Review TN AL GA Training Group, 12/1/18

Recommended Posts

9 students, rain, wind, mud, one flat tire, and 2 stuck vehicles later, another succesful training day in my log book.

The Students: made 3 new acquaintances I hope develop into  friendships and always enjoy seeing and engaging with people who have become friends through this venue.

Why is it easier to make friends within the gun culture? I think it is due to the  common interest and similar motivations for personal gun ownership we all share.

The Weather: Training in the rain is not a hardship, but it slows down the class. Targets and backers simply don't last, add some wind and my flying pop-up shelter, it reduces the user experience.

I will get a pair of inexpensive muckers. While my feet got damp and cold (socks) my Clark's were amazingly water resistant. Throw a pair of muckers with good socks in the trunk and I've got a good solution.

The weather did add the thick, multi layer clothing challenge to my draw which slowed me down.

Adding layers, 100% drawing from cover, a lack of dry practice over the last 2 weeks, using a new holster, and failing to roll the trigger during extension were all areas needing improvement, all on the  same day.

Since I crushed the Snow Man Drill, I am certainly not discouraged.

Good variety of timed and untimed drills as well as an  interactive man-on-man steel shoot off.

We had a pretty solid turnout of 9 people in spite of the ominous weather forecast. The early part of the day was..."challenging" ....from a standpoint of scoring targets .....and keeping them from blowing away. But part of training is learning and experiencing and having to adapt to adversity and while we'd all much rather shoot on a nice sunny fall or spring day we probably learn more about ourselves and our equipment when the weather is not optimal. As the day progressed the weather got better and the shooting too. We saw some pretty solid shooting from everyone.

Big thanks to everyone who came out and participated and hopefully you'll get good use out of your Christmas present.....even if you just use it as a bottle opener. MERRY CHRISTMAS !

Had a great time and met some great folk. Can’t wait to hook up with the group again.

At the range someone mentioned a draw video by Ron Avery. Does anybody have a link to it?

Thanks

Aq

Somewhat tough day for training, really tough day to stay warm and dry. Had a great time though - which has proven true every time I make it out. Continue to be impressed with the folks who show up and train - really  enjoy seeing and training with familiar faces and always enjoy meeting new ones.

I had a nice roller coaster day of shooting - some pretty ugly blunders but mixed in with some of my more solid shooting ability. Cold hands and extra cover garments can be challenging. I had a few runs of shooting with a pretty terrible grip from the get go. Saw some of my better runs came from just focusing on first establishing a good grip or when we started from the ready position.

Shot some really good drills and then Randy came up with a REALLY good one that I look forward to doing again and some variations of.

Ya, looking forward to making the event in January, looked at the website (firstpersonsafety.com) and didn't find anything on it yet.
