AR15 for dummies?

One1

Recommended Posts

I’m a handgun guy, never owned a long gun. Now in my 40’s I’m getting gun-curious. I swapped my 4.5” M&P 45 ACP for an AR15  with a few  add-ons and a case today.

I’ve never even looked at one, just seen lots of videos of people enjoying them. Seemed like an ok deal so I went with it. Now, when i say new to the AR....... I mean I had to look at how to cock it and make it dry fire. Then I figured out how to separate the upper and lower. That’s about where I’m at. Lol.

i went and picked up some 223 to go shoot Sunday, it’s a 556 so no issues there. The AR is dry, so I’ll need to lube it up and look up where all I need to put oil.

If there’s anything I need to know to prevent issues I’m listening....

Here’s some clickable thumbs of what I picked up.

It appears you need an optic or a rear sight.

Did you that you can use IMGUR.com and we can view your pics without having to click on anything or be redirected to another site? ;)

You’re going to need a rear sight.  Please get one before you go to the range.  It will save you and everyone else around a lot of frustration.

Na, I have thousands of pictures established on a good host. No need to upload elsewhere and change it all over. I have 2 sights I've looked at by recommendation but no idea which is better.

You’re still gonna want a proper mechanical rear sight if you go with a red dot in case the optic fails during operations.  Something like a Magpul MBUS or whatever variety of rear flip-up you like.  There are tons of choices.

I have a cheap mechanical one picked out as well. I’m only going to be using the sight for long distance anyway. I wasted money on Ameriglo (sorta, not really. They are awesome) sights because I quit using the sights and started shooting with both eyes by sight picture and don’t pay much attention to anything but the tip of the gun or front sight. I can’t say how I’ll do with the AR as I won’t have shot it until sunday. I’m trying not to use the sights though. I’m much faster, especially on moving and targeting with both eyes.

Anywhere metal rubs on metal, especially inside and outside the bolt and bolt carrier.  Just not too much or it might spit back at you and it'll be pungent as it burns in excess.  There are probably enough sources online with pictures to get you through.

That's fine, but I'm not going to bother to look if I have to get a new webpage opened for any pics you're posting.

You clicked to get here. Where you click from there is on you.

I'm pretty amazed at ammo costs for target. The 223 is cheaper than 45 ACP. I thought I would go broke quick with the AR, but actually the cheapest I can get ammo from Academy for the 45 is 38¢ and for the AR in 223 is 32¢ (36¢ for 556). It's cheaper to run the range with the AR than a 45 ACP pistol. That's nutty.

Nose to charging handle when you use the iron sights. I sight in for a 6 o’clock hold at 100 yds where point of impact is centered on the bullseye. That’s using the small aperture. Red dots are great but you see a starburst if you have astigmatism.
