Cleaning a Shotgun

Recommended Posts

Other than wiping one down with some oil after handling, this is my position unless some real compelling arguments can be made to the contrary.

I've noticed that my 870 gets extremely hard to cycle, as in I have to beat the butt on the ground, when it gets filthy.  That's how I know when to clean it.  Honestly, I don't clean anything but black powder guns as long as they are working correctly.

After about 500 rounds.  In the Trap world this means every other day of competition. This thing needs to last me many more years.

On an over and under you need to clean off the grease on the hinge pins and other metal to metal contact points after each use and re-apply.  Otherwise, you can get galling and have trouble down the road.  Also, need to clean the action and other internals when hunting in very dusty conditions (such as Oklahoma dove hunting).  Also clean more after a firearm gets wet/used in the rain.  And obviously you don't waterfowl hunt.

I clean all my guns after every shooting session. I did however read on Al Gores World Wide Web that you never have to clean an AR; they will shoot forever without cleaning. How cool is that!?

I had an escort 12g in the UK. Cheapest gun I could find. Never cleaned it, had more shells through it than I can remember. Never had a jam or miss fire.

I hate cleaning AR's more than shotguns but it gets done, lol.
