, although it was more accurate than i was last time i shot it.  I busted the stock a long time ago and go a new one on it now, but I still have the original.  It'll go to one of my kids or a grandkid.

I've got pretty standard .22 stuff...

Henry H001 standard lever action

Henry AR-7

Ruger 10/22 Take-down

All pretty much stock w/ no mods... but with the 25-rnd mags the 10/22 is a ton of fun.

I got the Henry lever action as a companion to my Ruger Single Six "baby hogleg".

I have a bunch of .22s, with another one on the way. Some are the guns I learned to shoot on that I still own, some are ones that just caught my eye.

The one that I didn't intend to buy, I bought because the one I wanted to buy at a gun auction went higher than my limit. I don't even remember what I went to buy, but I bought a Winchester 290 semi, probably manufactured 1965-66 from the serial number, nothing special, I think I paid $125 for it and when I cleaned all the dust, dried grease and dead spiders out, it show almost no wear and I think it spent most of its life in the corner of a closet. Now why did it catch my eye, a semi automatic that shoots shorts, longs and long rifles. I was still in NY at the time and they had just pushed through their latest gun restriction which included a 7 round limit for semi autos, accept tube feed. It was later thrown out by the courts and it went back to 10 but I just had to have a semi that held 3 times the limit. It does shoot shorts very reliably but at the cost of shorts who would in a plinker. It doesn't get out of the safe to often, probably time to get it out again.

I looked at one of these new in the box and a gun shop maybe 3 years ago and was tempted but just couldn't bring myself to own one. Price was probably ok, if I remember right it was marked $200, but I knew the reputation and I like to shoot my guns.
