Maybe the system could be geared more towards rehabilitation rather than incarceration.   It's clear that the current system isn't a deterrent.

I had a motorcycle stolen from my carport Erik.  I now keep a motorcycle in my carport.  I guess I deserve to have it stolen again.

I totally disagree with this whole rehab BS, I think incarceration should be a punishment rather than a reward.  Many of these criminals actually have a better life on the inside than the outside, what with libraries, gym equipment, TVs, 3 hots and a cot etc.  If they want to make a difference, they need to invest that money into programs like the boys and girls club of old.  Get into prevention rather than the rehabilitation.

Actual rehabilitation IS prevention.

Not really, as to get to rehab means they have already commited a crime.  With some of these prevention programs, the goal is to keep the kids from committing the crime in the first place.  Look at all the "kid" crime being reported in TN lately, many from teens below 18.  Giving them something else to spend their time on may help keep them off the streets.

The youth intervention programs you're talking about work with kids (who haven't been convicted of a crime) and seek to convince them to lead lives without committing (any more?) crimes. That's a very worthy goal.

The rehabilitation programs I'm taking about work with people of all ages to convince them to lead lives without committing crimes. I think that's also a worthy goal.

Both are very difficult and, in my opinion, equally beneficial to society.
