Boresnake for gun cleaning

Dont recall where I saw it but I remember watching a video where somewhere in the middle east a guy made an ak with the most basic of tools while squatted down over a rock. After manufacturing this is the desert sand he removed a boot lace, made an appropriately sized knot, dipped it in what appeared to be motor oil and ran the barrel once in each direction. Then fired off a full mag.

So now I just carry an old laced boot and a quart of Quaker State :)

Whenever the discussion of AK reliability and durability comes up the old motor oil bootlace story is thrown out. I’ve heard it from veterans and keyboard operators alike.

Not saying it’s not true as it makes complete sense.  But do “those people” really clean their weapons?
