Windows Defender?

Microsoft says it is. I use Norton because that is what Xfinity includes now. I’ve used both Norton and McAfee the last several years. They have both saved me a few times.

No virus software is 100%. Any of them could be hit by the latest ransomware; and the chances are pretty good you have lost everything on that machine. That’s why I use multiple backups with multiple external and internal hard drives. I use Acronis backup software. It’s a hard drive imaging software; I use that because I don’t want to have to reload all my applications if I must restore from a backup.

Safe computing techniques can also save your butt.

So, my opinion is, no, no single antivirus is sufficient protection. But if I was going to use a free one; Windows Defender would be my first choice.

No matter which one you use; you are as good as your last backup, that is not on the machine in question.

I have had more hard drive mechanical failures with a potential for loss of data than I have had losses due to virus.

Defender is good as it is built for Windows and does a good job.

Might be better out there but you'll have to pay.  As said do your part and back up off the machine and watch where you go and what you download and you will be safer.

I have used Defender since Windows 10 rolled out.
