Lightweight or standard profile barrel?

Recommended Posts

I’m getting started on building a new upper. I’m wanting this to be a general purpose rifle that will double as a 2-gun rifle. Not fully tricked out but somewhat light and accurate. Usually out to 400 yards at most on steel targets.

I’m wondering if most go with a standard profile or a smaller pencil profile to save weight. I’ll probably do a Midwest lightweight 15” handguard, adjustable gas block, mid-length gas system and a 1-6 power Strike Eagle. There will be times when I’m shooting 30-50 rounds a stage so I’m concerned with heat in the pencil barrels.

Any advice?

For that range, i would buy the best barrel i could afford and a good free float handguard... Truth be known, a the trigger may mean more than a " great " barrel at that range.   We used to shoot the turnbolt guns quite a bit... Rem 222 and 223... The cartridge is plenty accurate... The trigger n barrel means somethin at that range...

I would post the same question in the Multigun section on enos.  I used to 3-gun with a 16" M4 profile barrel out to 300 yards and never noticed a heat issue, but I would be nervous about building a pencil-barrel gamer gun without first talking to some experienced 3-gunners who have done it.

I talked to a friend last night who has a pencil barrel. He said it’s not sub moa by any means but it has been working decent enough for 2-gun matches.  He also said it opens up some after a few shots but is still accurate enough for larger steel targets.  I’ll just have to compare the saved weight vs using a standard profile and an ultra light Handguard.  I may also do a shorter barrel with a pinned / welded brake to make 16”.
