Good for you!

I gave up on it years ago when you had to do code to progress. I guess they have done away with that??

Yes. No longer need Morse code. Funny I still remember about half my Morse code.

Congratulations!!! Welcome to the club! KE4PJR here. Working on my extra now, but not too smart so I'm struggling.

I've got the ARRL books for General and Extra but I think I like this guy's no-nonsense books better. https://www.kb6nu.com/. Also HamStudy.org great for practice tests.

Been wanting to do this for a couple of years. Finally got it done. Plan on getting General and Extra knocked out over the next couple of weeks.

ALWAYS wanted to do this...dven started studying code back in the day...no real excuse now not to do it, except for time.  Ive become used to other non-productive (TV & Internet) ways to spend my spare time, lol.

Would you guys be willing to write a bit about HAM radio operation? History, current state, what you actually do, why, etc?

I'm aware of HAM radio operation, but know essentially nothing about it.

That's asking for someone to write a lot about something that has mountains of information already available.   The most pertinent question for these folks is probably what motivated them to get their license and become a HAM.

A site that has a lot of the other stuff, in very down to earth modern style is here:

It used to be a bunch of old men that don’t have anything to do, sitting around BSing all day. Today they call them gun forums.

Are we going to start needing TGO Operator licenses? Will there be a test?!

Congratulations!  I've had a license for over 40 years, an extra class licensee over 20 years.  Yup, had to do code for all of the classes, except Tech and Advanced.  73 and good luck with your coming exams.

I've been thinking about this for years.

http://hamradioprep.com   is offering a "Corona Special."   The tech and general courses are normally $25 each.  They are now $10 each.  Better yet, you can do the "bundle" and get both for $15.   Looks like some very good material.

I did the bundle.   Seem to have some time on my hands these days......

Thanks OP and all you guys for the inspiration!

Hamradioprep is a good place to start. I also used HAM College YouTube channel for General and Amateur Extra. Actually teach the info not just to pass but to know and understand. Website to links is www.w4eey.com. I then used HamRadio app to take practice tests. Good combo for me using these three.
