AEDC / AAFB

Looks like AAFB near Msnchester has 32,000 acres available to hunt.  Given it's on a base, other than finding the right places to go in, are there any specifics about which to be aware?

Is the deer hunting there good?  I'd be hunting from the ground.

Thanks!

Serious question by the way.  Hope that doesn't sound like a smart alec question.  I haven't hunted from a tree stand so maybe there are mechanics of it that I'm overlooking.

Climbing stands you carry as a backpack.  There are some nice light weight climbing stands that people use when hunting public land.  Find a spot that looks promising and climb up a tree.  The downside is that they have small seats and platforms.  Can't really stretch your legs like you can in a ladder stand.

Still hunting is a lot harder than it sounds.  I generally prefer to be up in  tree verse down on the ground.

Its a little late in the season to scout for that perfect spot to hunt there, I would maybe go ground blind or bush blind overlooking a clearing.

Hunting on WMA areas sucks the majority of people that come in have no respect for fellow hunters.

One thing going for Arnold is the trees, there pine trees and straight. One of my workers told me this funny story from AEDC, he got out there early one day, using a climbing stand he climbed about 20+ft up in a pine tree, everything settled down and he noticed a flashlight in the distance, it got closer and closer, dude bolted his stand onto his tree and started climbing.

If your in Franklin County you can hunt TVA land around Tims Ford Lake too.

I remember my first trip squirrel hunting at AEDC when I was 14 (that makes it about 1968).  Being from Chattanooga I was used to climbing up and down hills while hunting so I pretty well always knew where I was.  AEDC was the first totally FLAT land I ever hunted on and I got so lost.  Everything looked the same!  If my dad did not turn on the car lights and start blowing the horn I'd probably still be walking around in there . . .
