BLACK POWDER HOME STORAGE LAW

Hey y'all,

So I live in Clarksville, Tennessee.

I want to get a typical Pietta Navy Black Powder revolver.

I have no licenses, I'm not in the military or anything like that. I'm not a felon.

I have absolutely no intent to carry outdoors or in a car.

But I would like to know for sure: is it ok to have a BPR and all the materials required to shoot (BP, caps, balls) shipped to my home and permanently stored here?

You are right about large amounts, most shooters only keep a few pounds on hand. Have a friend that has a 25 lb. keg he bought many years ago. BP storage in your home should be in wood or plastic, not

Did you ask at the gun counter? Because BP is an explosive & not a propellant (batfe regs....) it has to be kept locked away with no public access. You have got to ask for it.

Yes. The only problem with bp storage is when you get into large amounts. Not may gun stores carry black powder. Dixie Gun Works at Union City sells bp, caps, bp guns lead balls, all the items you are asking about. You can order bp on line but the hazmat shipping adds up unless you buy several pounds. Take a trip over to Dixie Gun Works and look around, can also buy a bp cannon while you are there.

I am not knowledgeable, but isn't "large amounts" of black powder like 50 pounds? Unless you are shooting cannons, I can't see the average shooter having that much powder on hand.

You are right about large amounts, most shooters only keep a few pounds on hand. Have a friend that has a 25 lb. keg he bought many years ago. BP storage in your home should be in wood or plastic, not metal as metal would have grenade effect when exploding. Some of the imported bp comes in one pound metal cans.

Welcome to the forum.

Legally, a blackpowder revolver is not a firearm, and can be purchased without a background check; even mailed directly to your door. Some localities have ordinances regarding the storage of large amounts of black powder; more than the average enthusiast would likely have at home.

If you are interested in black powder reproductions, Dixie Gun Works is a must visit, and not too long a drive from Clarksville.

Be sure to learn about cleaning these arms before shooting, as rust is their greatest enemy. The caps and black powder are quite corrosive.
