VORTEX CROSSFIRE II ON SOCOM 16- SHOOTS HIGH

Recommended Posts

I MOUNTED A VORTEX CROSSFIRE II 2-7X POWER SCOUT SCOPE ON MY SOCOM 16. DID NOT HAVE LASER BORE SCOPE TO SIGHT IT IN. USED BURRIS Z 1" ZEE RINGS, LOW, WEAVER-STYLE TO MOUNT ON SCOUT RAIL.

HORNADY CUSTOM LIGHT MAGNUM 150 G RATED AT 2960FPS SHOOT 3" HIGH AT 50 YDS AND 4" HIGH AT 100 YDS WITH SCOPE ELEVATION KNOB BOTTOMED OUT.

I HAVE THE ELEVATION BOTTOMED OUT AND AM SHOOTING 168 G RELOADS AND HITTING 1" HIGH AT 50 YDS AND 2" HIGH AT100 YDS.

168 G RELOADS BULLETS WERE AT 2500 FPS IN 18" BARREL ( SW M10).

WHAT CAN I DO TO ADJUST SCOPE TO GET ELEVATION TO MID RANGE OF DIAL INSTEAD OF BOTTOMED OUT.  HELP!!!!

beer can shim to bottom of front ring if the next one does it.   we used to shim the back ring to get elevation. solid rings not those ZEE rings with the inserts. Maybe swapping the inserts front to rear would also help? ( variance in insert thickness to center line )

I hear Vortex has good customer service though.

If you are still using the original flash hider and intend to keep it, remove the sight base from the barrel and have a machine shop remove about .045" off the front end and taper the cut to zero at the back end. Putting shims up there where it gets hot might loosen up over time. If the .045 get you back into adjustment range, lock the base down with blue loc tight. Its an expensive rifle, correct it the right way providing the scope tests out good on a known good rifle. As odd as it sounds, changing out the flash suppressor on a M1A can completely change the elevation POI.

Went to Burris Signature Zee rings with off -set inserts. Put +20 MOA insert in top of front ring and -10 MOA insert in rear bottom ring. This gives me 30 MOA of raising front of scope or downward elevation adjustment. Sighted in at 100yds and was able to lower shots to center. 147 g Magtech  rated at 2740 fps grouped centered, 168 g BTHP reloads at 2470 fps were 7" low but MOA ABOUT 1.5" group.

Ordered a +/- 20 MOA insert to replace rear 10 MOA to get scope zero at 100 yds closer to mid overall scope adjustment for elevation. This will give me a total of 40 MOA cant of scope upward from barrel.
