Funny thing happed at Academy Sports

Recommended Posts

I went by Academy Sports to see what kind of 308's they may have, I did not expect much but sometimes you catch a sale, closeout, etc. Anyways here goes,

I ask the counter guy what 308's they have in stock...

He points to a Marlin 308MXLR....

I tell him that the Marlin is in 308 Marlin not 308 Winchester.....

He tells me it says 308 on the tag so as far as he is concerned it is a 308, it says 308 on the tag and he points this out to me...

Once again I try to explain that I am looking for something in 308 Winchester...

He tells me they do not stock Winchesters!!! Seriously, he did say this...

I try again, no, I am not looking for a Winchester brand rifle, I am looking for a rifle chambered in 308 Winchester caliber....

He looks at me like I have two heads....

I try again, I say 308 Win also known as 7.62x51 NATO....

AHHH, he says, your looking for ammo and points me to the ammo aisle....:D

This is getting too funny but I am sticking with it, I try again, I try to explain that I want a 308 rifle, that Marlins are not chambered in 308 Win and I am not looking for ammo, would you look through your racks and boxes for a rifle in 308?......:tough:

He tells me that what I see is what they have and they must not have a 308, about that time a kid comes from the other end of the counter, grabs a Remington 700 ADL in 308 and sets it up on the counter. Nice kid, took over so I couldn't drive Dumbo crazy anymore with his "Who's on first" routine. I was starting to enjoy it....

I then ran across DrAlarms post on someone selling him a 308 Marlin when he thought he was getting a 308 Winchester. I feel for you man. There are some untrained folks working these retail counters nowadays.

Just had to share :P

I need me a good .308 Bolt gun. I have an old Winchester 88 in .308 and I love shooting it, but I want a bolt gun. I also love my Lever guns and would love a .308 Marlin Express.

Now if that feller would have had a sign...........................

LOL, now that's funny. I still haven't gotten my ammo but I'm happy with my rifle. I got it NIB (guy bought it as a 308win I guess and sold it to a pawn shop) for 4 bills +T&T. How much was the one they had? Mine is the all stainless with the black & gray laminate stock.

I saw a blued/wood for over $500 at Academy.

I had a similar experience while trying to purchase 9mm ammunition. I asked for 9mm parabellum (aka 9mm Luger or 9 x 19). I specified to avoid confusion with .380 auto, aka 9mm short or 9mm kurz. My saying "parabellum" did more to confuse than help. I think that was at WalMart or some other non-gun specific retailer.
